Saturday came quicker than I ever would have expected. I was up bright and early after a night of restless sleeping. Carlisle left at about midnight, and that left me with hours and hours to lie awake. He promised that he'd see me in a few hours, then hopped right out my window.

When my alarm clock flashed 7:10 in the morning, I was all too ready to ride with Carlisle to Seattle. I was a little nervous, though. It'd take us about two and a half hours to get there if Carlisle drove as fast as his family did. Alice had given me rides to school for the entire week, and I was surprised I was still alive. She drove like a maniac.

I was pacing my room when Carlisle entered my room through the window.

"Hi," I sighed. I was relieved to see him. I didn't know how much longer I could wait.

He grinned. "Hello."

“Nice to see you.” I breathed.

He chuckled, “Nice to see you too.”

Once again, an awkward air settled about us and I didn’t really like it. Typically, things were easy with Carlisle and I. I wondered what had changed.

“Is everything alright?” I asked, speaking what I was thinking. Carlisle looked away from me and toward the window, and I knew something was wrong. I took a few steps closer and put my hand on his arm.

He looked toward me at the physical contact and smiled, “Nothing, Bella. I was just a little distracted by some old memories, that’s all.”

I scowled at him. He had really worried me. “

Well, are you ready to go?” He asked. I bobbed my head eagerly but nervously.

Carlisle picked me up and put me on his back; Charlie had already left to go fishing with Harry Clearwater and Billy Black, so I didn’t have to worry about him. Besides, I had written him a note saying I was shopping.

“Ready, Bella?” Carlisle asked and I buried my face in his neck as a sign of approval.

I couldn’t even feel his jump from the window he was so fast and silent. I was thankful for that, otherwise I probably would have thrown up on him.

He took off from there; I could feel the wind blowing in my hair as a sign of that. Within seconds of his vampire running, we were at his beautiful home.

He set me gently on the ground, but never letting go of my skin. His hand was placed on the small of my back.

I noticed that when we arrived, none of the other Cullens were there, however, Alice was waiting at the front door, jumping up and down with a giant Gucci purse in her hand.

“Bella!” Alice squealed as she ran straight for me.

“Alice!” I said breathlessly back, her hug having knocked the air out of me.

“I am SO excited to go shopping with you and Carlisle! I mean this is going to be SO MUCH FUN!!” She clapped her hands together and slid into Edward’s car, while Carlisle and I were led to the Mercedes.

Carlisle drove just as smoothly as I remembered, his hands never leaving the 10-2 position. Aside from when he decided to stroke my face or my hand.

It was an easy ride, filled with a comfortable silence, very unlike our awkward silence in my room.

Suddenly, I heard a phone buzz and it was at Carlisle’s ear in a millisecond. He was mumbling words too soft for me to hear. But I could tell by his crumpled expression that something was wrong.

Carlisle swerved suddenly, breaking his graceful driving for one second.

He was heading towards the park.

He screeched to a stop in the parking lot, turned off the car and he put his head in his hands.

“Bella, I’m so sorry.” He choked out the sentence in agony.

“What happened?” I asked, suddenly extremely worried.

“It’s Esme. She’s gone to Italy.”
