Dead and Gone

Summary:
Edward dies trying to protect Bella. Even though Bella would rather die, the Cullens change her when Alice finds out the Volturi are on their way. The story takes place after her change (with a little flashback in the beginning explaining everything). I'm sure there are other stories to do with Edward dying out there, so I did not attempt to copy them if my story sounds like them. Oh, and the title was inspired by the song "Dead and Gone" by T.I. featuring Justin Timberlake (it has nothing to do with this story, it just seemed to fit). Notes:
I was going to wait to post this until after I had a few chapters, like I do with my other stories, but I liked this first chapter a lot, and I wanted to know what you all thought.

3. Chapter 3

There sat Mike Newton.

Mike Newton. And he was a vampire. Another vampire sat at the table with him, her back was to us and all we could see was her curly brown hair.

We all gasped.

“Oh my gosh why is Mike Newton here?” Rosalie asked from next to me.

Of course Mike heard her and his head flashed up. His eyes widened when he saw us and he murmured something to the girl sitting across the table from him, who turned and we saw her face.

Jessica Stanley was a vampire and was sitting across the table from Mike Newton.

Mike stood up and Jessica followed and they walked towards us. Alice turned and exited the cafeteria and we trailed after her.

“Well if it isn’t the Cullens?” I heard Mike ask from behind us.

I turned around but was met by Emmett’s back, blocking me from view.

“Hello Mike and Jessica.” Alice said, I could hear the cold undertone of her voice.

“We didn’t think we’d see you here.” Jessica said quietly, “at least not after Bella disappeared.”

“I didn’t disappear.” I stepped out from behind Emmett and smiled at her. She glared at me while Mike stood with his mouth hanging open.

“Why don’t we go back to our house,” Alice suggested, “we can talk there away from all the, um, humans.” She smiled and then before Jessica could even say her answer Alice nodded and headed towards the car. We piled in and Alice drove to the house with Mike and Jessica following us.

When we arrived at the house Esme and Carlisle, who had the day off, were standing on the front porch, worried expressions on their faces, they were scared that something had gone wrong at school.

“Is something wrong?” Esme asked as we got out of the car.

“No, we have some visitors though.” Rosalie nodded towards Mike’s car, where he was helping Jessica out.

“Oh my goodness,” Esme mumbled under her breath.

“Hello, nice to see you two again.” Carlisle stepped forward and shook both of their hands. “Please come inside.” He turned and gestured towards the door. Mike and Jessica walked in, and we all shared a brief look before following them.

“So, um, if you don’t mind me asking, how are you two vampires?” Carlisle asked a little confused.

“Well after our first year of college we came back home for the summer. We hadn’t seen each other in awhile so we decided to have a picnic to get to know each other.” Mike shivered a little before continuing. “We were just sitting out in the woods when all of a sudden these things came out of the trees and growled at us. And before we could do anything they attacked us and bit into our necks, next thing we knew they were ripped off of us by these giant wolves. I blacked out after that, but according to Jessica they carried us farther into the forest and left us there, when we woke up there was someone sitting with us.”

“He said his name was Sam,” Jessica interrupted, “and he told us what we were, and that he was going to keep us to the same agreement that he had with the ‘others’, although I guess that was you guys. So we left, and traveled a little after we gained control of ourselves, and we just decided to move back here.”

A silence fell over the room, and I tried to think of something to say. Unfortunately Emmett had also thought of something, and it wasn’t something I wanted to think about.

“Do you by any chance remember what the vampires who attacked you looked like?”

“Um…” Mike trailed off deep in thought. “Oh yea, one was kind of young looking and he had blond hair, the other was a female, and she had this bright red hair.” I squeezed my eyes shut, and Alice was immediately at my side rubbing my back.

“Did you ever find out their names?” I wished Emmett would stop asking questions; sometimes being curious wasn’t a good thing.

“Well, the female bit me, and she had a necklace on with a letter charm on it.” Jessica was silent for a minute, “I’m pretty sure it was a V.” I squeezed my eyes tighter and hoped Emmett wouldn’t say anything.

“No, that sucks,” he growled.

“Why?” Mike asked confused.

“I wanted to be the one to kill the person that murdered Edward-“ Emmett broke off as Rosalie smacked him on the back of the head and he realized what he had just said.

I rose from the couch and ran up the stairs to my room- his old room- before anyone could say anything to me. Unfortunately I could still hear what was going on downstairs.

“What was that all about?” Jessica asked.

“Yea, and what do you mean by ‘murdered Edward’?” Mike chimed in with his own questions.

“Well, um, you see Edward was… killed, by a woman named Victoria, the same woman that bit you Jessica.” Esme said softly.

“Why would she kill him?” Jessica said loudly. There was a pause while my family tried to decide who should tell the story, finally Carlisle spoke up.

“Well, during that first spring break when Bella moved here, she came to watch our baseball game, however while we were playing three nomads showed up, James, Victoria, and Laurent. James was a tracker and decided to go after Bella. Alice and Jasper took her to Phoenix to hide her while the rest of us tried to lead James and Victoria away from her. Somehow James figured out he was being tricked and found her in Phoenix, and Bella found a way to slip away from Alice and Jasper to meet him because she thought he had her mother. We found them right after James bit Bella and we pulled him off and killed him.”

“Wait shouldn’t Bella have been a vampire then?” Mike asked.

“Yes, but Edward sucked the venom back out.” I sobbed a little when Edward’s name was mentioned, and the talking ceased for a moment before Alice was at my side again rubbing my back and Jasper was sitting next to me a hand on my shoulder to calm me down. As soon as they were there Carlisle continued, “At Bella’s eighteenth birthday she by accidentally gave herself a paper cut, and Jasper lost control and tried to attack her.” I heard two gasps from downstairs.

“I’m still mad at myself for that.” Jasper said loud enough for them to hear.

“And I told you it wasn’t your fault.” I responded.

“Anyways, Edward decided that it was too dangerous for Bella to be around us and told us that we were leaving. He wanted her to have a human life, and not be put in danger every second she was around us. Of course we didn’t know that Victoria and James were mates. Victoria wanted revenge and enlisted the help of Laurent to get it. They came to Forks to kill Bella, thinking that a mate for a mate was only fair, but the wolves got Laurent and kept Victoria away.”

“But they ended up getting Victoria I guess,” Emmett sounded upset.

“Bella started hanging out with Jacob Black, but he was a werewolf so he had to go on patrol looking for Victoria so that left Bella alone in La Push. She decided to go cliff diving for recreational purposes, but Alice saw her jumping and thought she was trying to kill herself, so she left Denali, where we were staying for the time, to come to Forks, telling Rosalie that Bella was dead. Rosalie told Edward, who was in South America at the time, that Bella was dead, so he went to Italy to the Volturi to ask them to kill him because he didn’t want to live without Bella.” Carlisle took a deep breath and let what he had just said sink in, “Bella really wasn’t dead though, so she and Alice went to Italy to stop Edward from killing himself. But while they were there they had to promise the Volturi that Bella would be changed otherwise they would have to kill her because she knew too much. When they got home Bella and Edward made up and then Edward said that he would be the one to change her if and only if they got married.”

I sobbed harder and Carlisle waited until he knew I was calm to continue.

“Unfortunately Victoria built an army of newborn vampires to kill Bella, and while we were fighting them, um, one got on Edward’s back and Victoria got a hold of Bella and um, forced her to watch as the new born dismembered and burned Edward.”

I dry sobbed even more as I curled up in a ball, wrapping my arms around my legs and rocking back and forth.

“Oh my gosh that’s terrible. But what happened afterwards.” Jessica sounded a lot nicer now that she knew what actually happened.

“Well Alice had a vision of the Volturi coming to check in on Bella, so we changed her and left Forks. We just moved back last year.”

“When you say vision what do you mean?” Mike asked.

“Well certain people in my family have gifts, Alice can see the future, Jasper can sense emotions, Bella can create mental and physical shields, and um, He could read minds.” Carlisle left my power out, although I wasn’t sure why.

“Uh-oh, no wonder he didn’t like me so much, he could read my thoughts.” Everyone laughed a little at his statement.

The chatter continued for awhile but I stayed up in my room. Alice and Jasper eventually went back downstairs to join them. That was a bad idea, as soon as Jasper left the room I immediately felt guilty.

He was gone because of me. If he hadn’t been protecting me then he would still be here. If He had just let Victoria have me then he’d still be alive.

I looked down at my left hand. There on my ring finger sat Elizabeth Masen’s ring. It sparkled in the light beautifully, just like He sparkled.

That thought did it. I shot off my bed and down the stair.

“Bella, what’s wrong?” Alice asked.

“It’s all my fault!” I sobbed, and then I was out the door, Alice would explain to them where I was going, and on my way to the meadow.
