Alice had told me all that had happened with Jessica and how Edward had responded. That made me smile, but I was still upset about Edward.
Why wouldn’t he change me? What was wrong with me? Did he really not love me? What really made me so unappealing that he didn’t want to spend forever with me?
I pondered this as I tried to fall asleep that night. But it wasn’t worth the effort. I couldn’t sleep without those cold arms wrapped around me. I sincerely wished that Edward would come back. But I couldn’t ask him to. Then he would win and I would never be changed, and I couldn’t let that happen. I really needed someone. Someone to talk to someone to comfort me…to hold me and tell me everything was going to be alright. I needed my mother. But she was thousands if not millions of miles away.
It was about 11:00 and Carlisle and I were about to go for a run when the phone rang.
“Hello?”, I answered.
“Esme?”, I heard a voice whimper on the other end.
“Bella? Bella sweetheart, what’s wrong?”, I sat down on the couch and Carlisle looked at me. I put my finger to my lips and shook my lips.
“I need my mother.”, Bella whispered sniffling.
“Okay honey. I’ll be right there. You just hold on okay?”, I asked. My eyes were brimming with tears I wouldn’t shed. I felt so bad for her and Edward. They were in a rut and she was hurting. Of course, he was too and I hated to say it but he brought it upon himself and he almost deserved it.
“Okay.”, I heard her whisper on the other end before I hung up.
“Are we going running dear?”, Carlisle asked.
“I’m sorry Carlisle, but my duty as a mother calls. Bella needs me.”
“It’s alright Esme. You go help Bella and we can go run later or maybe tomorrow.”
“I love you Carlisle.”, I gave him a hasty kiss.
“I love you too, Esme.”, he replied. I ran out the door and followed Edward’s scent path that led to Bella’s house. He had gone on it so much, I think the scent would never leave.
When I entered Bella’s yard, I didn’t know if I should knock on the door or go to the window. Bella’s scent blew towards me on the wind. I looked up; her window was open. I climbed the tree and hopped into the room.
I was immediately ambushed in a hug by Bella. Her cries were muffled into my shirt and her tears were soaking through. I just wrapped my arms around her and carried her to the bed. I sat down and pulled her onto my lap.
“Shhh… It’s okay honey. Shhh…”, I rubbed her back reassuringly. Eventually her cries quieted. “Are you okay now?”, I asked pulling back to look at her. She nodded.
“I’m sorry.”, Bella whispered a she blushed a little.
“For what?”, I asked.
“I ruined your shirt.”, she frowned.
“I don’t care about the shirt Bella”, I laughed “Besides Alice can always buy me a new one. Now did you want to talk or do you just want me here?”, I asked.
“I guess I just need someone to talk to, but someone who’s there who can hold me while let out everything I’ve been holding inside. Someone who won’t make judgements and who will love me anyway. Someone who will take this all in and will still accept me, because they know me well. Someone who knows me so well that if I can‘t explain something, they know what I really mean. And someone who will explain why he doesn’t want to change me.”, Bella said slowly. The expressions on her face changed from sentence to sentence.
“Honey…do you want the truth?”
“Yes, the truth.”, Bella said simply.
“Bella honey, the only one who can do all that…is Edward.”, I paused gauging her reaction. She seemed conflicted and was silent for a moment.
“But…if I try to explain to him all that he will cut me off and tell me I’m wrong and he’s right.”
“Ask him to listen to you and all you have to say before he makes a sound.”
“Okay…but if I let everything out…I also have to let out everything that happened last September and the months following. And that hurts him. I don’t want to hurt him.”, she sighed at the end.
“Sometimes, to love someone, a little hurt is necessary because the truth needs to be told.”, I said “ Bella honey, you can’t leave anything out if you talk to him, other wise there will always be feelings built up and one day you’ll snap, let it all out and hurt him much, much more than you will hurt him if you just tell him when you tell him everything else.”
“Alright Esme. I just…need a few days to think. I’ll talk to him on the weekend, when Charlie is gone fishing. Can you tell him that for me?”, she asked.
“Of course.”, I answered right away.
“Esme were you in the middle of something…or about to do something?”
“I was about to do something, yes. Why?”, I asked.
“Well, I just wanted to tell you thank you and if you want you can go now. Thank you so much.”, Bella gave me a hug.
“Your welcome dear.”, I smiled. I climbed out the window of Bella’s room optimistic. Carlisle smiled at me when I came home.
“So how is she?”, he asked in regards to Bella.
“I think there is hope.”, I smiled.
I hoped I was right, but I had no idea how absolutely wrong I was.
