At three in the morning I woke up again and discovered another benefit of having a vampire boyfriend; if you wake up at a ridiculous hour of the morning he’ll be awake and available for conversation.

“You should be asleep,” Edward said.

“Yes I should,” I said, “but I’ve been on a schedule for the last year or so, and I can’t make myself sleep more than eight and a half hours at night unless I’m on vacation, which is something I’m definitely not on.”

Edward scowled, “When this is over, you and I are going to go away for a while,” he gently slid a finger across the circles under my eyes, “You look more tired than I do, and I know you get more sleep than me.”

I smiled, “That sounds nice, but you know I’m never going to let you do that. You should have saved some of your gift giving opportunities.”

He laughed, “Technically I did. There’s still President’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and a whole host of other holidays that I haven’t given you anything for yet.”

I frowned at him, “No one gives gifts out for minor holidays, not even your family.”

“Alright, but what if I told you that the vacation was going to take place at on a yacht that I already own? And we would only go away for a month or two?”

I just stared at him, but he looked confused so I had to clarify, “Only a month or two?!?! I’ll tell you what, due to the nature of the proposed vacation I will consent to a long weekend.”

“Three weeks,” he countered.

“I’ll give you one.”

He looked into my eyes, and I was utterly unprepared for him to turn the full force of his gaze on me. I could feel myself deciding to do whatever he wanted as he leaned in towards me, “How about two?”

“Okay,” I heard myself say, although I didn’t make the decision to open my mouth. I did however make the decision to close the very small distance between our lips. I kissed him softly for a moment before my hormones took over and I turned into a teenager all over again, putting my fingers in his hair and forcing myself closer to him. After three seconds I felt myself bracing for him to pull away, but to my surprise he didn’t. Instead he buried his hands in my hair and kissed me just as passionately as I kissed him. I was surprised, but I wasn’t about to draw attention to the fact that he was seemingly leaving all of his old boundaries behind.

We continued like that for a while before Edward pulled away claiming that if he kept this up much longer my heart was going to have some difficulty. I told him that I didn’t mind that prospect in the slightest, but he just laughed and pulled my head down to rest on his chest while my breathing and heart calmed down.

I don’t know how long we stayed like that, just lying there. Occasionally he would stroke my hair or press his lips to my forehead. It was a strange sensation, to be sitting there and know that there were a billion and a half things that needed to get done, but in that moment I didn’t care. I was simply content to be in Edward’s arms and I never wanted to leave. It was like I was safe from the rest of the world, similar to when I was younger and I used to make forts out of old sheets and kitchen chairs. In my fort nothing could get me and my nightmares would go away. I was long past the days of childhood make-believe, but I would never stop wanting my security blanket and I was starting to rediscover it in Edward.

After a while I forced myself to get up despite Edward’s obvious desire to remain like that forever. I needed a human moment and I had to start getting ready for work. As I left the bed there was a knock on the door which I assumed was for my benefit.

“Come in Alice,” Edward said. And my pixyish best friend danced into the room.

She walked into the closet and came out with a stack of clothing that I assumed I was supposed to put on.

“Um, thank you?” I said.

She laughed, “You’re welcome. You did alright matching yesterday, but I saw that it wouldn’t go as well this morning. What do you want for breakfast? Esme and I will get started on it while you’re in the shower.”

“Alice you really don’t have to do that, I hardly ever eat breakfast.”

Edward gave me a look and said, “I’ll come down in a minute or two and take care of it.” I glared at him a moment, but decided if it would make him happy to make me a bagel or cereal I wouldn’t stop him.

Half an hour later I had showered and put on the outfit Alice had left for me and I headed down the stairs. I know I shouldn’t have been surprised, but the instant I got to the bottom of the stairs a delicious scent hit my nostrils and I could tell that Edward had made me more than cereal.

As I walked into the dining room I was hit with a breakfast buffet that would have made guests at five star hotels jealous and it wasn’t just because of the gorgeous chef. Edward had taken it upon himself to make pancakes, eggs, French toast, bacon, sausage, a fresh fruit platter, and several other dishes that I couldn’t name.

“What did you do?” I asked.

He held up his hands in defense, “It wasn’t me! I just made you eggs and bacon. Alice and Esme wanted to help, and then Emmet felt the need to experiment. He’s responsible for the blue goo on the end. I would stay away from it if I were you; I’m not entirely sure what he put in it.” I mentally groaned, but sat down and made sure I had a little taste of everything except for Emmett’s creation. Of course it was all perfect.

I finished my food thanked everyone involved profusely, and headed out of my safe haven into the real world and back to work.
