A Not-So-Every-Day Romance

Summary:
I originally wrote this for the Odd Ship Challenge, but since Kaiwynn said we could post it... Jake has recently become my favorite character, and I began this story before that happened. Angela has always been my faovrite one of Bella's normal friends, so it was only natural that I put them together, especially since I couldn't bear to separate any of the real couples. Angela discovers the truth about the Cullens, and about the guy she's in love with. Could it really be true? And what happens when she finds out that Bella wants to be a vampire? Can she come to terms with everything and keep the people who have come to mean so much to her, or will their relationships crumble to dust? There is a sequel now posted: A Pretty Strange Love Story. Look it up!

1. A Night To Remember

There are so many reasons why Bella is my friend. One of them is because she can make anything fun, even going to the movies to see a movie that you don’t even want to see with Jessica and Lauren.

I mean, Jessica is my friend too, but she gossips about everyone, and that makes for some very dull conversation for some one who doesn’t enjoy hearing about who is dating whom.

And Lauren… Well, Lauren is Lauren. She is snide, sarcastic, and just plain mean. I don’t think that she is actually friends with anyone.

The four of us were on our way to Port Angeles to see Epic Movie. Yes, that’s right. The bashing movie for some of the best movies in the past two years. It makes me so angry to watch them mock Harry Potter, the Chronicles of Narnia, and Superman Returns.

Bella knew how I felt, and had done her best to convince Jess to go somewhere else, but she insisted we go see this movie. Bella had had no choice but to give in, and now she was doing her best to make sure that I had fun. She had cranked up the radio, and was singing along with an Oldies song about a cat in a junkyard. She was singing badly, intentionally, and dancing in her seat, so I couldn’t help but laugh. She grinned at me.

“So, where’s Edward tonight, Bells?” I asked her, noticing the annoyed expressions on Lauren and Jess’s face. Bella’s face fell a little as she explained.

“He and his brothers went on a week long hiking trip. They’re going up to Alaska, and hiking the whole way back.”

“What, is he getting tired of you again?” Lauren, of course.

“Lauren!” I admonished.

“You don’t know anything about it, so maybe you should keep your mouth shut!”

Bella shot me a thankful smile. I knew that she didn’t like talking about those months when Edward was in LA. She had been a zombie, a shadow of her former self.

We pulled up at the theater a few minutes later. “Let’s go! We’re already late!” Jessica hurried us. Why did she want to see this movie so badly?

The answer became clear as we looked for seats. There, sitting in the back row, was Mike Newton and a group of his friends.

“Mike! Hey! I didn’t know you were going to be here!” Jessica gushed excitedly. “Is anyone sitting here? Do you mind if we do?”

There were only two seats. After forcing me to come with her, and even asking Bella after their big fight, she didn’t even sit with us.

She had brushed us aside by saying, “Well, I’m sure Angela and Bella don’t mind sitting somewhere else, do you?”

“We could all move,” Mike suggested.

At the look of horror on Bella’s face, I said hastily, “No, we don’t mind. We’ll sit closer to the screen and meet you guys after it’s over.” Mike sighed, but nodded.

“Yeah, yeah, you two better go find seats, the movie’s about to start!” Jess couldn’t contain her excitement at being alone with Mike.

We walked down the aisle slowly. I heard Bella’s sharp intake of breath as we passed a group of incredibly tall, buff, dark guys. I frowned at her. I thought she was totally devoted to Edward!

“Jacob.” She said by way of greeting. “Sam. Paul, Embry, Jared. Quil. Oh, I didn’t see you there Emily. Hey.” A dark girl whose face was marred by hideous scars nodded to her.

“Bella, I don’t see any other seats. How about we just leave?” I asked hopefully.

“Do you really think we can tear Jess away from Mike?” Bella asked with a strained laugh.

One of the tall guys bristled as Mike’s name came up. I tensed as I got a good look at him. He was the most perfect guy I had ever seen, aside from the Cullen’s. But instead of being cold and alienating, like they were, he was warm and friendly. He stared at me as well.

“Oh, how silly of me. Angela, these are some friends of mine from La Push. This is Jacob,” she motioned to the one I had become obsessed with, “and this is Sam, Paul, Jared, Embry, and Quil. And that’s Emily, Sam’s fiancée. Everyone, Angela.”

“Hey.” Jacob’s voice was low, and slightly husky. It seemed to match his appearance perfectly.

“You guys can sit here, I guess.” For some reason, Sam said this reluctantly.

“I don’t know…” Bella was just as tense. She had introduced these people as her friends, hadn’t she?

“It’s fine Bella. Sit down. It’s starting.” Jacob ended the debate. Bella smiled at him, and he smiled back. His smile was heartbreaking. It was enough to send my heart fluttering.

“Angela? Are you Ok?” Bella sounded worried.

I snapped out of my reverie.

“Uhh, yeah. Fine.” I slid into the seat next to Jacob, and Bella sat next to Emily.

Heat seemed to radiate off of Jacob’s skin. Him being so close made it impossible to concentrate on the movie, even if I had wanted to. All to soon, the movie ended. The La Push boys walked us to where we were supposed to meet Jess and Lauren.

They weren’t there! “They ditched us! In the middle of Port Angeles! How are we supposed to get home!” To say I was angry was an understatement.

They had drug me out to see this move, which they had known I didn’t want to see, and then they had ran off with some guys! How typical. I should have known that Jess didn’t want to patch things up with Bella. She wanted to be mean! And if I got caught in the middle, so be it!

“Relax Ang. I’ll call Charlie. He’ll come get us.”

“Don’t worry about it Bella. We brought three cars. You can ride with me.” Jacob told her.

“Why don’t you let the leech-lover call her precious Cullen?” Paul, I think, sneered.

Sam hit him. “Shut up. You can run home if you have a problem. And don’t forget we have some one else here.”

I had a feeling that I wasn’t supposed to hear this. These were some really weird people here, but I couldn’t help myself. I knew that I was falling for Jacob.

Whoa Angela. You only met the guy tonight. You don’t even know his last name! How could you be falling for him? You haven’t even spoken in full sentences around him, and all he’s said to you is ‘hey’. How could you possibly think you were falling in love with him?

Bella was pulling me outside. I realized belatedly that the guys and Emily had already exited the theater, and Bella didn’t want to be left behind.

On the ride home, I tried to make conversation, because the atmosphere was so tense. We had ended up riding with Jacob in his little VW Bug.

“So, how do you two know each other?” I asked innocently.

Bella’s voice was strained as she replied.

“Our father’s are best friends, and then when Edward left, I started hanging out with Jacob. He’s my best friend. I think.” What had I stumbled onto? This was crazy.

“I am.” Jacob said carefully. He looked at me in the rearview mirror.

“I just don’t get along with her boyfriend.”

So that was it. Jacob had a thing for Bella. I was crushed. And then, suddenly, I was inexplicably angry. Bella already had the most gorgeous guy at school falling all over her, plus Mike, Eric and Tyler. What was so great about her?

I stopped myself there. I was starting to sound like Jessica. Bella was one of my best friends, and I was being cruel. It isn’t her fault that everyone likes her.

“Angela? Do you want to spend the night at my place? We could have a lot of fun.”

Bella was so nice.

“Sure.” Maybe I could find out more about Jacob.

Angela! Stop! It’s obvious that they aren’t getting along, and I could alienate Bella, who after what Jess and Lauren did, is probably my only friend.

When Jacob pulled into Bella’s driveway, he got out and opened my door. Bella and I slid out, and we all stood around in the driveway.

“Thanks for the ride Jake. I don’t know what we would have done if you hadn’t been there.”

Jacob looked uncomfortable.

”Any time. You have company, so I think I should go. It was really nice to meet you Angela.” He said turning to me.

“You too.” I said breathlessly. He smiled, really smiled, for the first time all night.

“Edward’s back!” Bella exclaimed.

“I should go then.” I said sadly.

“No! Don’t be silly! Edward has to leave by ten, as long as you don’t mind.”

I was undecided. I didn’t really want to stay if Edward was here, he made me really uncomfortable, but on the other hand, I did want to spend more time with Bella.

“Alright.”

“Great! Come on!”

She grabbed my hand and pulled me into her house. “Dad? I’m back, and I invited Angela to spend the night if that’s ok.”

“Sure.” Chief Swan’s voice sounded from the living room, along with the stats of a baseball player from the TV.

“Edward’s in here.”

“I figured. His car’s in the driveway. Hey.”

“Hey. Hello Angela.” Edward Cullen walked into the kitchen. He nodded at me, and looked at Bella. He took one look at her, and seemed to sniff the air.

"What happened?”

“Long story, and I really don’t want to talk about it. Come on, let’s go upstairs.”

She looked at me. “Are you hungry? I could make something for you.”

“No, I’m fine. Can you point me to the bathroom though?”

“Sure. Right through there.”

As I left I heard Edward ask, “So, what really happened?”

To my surprise, I did have a good time. When Edward left, Bella and I had time for some girl talk.

“So, what did you think of Jacob?” She asked slyly. To my embarrassment, I blushed.

”Oh My GOD!” She shrieked. “You like him don’t you? This is so great!”

I was so confused.

”Why is that a good thing?”

Bella looked downwards.

“Well, I don’t know if you know, but Jake kinda had a thing for me for a while. But when Edward came back, he started acting a cold and mean. He was really mad, and said basically that he never wanted to see me again.”

She continued slyly, “But, if you two were to start dating, then we could go back to being friends!”

I stared at her.

“I don’t think he likes me, though. What if he doesn’t?”

Bella chuckled. “Then we make him. But, seriously, I don’t think we have to worry about it. He was totally staring at you all night.”

I blushed again. Oh, man. I really hoped she was right.
