Before There was Bella
In the stories, Bella was Edwards first and only love. But what if he had been in love, and married, before Carlisle changed him. What would happen if he completely forgot about her, but years later came across her in a hospital, old and dying, after marrying and turning Bella. And what if he suddenly remembered his feelings for this woman. And how would this effect Bella?
This just came to me on a whim. I'm not sure how great it is, so please give me some feedback! Thanks! Only Teen to be safe, by the way.

“Bella? Where have you gotten yourself now? Didn’t Alice tell you that we needed to meet Carlisle at the hospital before we went hunting? She said it was important!” I tried to make myself sound inpatient, but nothing could ever make me even close to being upset with her anymore. Now that she was a vampire like myself, I didn’t need to worry so much about her.
“I’m coming right now, sweetheart. Don’t worry, I’m sure Alice saw us being late,” she sarcastically consoled me, “Besides, she didn’t even tell you what was going on, so why should we rush in?”
Alice not telling me what this was all about was why I wanted to get to the hospital as soon as possible. Nothing good ever came of her trying to block my telepathy. I wasn’t sure that I really wanted to deal with any of her surprises today. All I wanted was to go out hunting and spend the rest of the day with my incredible wife. Was that really too much to ask for?
I suppose the look on my face was enough to make her drop the subject. She ambled down the remaining stairs and threw herself into my arms and gave me a tender kiss. Then, without saying another word, she took my hand and guided me out to the garage where the car was waiting. How had I lived without this amazing woman in my life for all of those years?
The drive to the hospital didn’t last long. Bella still hated that I drove so fast, and refused to speak to me the whole way over. She knew I disliked her critique on my driving. Once again, she was displaying yet another reason why I loved her so passionately. When we did finally arrive at our destination, I pulled her onto my lap and kissed her forehead. I couldn’t wait to get out of the city and into the wilderness, where it could be just me and her for a change.
I reluctantly let my love out of my arms so that we could walk, hand in hand, into the hospital lobby. Alice was there, looking extremely frustrated for making her wait for us.
“Edward, Carlisle wants to see you in his office. Right away, there is something that the two of you need to talk about,” she began without hesitation, “and Bella, you and I are going for a field trip!” She said this last part with a wide smile, which brought a grimace to Bella’s stunning face. She knew that Alice’s version of a field trip would involve shopping.
“Alice, please, can’t we just stay here. I’m sure that they’ll finish quickly…There is absolutely no need for me to spend money on more clothing and…” Bella never got a chance to finish her statement. Alice was already tugging her out into the parking lot and into her Porsche.
I made my way to my father’s office, idly wondering what on earth was important enough to tear me away from my wife like this. I even tried to probe his mind for what was going on, but even he was blocking me. Strange. First Alice, now Carlisle. What in God’s name where they planning? When I opened the door to his office I became even more frustrated. He had begun listing the body’s organs in Russian. They must be hiding something big from me for him to go to such lengths. Could they not have waited a few days so that I could have my time with the love of my life?
“Edward, I really think that you should sit down for this…What I have to tell you, well, it is going to change everything. Even Alice couldn’t have seen this coming.” His speech worried me. Even Alice hadn’t seen it? That had never happened before. Maybe sitting down wouldn’t be a bad idea after all. “Now Edward, I’m going to ask you to just bear with me here. You see, a few days ago, an elderly woman was rushed in here for heart failure. We’ve had her in ICU, trying to track down family members to contact. And, until this morning, we had a hard time getting and records for her. Her name is Melinda Bishop, and she is 107 years old, next week.”
I couldn’t help myself. I just had to interrupt. “And what does this absurdly old Melinda Bishop have to do with me?”
“Edward, she has everything to do with you. Now please, let me finish. We traced her records all the way to Chicago. We tried finding a husband, children, grandchildren. It was difficult. And then we traced her through her high school. And…we found a marriage certificate. Edward, what do you remember of your human life, up to being changed?”
“Not much. I remember my parents, some holidays, and being sick. But other then that, nothing.” I couldn’t see where this was going, and was almost afraid to find out.
“Edward, Melinda Bishop married you three months before you died.”
Silence. Dead. Silence. There were no words for this. But, the situation necessitated them, so I blurted out the first ones that came to mind. “I…married her…Carlisle, are you sure?”
“I’m positive. But Edward, that’s not all, in fact, that may be the easiest part.” I mentally braced myself for whatever was coming next. “When we tried to find relative, we tried to find her children as well. Edward, after you died, she gave birth to a son. Your son. You wouldn’t have known before you died, it would have been too soon for her to be absolutely positive in those times. We would have contacted him, but he died 20 years ago from organ failure. His children also died not to long ago. You’re the only family she has left.”
I could only stare at my adoptive father in shock. He had been right. This changed everything…
