Another summer came and went and in the fall, I would be starting my junior year in college, working on my bachelor degree in business management. I had applied to a few different law schools here in Washington, but in other states as well. Edward wanted me to keep my options open. Waiting for acceptance letters to law school was more anxiety-ridden than applying for regular college. Edward was doing well in school, too. With everything that happened, he ended up a year behind me, which he didn't mind. Edward still volunteered at the Women's Shelter every now and then and said he found the work to be rewarding. The twins were now three and were now in a daycare center closer to school. Edward and I felt we had used Esme too much, and insisted we enroll them in a center to get them interacting with other kids. She still watched them when we needed to study or go out, but most of the time she sat back and enjoyed being a grandmother. Carlisle was made Chief of Surgery, which made everyone happy. He even surprised Esme with a vacation to St. Thomas - someplace she had wanted to go for quite a while.
Emmett was taking classes with me in business administration, but was also playing football, and wanted nothing more than to be in the NFL. Rosalie's career in modeling is starting to take off too. She's been in a few magazines and on billboards for local companies. Emmett was sure that within a year she's be on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.
Alice had started her own clothing line, complete with her own store in town. A lot of the high school girls frequented the store, since Alice had a beautiful line of dresses and was even starting to create a men's line, which meant that Emmett, Jasper and Edward were used as mannequins and models. She loved every minute of it. Jasper had accepted a position in the Mayor's office. We all knew it would be a matter of time before he would become Mayor Jasper Hale, and eventually Governor and Senator Hale.
Life in the Cullen household was just shy of perfect.
It was a week before my birthday, which I wasn't looking forward too. I never really liked it. To me, it was just another day. I told the entire family that I really didn't want or need anything for my birthday, except for some new clothes. That was a bad idea. New clothes meant a major shopping trip with Alice. But in all honesty, I really wanted to go Rosalie, and I couldn't figure out why. Maybe it was because her taste was a bit closer to mine, in some respects. Maybe it was because out of her and Alice, she was the only one who listened.
My mornings were spent with Rebecca, who was on bed rest and due any day. Her sister, Monica, was coming in from Minnesota to be with her while Charlie was at work. This particular morning, Rosalie accompanied me while we sat with Rebbecca and waited for Charlie to return with Monica. Once they were back, Rosalie and I jumped in her BMW and flew up to Seattle. We drove past Seattle University School of Law - the place I was desperate to get into. It would mean, of course, that Edward and I would have to move, but the twins were still young, so it wouldn't really affect them, and Edward could apply at at the med school.
While at Nordstrums in the dressing room, I heard a distinctive voice coming from the next room.
"Well of course he was gorgeous. I wouldn't have been with him if he wasn't," she said. I recognized the voice as Tanya. Just the sound of her made my skin crawl.
"But was he good in bed," another voice asked.
"Edward was a master in bed. I'm surprised he knew so much for only being with one other girl."
"She must have been a virgin, then."
"Well yeah. Bella was, and continues to be, nothing special. Even James says so. He said she barely knew how to kiss. Poor thing. Wonder what she's up to these days."
"She's probably sitting at home with her kids getting fat," the girl said.
They both laughed and I felt the same insecurities creeping back again. Yes, it's been nearly four years, but still, she had taken Edward from me once, and I'm pretty sure she could do it again. In fact, I knew she could do it again. She had something that I didn't; something I knew only she could give him, and had given him on more than one occasion. While I didn't know it back then, I finally realized she was sexy; beautiful. Everything that I wasn't. She had the tiny waist and the full chest; whereas I had wide hips and a flat chest, well maybe not flat, but it was smaller than hers. She could walk in four inch stilettos, and I could barely walk in regular tennis shoes the majority of the time. She could walk into a room and command the attention of everyone, whereas I walked in a room and hardly anyone noticed. I knew Edward loved me, that much I was sure of. But I often wondered if he didn't wish I was more like her.
I quickly grabbed my clothes and went out to meet Rosalie, who was waiting for me. Here lips were pressed, arms crossed and had a look on her face that basically said the minute she saw the old bat she was going to give her a beat down.
"Did you hear her," I quietly asked.
"Of course I heard. Stupid tramp," Rosalie said.
I placed my unwanted items on the rack and went out to look for a few other things. It wasn't long before I heard Rosalie's raised voice. When I went back to see what was going on, I saw Rosalie in Tanya's face with her finger pointed not an inch from her nose.
"...and if I ever see or hear you talking about my brother, you will wish you never met our family. Edward loves Bella, not you."
"If he really loved her, he'd have married her by now. Don't you think it's interesting, Maggie, that he has two kids with her, but he hasn't put a ring on her finger? My guess is he has someone on the side."
"He has too," Maggie said.
"Hey Bella," Tanya said.
"Tanya," I replied.
"Are you sure you can afford those, Bella? Or have you saved your welfare money to go on a shopping spree? If I remember correctly, those were on the clearance rack, weren't they?"
"For your information," Rosalie said, "Bella can afford whatever she wants. And from the looks of it, she has better taste then you. Tell me, are you still trying to squeeze your fat arse into junior size clothes? That look went out the window, oh, I don't know, ten years ago?"
"Talk about squeeze, at least I didn't have to have a tummy tuck after I was with Edward," Tanya said to me.
I looked down at my waist line. It was a bit thicker than it had been in high school, but I didn't think it was that bad.
"No, you just lied about being pregnant to get his money. C'mon Bella, this store obviously has no idea who shops here. Lets go find something a bit more upscale."
Rosalie grabbed my hand and lead me out the front door. On the ride home, I was quiet. Tanya had gotten to me again like she did before. I don't understand how she could do that?
"Rose, can I ask you a question?"
"Do I really look that horrible?"
"NO! That two-bit whore does. I mean, did you see what she was wearing? She probably got her outfit from the stripper section of the Goodwill."
"Still, I don't look like I did in high school."
"Well of course not! You've had two kids, what does she expect? Besides, look at her. She obviously can't find a man for herself if she's reliving something from four years ago. When you think about it, it was probably pity sex anyway. Now that's pathetic...and sad."
When we got home, Esme was just finishing dinner and everyone was eagerly waiting in the dining room. I kissed Maddy and Masen and brought my bags upstairs.
Bella and Rose had returned home about twenty minutes ago. I didn't really think anything of it at first, as she had quite a few bags of clothes to put away.
"How was shopping," Alice asked.
"Liar," Alice said.
"Really, it was."
"Eward, will you call Bella for dinner, please," Esme asked from the kitchen.
"Sure," I said.
I got up and went to our room.
"In here," she said from the closet.
"Dinner's ready," I said poking my head in the closet.
"I'm not hungry, thanks."
I could see something was bothering her, as she decided now was the perfect time to reorganize our closet.
"Is everything okay?"
"Please Edward, I really want to be alone."
"Okay. I'll save you a plate for later."
"Fine," she said.
Waiting for me in the hallway was Rosalie, who pulled me into her room.
"Edward, there's something you should know," Rose said.
She proceeded to tell me about Tanya and her comments. My heart broke for her and at the same time, I wanted nothing more than Tanya standing before me so I could let her have it. After everything that Bella has been through, and how far she's come since, I would be damned to Tanya come in and with one swift move take it away.
The next day, everyone had errands to run, leaving me with just the twins. I needed to do something to make Bella feel better about herself. I had never seen Bella so self conscious before. It was so bad that last night she wouldn't let me hold her. Instead, she slept on the edge of our bed. When I tried to comfort her, she grabbed her pillow and a blanket and slept on the couch in the living room. She was quiet all morning too. Something was up.
It was just after sunset when I returned home from running errands. It appeared everyone was just getting home as well. I felt bad for last night with Edward, but I really couldn't help it. I can't help the fact that I'm plain and ordinary, and at times I still wondered why Edward love me. Maybe the pity sex Rose was talking about was really directed at me. Maybe he was only with me because of the kids.
"Why are you all standing by the door," I asked.
"Um, we were waiting for you," Rose said.
I walked into the house. On the floor were candles and rose petals. Esme took the bags from my hands. Taped to the mirror on the opposite wall was a note:
Come find me
I looked back at the family, who were smiling. I knew they knew what Edward had planned. I followed the trail of candles and rose petals through the kitchen, dining room, living room and outside to the back yard. There, standing in a large circle, was Edward. He was in a suit, holding a candle and a rose. I carefully stepped over the candles and stood before him.
"Hello beautiful," he said. "This is for you."
Edward handed me the rose. When i brought it up to my nose to smell it, something scrapped the tip of my nose. I couldn't really tell what it was.
"Thank you," was all I said.
He took the rose back, gently laid it on the ground, and took my hands in his, placing them against our chests.
"Bella, you know I love you, right?"
"And you love me, right?"
He quickly looked over my shoulder and took a deep breath. I thought I heard a giggle from Rose or Alice. This was all so weird.
"Bella, love, when I first met you, I knew in an instant you would change my life. You have given me the two most precious things I have ever known. I know I've taken you for granted too many times to be forgiven, but amazingly, you've given me a second chance. Being able to wake up next to you each morning; hearing your beautiful voice; seeing your beautiful face, gives me a reason and purpose in life. I want nothing more than to make you happy every minute of every day. I want to watch Maddy and Masen grow and eventually have more children. There is no one else better than you, Bella."
He placed a finger over my mouth and picked up the rose again.
"Just like this flower started from nothing and grew into something beautiful, so have you."
He started peeling back the layers of rose petals, placing each one in my hand. He was quiet as he did this, never taking his eyes from mine. I hadn't realized he stopped until I felt something hard was placed on the top petal. I looked down and saw something shiny. I went to look up at Edward, only to find he wasn't standing.
He was kneeling.
On one knee.
In front of me.
In front of his family.
"Isabella, please do me the honor of becoming my wife. Let me show you all that there is to see; let me give you everything you desire; let me be the husband you've always wanted."
I could barely breathe. If he hadn't squeezed my hand, I would have sworn I was dreaming. This was better than I had pictured it.
“Yes. Yes Edward, I will marry you!"
