Bella POV

It was the night before Maddy and Masen's birthday party. In between working and going to class, I've been frantically cleaning the entire house, baking and making sure Masen can't get into the decorations. He's turning into a little Emmett - totally fearless. Maddy is my quiet one. She takes everything in before she does something, whereas Masen sees something, he goes right for it.

Jake's been busy working, too. When he's not at the station, he's been taking care of Billy, who's taken a turn for the worse. His sister flew in from Hawaii yesterday to help out as well. Jake swore to me he'd be at the twins' party, but I insisted that if he's needed at home to go and be with his were all sure that it was just a matter of days now until Billy passes. And besides, it was their first birthday, it's not like they're going to remember him being there or not, and I didn't want Jake to miss being with his father during his final moments n account of me.

Edward, amazingly, has stuck to Carlisle's rules. Granted it had only been a week since they were put in place, but still, I was surprised he was sticking to them. He even signed up for a parenting class especially for fathers. I think spending time at the Women's Shelter has opened Edward's eyes to how destructive a temper can be. He's apologized a few times now for his anger, not just to me, but the whole family, including Charlie and Rebecca. I'm still waiting to see his reaction when Jake picks up the kids. He also enrolled at the community college, which he wasn't happy about. He wanted to take classes with me, but Carlisle insisted that if Edward wanted him to pay for the college of his choice, he had to prove that he deserved it. We all new Carlisle would pay, but it was good that Edward had boundaries and goals to work for. I think all of this was finally doing some good.

Every time Alice, Rosalie and I were alone, they'd drill me with questions about Jake and I. They were insistent that Jake had already proposed and that I was just hiding the ring. I keep trying to convince them that the only thing he's done is say he loves me, but they didn't buy it.

"We all saw how you acted last week at the meeting. You wanted to say it, so why don't you. He proposed, didn't he," Rosalie asked.

"No, and I don't want to talk about it. You're just going to set me up for a hard fall when he doesn't ask me."

"Oh please. That boy is in love with you," Alice said.

"That may be, but he hasn't asked and I don't expect that it would be coming anytime soon. He's too preoccupied with Billy at the moment."

"You'd tell us if he asked you, right," Rosalie asked.

"Of course. But he hasn't yet, so drop it, please."

"Yet being the key word, Bella," Alice said.

"You two are incorrigible, you know that."

The next morning was crazy. The twins decided to get into anything and everything they could get their little hands on; Charlie was called into the station unexpectedly, and I couldn't get ahold of Rebecca, Alice or Rosalie for help. My saving grace came in the form of Edward, who kept the twins busy in the living room while I finished up last minute baking and got the rest of the food ready for this afternoon's party. It was about an hour before the party when I noticed it was quiet in the living room. I walked in only to find the three of them passed out on the couch. I grabbed my camera and snapped a quick picture. It really was cute. Maddy was tucked in between Edward and the back of the couch, while Masen was laying on his chest. I grabbed the quilt from a nearby chair and covered the three of them up.

"Thanks," Edward said quietly.

"I thought you were sleeping?"

"I was, but I'm too afraid to move."

I giggled quietly and gently lifted Masen from Edward's chest so he could get up. Once I was sure the two of them fell back to sleep, I went back into the kitchen, with Edward behind me. I pulled out the two small cakes for Maddy and Masen, frosting and two spatulas and sat at the table.

"You know those aren't going to feed everyone," Edward said.

"Yes, I know. There's a bigger one in the fridge. These are for Maddy and Masen to go crazy with," I said mixing the frosting with food coloring.

"Oh. So I was wondering if we could do something with the kids next weekend, if you're not working. Just the four of us."

"Well I work Sunday morning, and Saturday I have a dress fitting with Rebecca. We could do something in the afternoon. What were you thinking?"

"I don't know. Maybe go to a park or something?"

"Is Jake going to mind," Edward asked.

"No. You know, you could help me here, rather than tasting the frosting. Don't think I don't see you sneaking it."

"Sorry," Edward said chuckling.

"I swear Masen gets his sneaky skills from you."

"Me or Emmett. How many drops?"

"Start with four and then mix it."

"Wow Bells, you're really good at that."

"So things are going well with you and Jake," Edward asked.

"Just curious."

"I don't want to get in an argument today, Edward. You know he's going to be here and you promised not to make a scene."

"I know, and I'm not going to. I really am trying to be good, Bella."

A little while later, the house was full of family and friends and the twins were changed into their party clothes. Renee was able to fly in for the party, which I appreciated. She was busy talking to Rose, Alice and Rebecca about the upcoming wedding. The guys were outside throwing a football around. And once again, I found myself i the kitchen. Masen kept pulling himself up on the table with the gifts and there were a few times we though he was going to pull the whole thing down. Maddy was content in Carlisle's arms.

Jake had called and said he was going to stop by the house before coming over to check in on Billy and his sister. I told him not to rush and that I would save him a plate of food. However, he insisted he wouldn't be too late and that he had something special, but wouldn't tell me if it was for Masen or Maddy.

Once everyone ate, we all sang "Happy Birthday" to the twins. Masen clapped his hands and Maddy just starred at us like we were all crazy...which we were. Edward and I stood on either side of the twin and blew their candle out, just before Masen did a face plant in his cake. He was covered in light blue frosting and was hysterically laughing, like he knew what he was doing. I swear that boy gets more like Emmett and Jasper each minute! Maddy put her fingers in hers, but decided she'd rather have her bottle instead.

It must have been about eight when everyone finally left. Charlie and Rebecca went out with Renee, Carlisle and Esme; Alice, Jasper,Rose and Emmett decided to go see a movie in Port Angelas. Edward offered to take the kids for the night, but I declined saying it was going to be hard enough to get them to sleep tonight and they'd most likely want me anyway. Instead he offered to pick them up in the morning so I could finish cleaning and do some homework. Jake still hadn't shown up, and I figured Billy must have gotten sicker.

I was sitting in the living room with Maddy, watching the Wizard of Oz when I heard a tap on the door.

"Come in, Jake," I quietly said.

"Sorry it took me so long," Jake said as he quietly walked in and sat next to me.

"It's okay. I told you Billy was more important. How is he?"

"Sleeping, finally. The doctor changed his pain meds. How was the party?"

"Good. Everyone missed you."

"Everyone," he asked.

"Yes. I just wish Maddy would fall asleep already. I need to finish cleaning the kitchen."

"I'll take her. Besides, this is our favorite part," Jake said holding out his hands for her.

Once Maddy was happily in Jake's arms, I went into the kitchen. I was exhausted. Masen had passed out the second I laid him down in his crib. Once the final dish was washed and put away, I sat at the kitchen table. I couldn't believe it was my babies first birthday party. Where he heck did the time go? I was used to them needing me for everything, and now they're doing things on their own. It makes me sad that they're not my little ones anymore.

"Hey Bella, I think you guys forgot a present," I heard Jake say from the living room.

When I walked in, Jake and Maddy were sitting on the floor. Maddy had a small black box by her feet and was playing with the ribbon.

"Huh. I didn't see this one," I said picking it up.

I removed the ribbon and let it fall to the floor. I opened the box and was stunned. I looked down at Jake, who was on one knee.

"Bella," Jake said as he took my hand in his. "I have loved you from the moment I first laid eyes on you. I want to grow old with you, make babies with you, and watch as our grand kids play on the porch at our feet. I want nothing more than to make you happy for the rest of your life. Marry me?"
