Notes:
In case anyone's wondering, in this story, Ana is 17, which means everything is happening now. Bella's been a vampire for two years, and Nessie is, I guess, about the physical representation of a ten or twelve-year-old. Also, I'm planning to do a playlist for this fic. Check the chapter notes to see what music works for each chapter If anyone has any questions, please leave a review.

Chapter 11: Reality

It was a wonderful dream. Seth and I were at a small ocean cave we had discovered in the side of the cliff on First Beach during my early weeks in Forks; it was perfectly situated on the beach, close enough to the ocean when the tide came in, but far enough away that we could still access it during high tide. There was a large rock that hid the entrance of the cave from passersby, and it was her that I sat, watching the sunset, when I heard the voices.

“We can’t hold out forever,” one said. “They won’t leave until we give them their word, or she agrees to go to them.”

I blinked. Was I imagining these voices? I tried to block them out, but they seemed important; at the very least, they wouldn’t just fade like most thoughts. I tried to focus on the colors the sun made on the water as it disappeared over the horizon, but it almost seemed as if it was fading.

“Seth said she doesn’t want to become one of us. Alice can’t see her as one of us, either. Can’t Aro accept that, and move on?” The other voice seemed desperate for something that it guessed wouldn’t happen. I pitied the speaker as I tried to grasp the remainder of what I realized was a dream, despite the fact that I was losing it faster than a sidewalk chalk drawing in the rain.

I opened my eyes to see everyone talking in hushed whispers, but despite that, I could still hear snatches of conversation.

“We won’t….”

“I don’t have any other ideas….”

“What do we tell them?”

I realized now what I’d have to do. In order to save those I loved, I’d have to feed myself to the lions. The Volturi wouldn’t leave. I needed to go to them, and explain that I was Seth’s Imprint; I couldn’t become a vampire.

I stood up, stretching; I saw Jake raise his wolfy head, Nessie sitting on his shoulders. She waved, and I raised my hand to acknowledge them.

But then, as I walked toward the front of the group, a series of events happened.

Alice gasped, shocked and turned toward me.

Edward closed his eyes, shaking his head. I could guess what he’d seen through Alice’s vision

“I’m sorry, everyone,” I whispered, “but it’s the only way.”

“No, Ana,” Edward whispered, “There’s got to be another way; you said so yourself.” He paused for a moment. “Seth’s words, not mine,” he added.

I turned to the sandy colored wolf. “I don’t have a choice,” I told him. He nuzzled my neck, whimpering. I stroked his muzzle, holding back the urge to wrap my arms around his furry neck. “I’m sorry,” I repeated. “I know I said that, but I see now that there is no other way. I won’t do that to you guys; you all belong together, you complete each other, and to take someone away is to ruin a perfectly good family.” My voice broke as I said family.

“You’re just as much a member of this family as anyone else is,” Emmett growled, “Volturi, or no Volturi.”

“I arrived here because of a car accident that should’ve taken my life,” I said, “Fate’s only here to finish the job,”

“Most of us became part of this family because of circumstances that should’ve take our lives,” Bella whispered, “Sickness, beatings, mauling….” She glanced at her left hand, entwined with Edward’s equally pale hand. “The occasional happily-ever-after wedding.” She added softly; I had to strain in order to hear her.

“Well,” I said, “If the don’t… kill me,” I swallowed the taste of bile I felt in my throat. How easily I could speak of my possible demise! “Maybe I can convince them that Seth and I are imprinted.”

Carlisle glanced over at the hooded figures “I think we can hope for that much,” he said.

I nodded before I took my first steps into the field.

“Wait, Ana!” Edward’s voice halted me for a moment. “If you get in trouble,” he whispered, “Just let me know.” He winked before moving back into place.

I began trudging toward my fate, but about halfway to the cloaked Volturi, I paused, and looked back at my family.

The all watched me, their topaz eyes keeping track of my progress. I saved Seth’s face for last. He watched me go with his emotions on his face.

Before I walked away, I sent him one quick thought. Edward, I thought, Tell Seth I love him, and I hope I’ll see him again soon.
