Even though all the Cullens drive super fast, it still took us an hour to get to Thrill World. My stomach started performing gymnastics as we passed the billboards proclaiming things like “Thrill World: Home of The Dragon” or “Come and test your sanity on The Cyclops, only at Thrill World”. All of these showed people screaming on huge roller coasters.
Emmett, who was driving, looked in the rearview mirror and grinned. “Feeling sick already, Bella?”
Edward wrapped an arm around my shoulders and squeezed them gently. “Don’t be nervous; we’ll all have a good time.”
Rosalie, who was in shotgun, didn’t say anything, just sniffed and stared out the window. At least the weatherman had proclaimed a cloud
cover for the whole weekend. Guiltily, I almost wished the sun had come out. Then I wouldn’t have had to face the horrors of Thrill World.
I could see the coasters before we even entered the parking lot. All of them were huge, tall monsters with terrifying drops and loops. Involuntarily, I cringed into Edward’s chest. His hand stroked my hair.
Emmett swerved the Jeep into the spot right next to the Mercedes, a feat that a normal human wouldn’t have been able to do. I climbed out after Edward, and Carlisle and Esme had gathered everyone around them for a quick word.
“Alright everybody, we’ll meet up in the front entrance at ten p.m.” Carlisle said, looking at everyone in turn. Then he smiled. “You kids have fun.”
Alice flitted to my side as we all filed to the entrance. “Don’t worry Bella,” she chirped. “I saw several things in the car ride here – you’re going to have fun.”
“Right,” I mumbled, looking down at my feet.
Edward took my hand. “Jasper is actually the biggest scaredy-cat here. You should have seen him last time we came here,” he whispered. Too bad I couldn’t believe that.
The lady working the entrance checked us all through, giving Edward a flirtatious smile as she scanned his bracelet. Even though I would never become immune to his perfection, I had at least gotten used to it. It always surprised and annoyed me a little when someone else noticed.
Jasper, feeling my jealousy and irritation, turned around and grinned at me. In return, I stuck my tongue out at him.
“So, what to do first?” Emmett rubbed his hands together and surveyed the map he had grabbed as we came in. “How about The Demon?” He turned to grin wickedly at me. “Sound good Bella?”
“Emmett, please.” I could hear the scorn in Edward’s voice. “That is one of the biggest coasters here. It’ll give her a heart attack.”
“Why don’t we start with The Rattler?” Jasper suggested. “That one’ll be easy enough for her to start out on.”
Emmett groaned, and Alice spoke up. “You and Rose go do the rides you want to first, and Jasper and I will stick with Edward and Bella.”
Emmett agreed, and they headed up toward a huge black and red coaster to the left. Edward, my hand still in his, dragged me straight ahead.
I kept my eyes on the ground as we went farther. I was afraid I would pass out if I saw any ninety feet high machines. The screams from the other park-goers were bad enough.
Finally Edward stopped, and I allowed myself to look up. We were in a reasonably sized line for a wooden coaster. The biggest drop looked like it was about thirty-five feet. The whole thing had been painted orange and purple, and I was comforted that there weren’t as many screams on this ride as I heard on others.
“Edward?” I clutched myself closer to him.
“Is this ride, umm, fast?”
He chuckled. “Like Jasper said, this is one of the coasters people go on first. It’s not really fast, but it’s not really slow either. It’s like a roller coaster to get started on.”
“I’ll sit next to you.” He pressed his face into my hair and exhaled, letting the cool waves of his sweet-smelling breath wash over me. As he probably was aiming for, I forgot my uneasy stomach and relaxed.
“Bella, we’re next!” Alice gripped my arm excitedly and pointed at the carts that were coming in. Really, the only reason I got in was because of Edward’s firm grip on my hand.
But I could tell he was nervous about me when he had to buckle my seatbelt for me. “Sweetheart, we don’t have to go on any rides if you’d rather not.”
I felt a feeling of excitement (most likely from Jasper) and squeezed his hand. “No, we’re here to have fun, remember? And what’s the fun of an amusement park if you don’t go on the rides?” Despite my words, as we started moving, I leaned against his cool body.
Alice and Jasper occupied the cart in front of us, and Alice was clearly enjoying herself. “Wahoo!” she yelled as we started climbing the first drop. Jasper turned around in his seat and rolled his eyes at us. I couldn’t help but giggle.
I should’ve known it was coming, but I was feeling too nervous as we climbed to remember. One second before the drop, Jasper sent a HUGE wave of excitement over me, and I sat up, blood pulsing through me faster. Edward must’ve heard the quickening in my heart, because he grinned at me as we tipped over the edge.
Although nothing could compare to the feel of me on Edward’s back as he ran, this definitely came in second-best. The speed, the wind, and this time Edward was beside me. I had never been a screamer, but was smiling hugely as we started a quick climb up the next rise. Alice, on the other hand, was yelling in her bell-like voice, and had her skinny pale arms up in the air.
Needless to say, I enjoyed myself. As we slowed down, Edward kissed my forehead and laughed.
“And here I was thinking you were nervous,” he said, probably relieved I was still conscious.
“Told ya, Bella!” Alice cried as we unbuckled ourselves and climbed out of the carts. “I knew you would have fun!”
I rolled my eyes, but was still grinning. “So,” I said, looking around and finally resting my eyes on Edward, “What’s next?”
