Bella POV

The rain started again, and I didn't care. Edwards hands had found their way to my waist, pulling me closer to him, and with my one working hand I managed to twist my fingers tighter in Edwards hair. I could feel he heavy drops of rain on my skin, and heard thunder in the distance. When the hail started, Edward grabbed my good hand and together we ran back to the Volvo. When we got in, Edward's cell phone rang. I placed my hand and wrist against the cool window.

"Emmett, can I call you...what?...where?...are you sure?...alright, see you soon," Edward said.

"What's wrong?"

Edward didn't say anything, but started the car and tore out of the parking lot. The closer we got to the Cullen house, the faster Edward drove. Something was wrong, I just couldn't figure out what. I prayed it was nothing to do with the twins or Charlie. Then, I saw it: a semi pushed up against a tree, with what appeared to be another car in between them. Edward pulled he car over behind Emmett's jeep. We jumped out and started walking towards them. Emmett, Jasper and Carlisle ran up to us once they saw us.

"Edward," Emmett said.

"What happened," Edward asked.

They all looked at me. Was it the twins? Was it Charlie and Rebecca? My heart started going a mile a minute thinking of someone I loved being hurt.

"We're not sure," Jasper said.

"What's going on? Who's hurt," I asked.

"Bella," Carlisle said. "It's Jake."

Before Carlisle said another word, I shoved my way through them and started running towards the semi. l stopped as I got to the remains of what was a red car.

"Bella look at me please," Carlisle said from behind me. I turned and looked at him.

"Where is he," I asked.

Carlisle put his hands on my shoulders. I knew it wasn't good.

"He's on the other side of the car. Bella, you need to listen to me. His injuries are quite severe. There's nothing I can do for him."

"What? What do you mean?"

Carlisle couldn't get the words out, which surprised me because he was a doctor. I'm sure he's had to tell families that their loved ones were dying or dead. But there's no way that Jake was that bad...right? He would have been responsible enough to get a cab...right? And even if he was too drunk to call himself, surely someone else would have...right? Carlisle lead me around the semi. When I saw him I screamed. Jake was on the side of the road, lying next to a tree. Above him, I saw some of the bark missing. Esme was with him, talking to him and holding his hand. When Esme saw me, I could tell she said something to Jake, because he raised his head a little bit. I saw that he was in pain, and rushed to his side.

"Bella," Jake said. His breath was quick and ragged.

"Jake," I said softly.

"Bella, I'm so sorry."

"For what?"

"For this. For everything. I wanted to find you, to apologize."

"Jake, what are you talking about," I asked as the tears fell from my eyes.

"I needed to talk to you. To explain my actions tonight." He paused to take in a few ragged breaths. "Bells, I was drinking because I already knew what your decision was and I couldn't take it. I know it's Edward you love and not me." He paused again, and gripped my good hand tighter.

"Jake, please, save your breath. It's going to be okay. Carlisle's already called,-"

"Bella. My beautiful Bella. I know what's coming."

"Shh. Don't talk like that."

"Bells, you deserve to be happy. I'm sorry I forced things on you. I'm sorry I wasn't smart enough to wait for the damn cab. I just needed to see you. I knew you would choose Edward. I saw how you looked at him and how he looked at you. I know you have a relationship that you and I could never have. He's lucky really. He'll get to kiss your lips, hear your voice and watch you drift off to sleep every night."

"Jacob, please. It's going to be alright."

"I know you'll be alright. I know he'll love you and worship you like you deserve. Just promise me you'll be happy. Promise me you won't be sad for me when I'm gone."

I looked in his eyes. The pain was apparent and I wanted nothing more than to take it from him, but I couldn't. I ran my hand, even thought it was killing me, across his cheek, just the way he liked it, causing him to close his eyes and smile.

"Jake?"

"I'm still here. You haven't told me you promise yet."

"I promise Jake."

He smiled again and I knew it was only a matter of time. I did the one thing I could think of to make his pain go away.

"I love you, Jake," I quietly said.

I leaned down and softly kissed his lips. I felt his hand on the back of my head, holding me in place; and felt the soft touch of his breath on my cheek. I pulled back a little and rested my head on his chest and closed my eyes.

Edward's POV

I watched as Carlisle went after Bella. Emmett and Jasper had sadness across their faces.

"What happened," I asked.

"After you left, we called a cab," Emmett started. "We told him that we were staying until it came, just to make sure he got home alright."

"But he said he wanted a few minutes of alone time, so we went back inside. When we came back out a few minutes later, the cab was there, but Jake wasn't. Ed, we're so sorry. We didn't think anything would happen," Jasper said.

"It's alright," I said.

We stood there for another minute and then joined Esme and Carlisle, who were standing by the semi, watching in silence. Bella was on her knees next to Jake, and I could see he was struggling for his breath.

"Carlisle, is there really nothing you can do," Jasper asked.

"No," he said shakily. I knew he was struggling too. He was a doctor and yet, he couldn't save him. It was the one thing about his profession he hated. What was worse was that it was Jacob and we all knew how his death, when it came, would affect her.

Alice and Rosalie joined us now. I saw the traces of their tears on their cheeks. I looked back over at Bella, who was kissing Jacob, and I wasn't mad. I knew he had to be close, and that she did it to comfort him, as one last act of love. This wasn't going to be easy for any of us. Esme, as a mother to Bella, was hurting for her, as were Alice, Rose, Jasper and Emmett. I hurt for her as well, only differently than the others. I hurt because I knew it would be up to me to pick up the pieces. I wasn't angry or bitter about it, I just knew it was going to be difficult. I knew she loved him, in his own way. Looking back, I couldn't really hate him. He brought hope and light to her when I tore it away; he put a smile on her beautiful face when my actions tore her to shreds. If it wasn't for him, I don't know where she'd be. I don't know where I'd be.

Finally we heard sirens approaching. Carlisle looked at me, and together we slowly walked over to Bella, who's head was on Jake's chest. Carlisle knelt down next to Bella, and placed a hand on her back.

"Bella," Carlisle said.

"Can you check him, please," Bella said raising her head and falling back on her knees.

I knew he was gone, as did Carlisle, but for the sake of Bella, he checked his pulse.

"I'm sorry, Bella. He's gone."

Bella looked down at Jake again, and then at Carlisle. A hand was still holding onto his shirt, and when Carlisle placed his had on hers, she started sobbing. Carlisle wrapped his arms around her, but Bella pushed him away.

"Can't you check him again," she cried. "Please?"

"Bella, he's gone."

"Don't say that!"

"Shh. He's in a better place," Carlisle said again, placing a hand on her shoulder.

Bella started hitting Carlisle's chest as she sobbed, and Carlisle didn't seem to mind. I knew it was a way to get her fear, anger, and sadness out. After a minute, her head fell on his shoulder and her sobs intensified. Carlisle looked up at me with sad eyes. Bella was on the verge of becoming hysterical, so I scooped her up in my arms and carried her back to my family.
