A Not-So-Every-Day Romance
I originally wrote this for the Odd Ship Challenge, but since Kaiwynn said we could post it... Jake has recently become my favorite character, and I began this story before that happened. Angela has always been my faovrite one of Bella's normal friends, so it was only natural that I put them together, especially since I couldn't bear to separate any of the real couples. Angela discovers the truth about the Cullens, and about the guy she's in love with. Could it really be true? And what happens when she finds out that Bella wants to be a vampire? Can she come to terms with everything and keep the people who have come to mean so much to her, or will their relationships crumble to dust? There is a sequel now posted: A Pretty Strange Love Story. Look it up!

I could not believe that he had asked me out! After fantasizing about him all day, he calls and asks me out!
Calm down. You have to call Bella first. You have to find out if she’ll be home. Maybe we can double date! That would be perfect! Then you wouldn’t have to be so nervous, and she could help you get ready!
I dialed Bella’s number.
“Bella? Jacob called and asked me out, and I’m so nervous, and I was wondering if we could double date? He could pick us up at your place and I wouldn’t have to give directions…”
“Whoa! Slow down Angela! I know he called you, how do you think he got your number? And I don’t know about double dating. Edward and him don’t get along very well. They’d be at each other’s throats all night. But you can come over and get ready here, and he can pick you up here. Friday right?”
“Bella, please? I’m so scared, and you already know him…” and on and on I went. I knew I was babbling, but I wanted to do this. I begged and pleaded until Bella finally agreed.
“I have to talk to Edward. He won’t be happy, so be prepared for a very surly dinner companion. Have you asked Jacob? Cause I don’t think he’ll be too happy about it either.”
But it turned out he was fine with it. At least, he was after he heard Edward had agreed. Bella was very smug when she told me that Edward had agreed.
“I had to really beg, but I won. He just hates it when I do anything with Jake. Would you be ok with Alice getting us ready? She goes all out, I’m just warning you. You’ll have to come a few hours early, but it’ll be fun.”
The rest of the week flew by. I ignored Jessica and Lauren, and spent all of my time with Bella and the Cullen’s. Edward was as surly as ever, but Alice just got friendlier.
“I love to help get hu- girls ready for dates. Bella’s my guinea pig Barbie. I practice on her all the time, huh Bella?” Alice gushed.
Bella groaned. I could tell that she didn’t enjoy being made a fuss over.
When Friday arrived, I rode home with Bella in her rusty old truck.
“Where’s Edward?” I asked.
“I told him to go home. He’s not allowed to see us until we’re ready. Alice is following us right now.” I looked back and sure enough, there was the shiny silver Volvo right behind us with Alice in the drivers seat.
We spent all afternoon getting ready.
“This isn’t a dressy occasion, so how about these?” Alice asked, holding up two matching miniskirts.
They were black with sequins coming up both sides. Alice also had two blouses that must have cost a fortune. The one she handed me was a light pink, and square cut. It showed off the curves that I had, and didn’t show off my stomach. She added a stone studded belt, and a silver star necklace. The finishing touch was a pair of pink strappy heels.
Bella looked gorgeous. With her skirt, she wore a blue sequin belt, and a low cut dark blue blouse. Instead of heels, she wore black ballet slippers. Dangling from her neck was a moon necklace.
Then Alice sat us down on Bella’s bed to do our hair and makeup. She pulled half of mine up, leaving the rest to fall down in waves. Then she added glitter. She applied the makeup expertly, making me look like a totally different person.
She put Bella’s hair in curlers, and pulled it up, except for a few stray hairs that were allowed to curl around her face. Alice put very little makeup on Bella, just enough to make her face shine.
We finished with an hour to spare.
“I have to get home and make dinner. It’s my turn tonight.” Alice said. She kissed us both on the cheek, and left quickly.
“Well, how about I cook us some dinner too?” Bella suggested. I nodded, realizing at that moment how hungry I was.
Bella was an excellent cook. She made taco salad and mashed potatoes, which we finished off in half an hour.
“Are you still nervous?” She asked kindly.
“Not as much now that I know you’re going to be there.”
She smiled. “That’s silly. Jake already likes you.”
“Not as much as he likes you.” I replied quietly.
Before she could reply, there was a knock on the door. She sighed and ran to let Edward in. She tripped on the rug, but he caught her just before she hit the floor.
“My danger magnet.” And then he kissed her, right there in front of me. I looked away, clearing my throat nervously.
“You look beautiful, Bella. You too, Angela.” That was the first time I had ever heard Edward Cullen form a full sentence.
“Thanks.” I said shyly. Then, for some reason, Edward tensed.
“Jacob’s here.” Bella announced, looking at Edward pointedly.
She let Jacob in, and he glared at Edward.
“Jake, Angela’s over there.” Bella said, gesturing to me.
“Hi.” I said with a small smile.
Jacob didn’t say anything. He just stared. I flushed.
“Jake! Stop staring! Can’t you see you’re embarrassing her?” Bella admonished.
“Sorry,” he stammered. “It’s just, you look, amazing.”
“Thanks. You don’t look so bad yourself.” And boy, was that an understatement.
He was wearing a black button up shirt, and a pair of khaki’s. His short hair was combed forward, and he had an earring in one ear. Wow.
“We’ll be late. Let’s go.” He walked past Edward carefully, ignoring him. Edward and Bella drove in the Volvo, and Jacob and I were in his Bug.
“I love your car.” I told him, trying to start a conversation. He smiled.
“Thanks. I pretty much built it myself.”
“So you build cars?”
“Yeah. I’m good with my hands, especially with cars. Do you know anything about cars?”
I laughed. “Well, I know how to drive. And I know where the motor is. And that’s it.”
He laughed with me. “Ok, well, there goes one conversation topic. What do you like to do?”
“I like to draw. A lot.”
“That’s cool. I can’t draw at all, so there goes another thing to talk about.”
“Sheesh! What should we talk about? Do you have any family?”
“I live with my dad. I have two sisters. One of them is married with kids, and the other one is going to college at UCLA.”
“What about your mom?” I asked cautiously, trying not to put my foot in anything.
“She died when I was little.” He looked at my face and said hastily, “I don’t really remember her, so it’s no big deal that you asked. What about you?”
“I live with my dad. My parents are divorced, and my little sister lives with my mom in Connecticut.”
“I’m not. They fought all the time, and I hated it. I was actually happy when they decided to split up.”
“Do you see your mom?”
“Not very often, but often enough.”
“Don’t you get along?”
“My mom wants to live through me. She didn’t get to become a doctor because she had me, and now its like she wants me to fulfill her dreams.”
“You don’t want to be a doctor?”
“No. I want to be an artist.”
“So do it.”
“It’s not that easy.”
“Because…” The real reason sounded so stupid, and I didn’t want to tell him.
“Because…” he prompted.
“I want my mom to love me.” I said in a rush.
Pulling up at the theater prevented a reply, for which I was grateful.
Bella and Edward pulled up behind us, and got out. As we walked in, I fumbled around in my purse for my wallet. I finally found it, and Jacob shook his head.
“No way. This is a date. I’m paying.” I started to argue, but he cut in.
“You don’t see Bella arguing with Cullen over paying, do you?”
“Only because I’ve learned. Guys always pay, Ang. It wounds their egos when we try to pay.”
I giggled as Edward and Jacob shot her a look. She grinned back, and walked into the theater.
We sat in the back. Jacob sat on one end, and Edward sat on the other, with Bella and I in between. Edward had his arm around Bella’s shoulders, and she was laying on his chest.
When the lights went down, I was hyperaware of the heat radiating off of Jacob’s body. I wanted to touch him, but I didn’t dare. I was too afraid that he didn’t want me to.
I sat on my hands to prevent myself from doing something stupid. When I looked over, I noticed that his hands were clenched into fists on his armrests.
“Jacob,” I whispered.
“Hmm?” He looked over at me.
“You could…” I stopped. It was up to him. He took my hand. I know that we had only known each other for a week, but I could feel myself falling in love with this guy. I knew it didn’t make sense, but didn’t all the stories say that love didn’t make sense? All I could do was hope he felt the same way.
I didn’t see any of the movie. All I could concentrate on was the feeling of Jacob’s hand in mine. I saw Bella look over at us a couple of times with a satisfied smirk on her face. She was obviously thrilled that everything was going well.
After the movie, Bella and I said our goodbyes.
“I’ll see you tomorrow.” She hugged me and whispered in my ear.
“Have fun.” I giggled, and she and Edward left.
“Do you want to grab something for dinner before I take you home?” He asked.
I was about to decline when my stomach answered for me.
“I guess that’s a yes.” Jacob and I laughed.
We went to a little diner outside of the town called Patty’s.
“They have the best hamburgers in the state.” He answered my questioning look.
“Cool.” I responded nervously. We were really alone now.
I ordered a BLT, and he ordered a cheeseburger and French fries.
“I’m warning you now,” he began. “That I eat like a pig.”
“Don’t all guys?” I teased impishly. He grinned.
“You’re really easy to get along with, Angela.”
“Thanks, I guess.”
“So, we covered families, ambitions, and hobbies in the car. What else do we need to cover?”
“Hmmm… What’s your favorite movie?” I asked, apropos of nothing. He started, and his smile came back.
”The original Rocky. I hate the later ones. What’s yours?”
I didn’t hesitate. “The Princess Bride.”
“A Ring of Endless Light, by Madeline L’Engle. What’s yours?”
“The Last of the Mohicans.”
We went on and on like this all through the meal and the car ride home. When we pulled up to my house, he walked me to the door.
“Angela, that is the most fun I have ever had eating. We should do it again sometime.” I smiled.
“I’d like that a lot. I had a great time too.”
“Next Friday? Around six?”
We stood there staring at each other for a few minutes.
Then, slowly, he got closer and closer, and bent his head, and then, his lips touched mine. My arms wound around his neck, and I buried my fingers in his hair. His hands traced patterns on my spine. Then, all too quickly, he pulled away with spots of color in his cheeks.
“I’ll call you.” Then he got in his car and left.
I called Bella the next day. After I told her about dinner, I said, “He kissed me.”
Bella gave a girly shriek, and we spent the next couple of minutes talking about kissing. I
t was strange, but it felt normal, unlike when I talked about stuff like this with Jessica, who always made me feel embarrassed.
“So, are you going out again?” she wanted to know.
“Yeah, next weekend. Will you help me get ready again?”
“Of course. I’ll call Alice too. She’ll be thrilled to finally have some one who doesn’t complain while she dresses them up.”
I laughed because Bella was famous for hating to dress up.
The next couple of months went like that. Jacob met my father, and my mother and sister when they came to visit. I met his father too, and saw pictures of his sisters and niece. Jake was like no guy I had ever dated before. He was kind, considerate, funny, and gorgeous. We talked about everything, from my life, to Bella, to his cars. Everything. We shared more kisses, and I felt myself falling deeper and deeper in love with him. But somewhere deep inside, I knew it couldn’t last.
The phone rang late on Friday afternoon. Bella was at my place helping me get ready again. This was our weekly ritual, she and Alice usually got me ready. Today though, Alice and Edward were hiking with their family, so it was just Bella and I.
“Oh, crap! I’ll be right back!” I ran down the stairs, holding up my dress. Jake had said that we were going somewhere fancy, so I was going all out.
“Hello?” I said irritably.
“Oh, hey Jake. What’s up?”
“I have to cancel our plans. Something kinda came up.”
I was stunned. ‘Something came up’ was the excuse that guys used when they didn’t want to see you. That hurt. Badly. I was really in love with Jacob, and now he was ditching me. Wow. Maybe he wasn’t so different.
“Ok, whatever.” I knew my tone was cruel, but I didn’t care. He hurt me first.
“Angela, please don’t be mad. I can’t control this. Trust me, I’d much rather be with you.”
“Sure. Look, I have to go. Bella’s here.”
“Bye.”I hung up the phone. Tears were already building up in my eyes, but I didn’t care. I walked back up the stairs slowly.
“Come on Ang! You’re going to be late!” I shook my head.
“What’s wrong?” She asked, looking at me closely.
“He canceled. He said ‘something came up.’ Isn’t that the excuse that guys use when they don’t want to tell you the truth?” Tears were flowing freely down my face.
“I think he’s breaking up with me.” Bella ran over to me and hugged me tightly.
“No, Angela. There’s no way. He likes you. I know he does! He probably had something lame to do tonight, and he just doesn’t want to admit it!”
“Thanks Bella. You may as well go home. I know you have plans with Edward when he gets home tonight, and you have to get ready.”
She looked at me. “I could stay, if you want.”
“No! You haven’t been spending enough time with Edward as it is. Go.”
“If you’re sure.” She gathered up her stuff and left.
