I remember driving home from Port Angeles in Edward’s Volvo. My truck was in the shop, and Edward, the good man that he is, realized that I needed my privacy when shopping. I knew that it was a huge concession on his part, he loved that car.
I remember thinking of how I would soon be in his arms when I saw the lights. They confused me at first…car lights, on this side of the high way? And then I realized, they were coming straight for me. I could see the car swerve from the other lane into mine. It didn’t slow down, it didn’t stray from it’s course.
I remember speeding up and trying to turn the car in time. But there was nothing that I could do. No matter what I did, the other car would hit me. I heard the impact on the cars rear right side. I felt the back end of the Volvo slide, causing the car to fishtail towards the edge of the highway.
I remember the feeling of relief when the tires made it to the division between the asphalt of the highway and the grass before the forest. And then came the terror. The terror of understanding that the car wasn’t stopping. The terror of knowing that my life was coming to a rushing end. I did everything that I could do in order to get away from the trees.
I remember the sound of the car’s frame as it twisted around the truck of the tree that I had hit. I could feel the metal move as it protested against the unyielding trunk. I couldn’t yet feel the pain, although I could detect the heady scent of my blood rushing from who knows where on my body. As I thought about what had happened, I was suddenly aware that no one had been on the road, save the other driver. And what good would that do me? Surely, he would be injured as well. Was he okay? Had he survived? What would happen to me now? How would anyone find me? Would Alice had seen this?
Somewhere in the middle of my thought process, the adrenaline that had been in my system faded. Such pain! Never had I imagined that a car accident would solicit such agony. It felt as though I had broken bones all throughout my body. I swiveled my head as far as I could without causing too much pain and saw that I had shards of glass in my leg. That would explain the blood. I couldn’t move my arms.
I remember thinking that if I had had my truck I wouldn’t have been made into a pretzel around this tree. This thought caused me to recall a conversation I had with Edward concerning his driving when I first met him
“Charlie’s a cop remember? I was raised to abide by traffic laws. Besides, if you turn us into a Volvo pretzel around a tree trunk, you can probably just walk away.”
“Probably,” he agreed with a short, hard laugh. “But you can’t.”
How I had come to hate those days in which I hunted with my brothers and sisters, away from my precious Bella. I figured that today she would be okay, she was only going to Port Angles to go shopping. A rare event, and one I had to talk Alice out or crashing. Bella only liked trudging through shopping when it was by herself. I had allowed her to take my Volvo, since her truck was not currently working. Hopefully it would not be resurrected again, so I would buy her a better, more reliable four door. Until then, I supposed it was necessary to allow her to borrow his car. She would be safe enough without him, in his car, for one day.
Or at least that was what I told myself before I saw what Alice was seeing. My car, twisted and mangled around a wide tree trunk, while an obviously drink driver was merely propelled toward the other side of the highway-where it should have been in the first place. I didn’t think before I was running wildly toward Emmet’s jeep. I could hear Alice up ahead of me, yelling to the others about what she had seen. They made it to the jeep faster, but I was surprised when I saw that Emmet had left the drivers seat open for me. From what he thought, he was under the impression that he figured I would drive faster than anyone else, under the circumstances.
As I pulled onto the obscure mountain trail I heard Alice explaining to a very confused emergency operator what she had seen. Hopefully, the ambulance would get there sooner than we would. From what Alice had let me glimpse, Bella wouldn’t be in good condition. She kept trying to look ahead, to see if Bella would be okay. But all she was getting was haze.
She’s going to be fine, she’s going to live. She’ll be okay, just drive, Edward, we have to get there NOW!
Alice wasn’t doing a very good job of being convincing. I could tell that the others agreed with me by the looks on their faces.
I tore out onto the highway, speeding off in the direction of Port Angeles. Thank God we had decided to stay close to home today. Thank God Alice had sensed we would need to be close. I shuddered, fearing that we would be too late. That Bella would be dead by the time we got there. I pushed the accelerator down harder and sent up a silent prayer that Bella would keep fighting for a hold on life.
It had been an extremely slow day. Part of me was glad that no one had been in any medical emergencies, but a selfish side of me was wishing that something would happen to someone, just so I would have something to do. Maybe just an appendectomy. Or even just a few stitches. Anything to keep my mind and hands occupied for a few short moments.
Finally my pager went off. Apparently, there was a trauma major in the ER that needed immediate attention. I rushed down into the ER, where an attending began giving me stats before I moved past the curtain separating the patient from the rest of the room.
“Miss Jane Doe, apparently a victim of an accident, found in a silver Volvo right off the highway that was wrapped around a tree. Critical condition.”
Hearing this was a shock. A silver Volvo? There weren’t many of them around here. I yanked the divider away from its position and gasped aloud at the scene that presented itself to me.
Dear God and Heaven Above.
It was Bella.
