“Hey!” Rosalie called as we entered the hall. Esme came in from the kitchen.

“Hello rose. Who’s your friend?”

“This is Bella. I invited her over for the weekend. I’m going to help her with her trig homework” Esme looked slightly stunned.

“That’s nice of you rose. Hello Bella, I’m Esme Rosalie’s adopted mother” I smiled. I loved Esme, but I had to remember that she didn’t know me.

“It’s very nice to meet you Esme. You have a lovely house,” I said.

“Thank you. It’s my hobby” Rosalie led me upstairs to her room. Emmett was sitting on the bed.

“Hey Rose,” he hadn’t noticed me. He ran to her and kissed her passionately. She coughed. I couldn’t be certain but it sounded like she muttered “company”. He turned and saw me.

“Uh oh. Who’s this?”

“I’m Bella”

“She’s staying the weekend,” Rosalie said. Emmett left and Rosalie unfolded her plan. I had to talk to Emmett, and get him to remember the times we had had together. We did my trig homework, in case Esme checked on us. I went down to make a drink. I spotted a glass plate, possibly one of the survivors from my disastrous birthday party. A knife was on the surface. I didn’t want to do this but Rosalie had reminded me that it was probably a strong memory. I nudged the tip of my finger. Ow

A single drop of blood fell on the floor. More drops. Eventually I stemmed the flow of blood and wrapped my finger in tissue. I cleaned the knife and put it in its original position. Then I left, leaving my drink on the side. When I came back, sure enough, Esme was cleaning the floor with straight bleach.

“Oh Esme let me do that” I said. She quivered slightly as my words registered by her subconscious. Then the fake memories took control.

“No, it’s fine” she said. I knew it wouldn’t be that easy. I headed into the living room where Emmett was lounging, holding a game remote.

“Looking for a competition?” I asked.

“Well, Jasper was supposed to be playing me but he’s vanished (thank you Rosalie). How good are you?”

“I’m okay. You’ll probably win though”

“Excellent!” he called. We played for two hours. Every time I lost.

“Weak!” he said at the end.

“Was not!” I pushed him, hard.

“Pathetic” he jeered. I kept shoving him. Then he quivered. He shook his head, slowly.

Then his eyes widened.

“BELLA!”
“Shhh!” I cautioned.

“What is it?” he whispered. Rosalie came down the stairs and whispered it to him.

“That b***h!” he said, “trying to take away my little sister!”

“That’s why we’re going to stop her. When Edward finds out, he’ll kill her. But we need to crack it”

“Who’s next?” he asked.

“Esme. We’ve already started on her,” I said.

“You actually managed?” Rosalie seemed impressed.

“Yes” I said frostily. We heard Esme coming.

“Well go for the next bit!”

“Sure” said Emmett.

“I was just wondering if Bella could come and watch us play baseball sometime,” said Rosalie.

“Sure. We need an umpire” Esme said it but she sounded reserved.

“She thinks we cheat” improvised Emmett.

“Oh I know you cheat” she shuddered. I went and put my hand on her shoulder, my bite clearly showing.

“Esme, are you okay?”

“Yes. How did you get that mark?” she asked, spotting it.

“I got bitten” Esme froze.

“Oh crap” Emmett whispered.
