15. Chapter 15: Arriving In Volterra

At about four o’clock in the morning, Alice was at my house, ready to go. She even had a suitcase packed for me.

“I figured that since we didn’t get to go shopping yesterday, I would just bring you some things to wear from my house,” she said as she thrust the pleather duffel into my face.

“I’ll go get my hygiene stuff,” I said in response, already scared of the contents in the bag.

On my way up, I stopped to kiss Charlie on the cheek, and tell him goodbye. I already dealt with him last night, when he got home late. He knew I was leaving.

The bathroom was my next stop, and soon I was back down the stairs.

I shoved my bag into the pleather one Alice gave me, seeing a deep v-neck blue blouse already. I shivered, thinking of how I would actually have to wear that.

“Let’s go or we’ll miss our flight!” Alice squealed from the inside of Edward’s car. I sighed and slid inside after locking the door to my house.

The car was already warmed and the engine was revved, so we slid out of the driveway with no problems.

We were silent the whole ride there, but a question was always nagging me. When I finally got the guts to ask it, we were at the airport, and boarding the plane.

“Alice, how does one become a vampire?” I asked as we were sitting down as quietly as I could.

Her immediate reaction was to stiffen, I had prepared myself for the shock on her face and unwillingness to answer the question, but instead I got her to relax and ease into a story.

“Vampires are the perfect predators. Everything about us is meant for hunting. Our prey is what we try to attract, with our good looks and smells. But it doesn’t come without a price. You see, all vampires started out as humans. We came from creators. In order to become a vampire, you have to have venom in your bloodstream.”

“The process is slow as it changes you. Physically and mentally. From human to vampire. It is painful.” Alice grimaced for a moment, as if in memory. The whole time she was telling me this, it was as if she were in a trance.

“But soon, you are a vampire. And the process is over. And you live for eternity.” She summed up.

“But that still doesn’t explain how venom gets into the bloodstream!” I exclaimed loudly. Our neighbors turned to look at us, and Alice rolled her eyes, ready for damage control.

“I’m sorry, we’re discussing how the venom from poison ivy gets into our blood stream. We’re from Dartmouth, and studying Botany. Our class got to go on a trip to Europe to study new plant forms.” I chuckled as the people turned away with a shocked look on their face.

“Our teeth are coated in venom.” She whispered suddenly. And then all the puzzle pieces came together for me.

It all made sense.

“Okay. Thank you, Alice.” I said from the bottom of my heart.

“Of course, Bella. You’re one of the family. Just don’t tell Carlisle I told you…” She said with a smirk in her voice.

I laughed out loud and reassured her I would never give her up before settling into a nap.

In my dream, Alice and I were in an ancient city, with hints of Roman influence.

“This is Volterra, Bella.” Alice whispered in shock and horror.

The streets were filled with dead bodies, some drained of blood, and some writhing in pain, screaming to stop the fire.

I looked up and saw Carlisle.

He was fighting three vampires at once, and they were winning.

I screamed and ran to him, yet I was never fast enough. The feeling of defeat was too much. I begged and wished with all my heart I could have helped him, could have been faster, and suddenly I was. I was like him, with stone, cold white skin and immense strength and beauty.

I felt invincible as Carlisle and I tackled the three vampires successfully.

As they lay, dead and defeated on the ground, Carlisle kissed me with passion.

BAM! Dream gone.

Alice was shaking me, trying to wake me up. “Bella, we’re landing.” I was awake for the rest of the plane ride, the landing, and car rental.

Well, car theft.

Alice pulled up in a pitch black Aston Martin, waving frantically and yelling to get in.

“Jeeze Alice! I had no idea vampires were so into car theft!” I said as I slopped into my seat.

She giggled and said, “There are many things you don’t know about us vampires Bella.” She said with a laughing tone.

“Of course.” And then the mood was suddenly serious.

Alice was pulling onto a curvy road, and I could see the town, looking eerily similar to the one in my dream, at the top.

“Volterra’s at the top.” Alice said.

“I know.” I whispered, gripping the seat tighter.

We pulled up to a toll booth like facility where a man with deep olive skin and a heavy accent greeted us. “Welcome to Volterra, enjoy your time in this famous ancient city.” He said as he opened the gates.

Yeah right. I thought, only thinking of Carlisle, and fighting along beside him in my dream.
