We walked into the small cottage and saw my parents curled up on the couch, my mother's head resting in my father's lap. His head shot up.

"Paul's dead?" I had no doubt that the other three were replaying what had happened in their minds, just like I was. My mother shot up quickly.

"How?" There was silence. I wondered if the others were having the same struggle I was. I just couldn't talk about it. It was taking everything I had not to run back out into the forest and hunt down that vampire. I didn't like feeling like that. My father's eyes moved to me.

"Calm down." He left his eyes fixed on me until I nodded my head. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, trying to rid myself of the hatred that was trying to make its way through my body. I opened my eyes and felt everyone staring at me warily.

"Nessie, what's going on?" Jacob's voice was full of worry.

"I... I don't know. I've never felt this kind of emotion before. All I want is to..." I paused, looking over at my parents. My father's face was locked in an expression of disbelief. I couldn't talk like that in front of him. I definitely couldn't talk like that in front of my mother. I looked up at Jacob. His eyes were filled with concern.

"Nessie, you're starting to scare me. Back there in the woods..." He paused, thinking about what he was going to say. "I've never heard so much hatred in your voice before." Jacob was right. It was scary. I couldn't stop thinking about everything that had happened, everything that had been caused by that leech.

"That's enough." I looked over to my father. His eyes were tight, trying to hold back emotion. But I could see the angry edge to them. How could I be thinking things like this around him? I couldn't stand the thought of hurting him like that. His face softened. "It's ok. We'll figure out what's going on. We should go see Carlisle."

As I watched my parents disappear into the woods I felt Jacob's hand on my shoulder. Seth and Leah walked past us and disappeared into the forest. I heard the ripping sounds as they morphed.

"Is it ok if we just walk there?" Jacob's husky voice soothed the uneasy feelings that were running through me.

"I'd like that." I said, still staring into the forest. He moved to my side and twined his fingers in mine. We walked into the forest, heading toward my grandparents house. Thoughts were soaring through my head. Jacob knew something was going on. I imagined I had seemed very distant, distracted. "I'm sorry about earlier." I shook my head, remembering the hatred that had filled my voice. "I'm not sure why I'm feeling so much..." I stopped. I didn't want to say it.

"Hate." Jacob said it for me in a flat tone. He let out a sigh. "I've never known you to be like that before." He was trying to keep his voice emotionless, but I could hear a hint of concern.

"I'm sorry. I just..." I tried to find the words, but then I just let them flow out of me. "I just want you to be safe. I can't just sit by, knowing that something is out there trying to kill you." He surprised me when he let out a chuckle.

"Aren't I supposed to be your protector?" I stopped and looked up into his eyes. I knew he hadn't meant anything by what he said, but this was something I had to get straight.

"No. We're supposed to protect each other. I know I don't know much about imprinting, but I'm starting to think it has something to do with all of this. You said it yourself: the imprint has some kind of pull for me too. Well, I think all this is part of it. I mean, what would you do if you found me hurt like you were?" He looked at me with a tortured expression that switched quickly to anger. He knew I was right. "See, you would want them dead too."

"But I'm made to kill vampires, Nessie. You're not." I could tell he was just worrying about me.

"If it's a vampire that hurts you, yes I am." I wasn't going to let him talk me into staying behind. He looked at me with a tortured look again.

"If anything happened to you..." He broke off. His hands were beginning to shake. I stepped closer and wrapped my arms around him.

"Don't worry. Nothing's going to happen to me. We're going to do this together. We'll protect each other." He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me closer.

"You swear?" He whispered in my ear.

"I swear." And I meant it. I knew Jacob would do anything to protect me. And I was going to do anything to protect him.

He kissed my hair, and I leaned in to his embrace. His large arms tightened around me. I looked up into his black eyes. He stared into mine, adoringly. I leaned up, and he met me half way. His lips crushed against mine, like they never had before. There was urgency in his kiss. It sent a shock through my body and I found myself pressing against him. It was as if I couldn't get close enough. I ran my hand up his smooth back and rested it on the back of his neck, taking some of his hair in my hand and forcing his lips harder against mine. He let out a low moan, but this time it wasn't in pain. His hands were running up my back and clenching at my shirt, trying to pull me as close as possible. I smiled at the idea that he couldn't get close enough to me either. He pulled his lips away from mine, and trailed kisses down my neck. I closed my eyes. My breathing began to get heavier. Jacob's was getting heavy too. He kissed his way up to my ear.

"I love you." His hot breath on my ear had me trembling. I clenched his hair in my hand and pulled him back to my lips. Our mouths moved together eagerly. If we went on like this much longer, I wouldn't be able to stop. I pulled away and looked up into his eyes.

"I love you too." He smiled as he leaned down to kiss me tenderly. He pulled back and looked over my head into the forest.

"We should probably get to Carlisle's." I had almost forgotten about everything. When I was kissing Jacob all I could think about was him. I laughed at myself.

"Yeah, we should." I turned around and started running. I knew Jacob would catch up quickly. I heard the ripping sound behind me and in seconds a big russet wolf was running beside me. We reached the house in minutes and I stepped out of the woods ahead of Jacob as he dressed. I felt his hand against my back when he walked up behind me, and we walked into my grandparents' large white house.

"Where have you been?" Alice was sitting on the couch beside Jasper. The entire family, plus Seth and Leah, were waiting.

"We just needed to talk for a minute." Jacob said leading me to a chair to sit with him.

My father sucked in a breath. He knew that it was more than talking. I blushed and looked down, trying to avoid his eyes.
