"Alright, so what is exactly is going on? Edward said Paul was killed." Carlisle looked at Jacob and I.
"It was a vampire. That's really all we know." Jacob looked down, his face wrenched with pain. I suddenly thought of Rachel. I hoped she was doing all right. The anger I'd been feeling tried to claw its way to the surface. We had to catch this thing.
"It was the same vampire that attacked Jacob. But there was the scent of another one too." Seth spoke quietly. His face radiated sadness. Leah sat beside him staring into space. The pack was going through so much pain. It only made it worse that they all felt it together. I couldn't even imagine what Sam's pack was going through.
"I just don't understand. No one has gone missing, so they're obviously not feeding on the humans." Carlisle spoke almost to himself as he tried to make sense of the attacks. "It's like they're waiting to pounce on werewolves any time they wander into the woods by themselves." His brow crinkled as he thought.
"Maybe they are." My father's words made me look up quickly. He was speaking to Carlisle.
"I don't know..." He paused. He looked toward Jacob. "Have any of you done something to provoke them?" Jacob's head shot up and he looked over at Seth and Leah with alarm in his eyes.
My father cocked his head questioningly at Jacob. "Why would you let one go?" I looked at him, confused. Let what go?
"You let it go?" Leah looked over at Jacob angrily. Jacob sighed.
"It was an accident. He got away." He looked down at me with a look of sorrow. I gasped when I understood. Jacob had slipped up. He had let a vampire escape. And now that vampire was out to get him. It didn't make sense though.
"Wait, if the vampire's after Jake, why did he kill Paul? Why not just hold him hostage until someone came to find him?" I spoke my thoughts out loud. Everyone turned to look at me as I kept speaking. "It doesn't make sense for him to kill Paul, unless he's just out for all the wolves."
I stopped abruptly and sucked in a gasp. Oh no. That's it. I thought. He is out for all of them. I looked up at Jake with worried eyes. He put his hand to my cheek and stroked it tenderly.
"Don't worry. We won't let him get anyone else." I wanted to believe him, but I couldn't. I could feel the tears burning my eyes. How long would it be before another one of my friends died? And who would be next? Seth? Leah?
"I think she's right though." My father was looking at Carlisle as he spoke. Carlisle sighed. He looked up at Jacob.
"You need to tell Sam's pack. We'll start patrolling the woods between here and La Push if that's ok." He raised his eyebrows at Jacob, waiting for permission. Jacob nodded his head.
"We'll go to La Push to explain what's going on." He nodded at Seth and Leah as he set me on the floor and rose out of his chair. I grabbed his arm possessively.
"I'm going too." My father looked at me with disapproval, but I spoke before he could protest. "I want to check on Rachel. She's going through so much." And I can't let him out of my sight yet. The thought was simply to show my father how much I needed to go. He nodded, a little reluctant.
My mother and father ran with us the short distance it took to get to our little cottage. Everyone thought it would be best if we drove. We took my car down to La Push. The car ride mostly consisted of a lot of silence and tension. I drove, letting my concentration on the road serve as a distraction from the anger I was still trying to suppress. We were right outside of La Push when Leah spoke.
"I can't believe you let it go." She sighed angrily. Jacob spun his head around and glared at her.
"I told you. It was an accident." His voice was cold.
"Not exactly. Jacob, you might be able to keep your thoughts from most people, but there are four people you can't keep them from. And one of them is me." She scoffed. "You could have gone after it, but you didn't. You're going soft." I could see Jacob shaking in the corner of my eye. I rested my right hand on his leg, and he gained control of himself. But Leah didn't stop talking.
"Just because you imprinted with a leech's daughter doesn't mean you have to treat every single one you see like family." I could feel Jacob begin to shake again and he growled angrily in his chest. Luckily, we were just pulling up to his house. I parked the car and Jacob quickly got out and went into the house to calm himself. I turned to Leah.
"Leah, cut it out!" I spit the words at her. I let the anger I had been trying to hold back take me over. Leah cringed away from me. I knew my face had to look murderous. After all, that was what I had been thinking about most of the evening. I sighed trying to gather my expression. "I think you need to go home." She looked at me with worry, but she didn't speak. She turned and walked in the direction of her house, Seth following close behind her.
I walked into the house as Jacob hung up the phone. He had probably just gotten off the phone with Sam. He looked like he had calmed down, but he seemed sad. I walked over to him, taking his hand, and looked up into his eyes. I could feel the worry on my face.
"Ness, this is all my fault." He hung his head. "If it wasn't for me Paul would still be alive." I could see the tears filling in his eyes. I placed me hand on his cheek tenderly.
"Oh, Jacob. Don't listen to Leah. This isn't your fault." I wrapped my arms around him, and I felt his slide around me loosely. We stood there holding each other for a few minutes. Jacob looked over my head.
"Where's Rachel?" He asked Billy, who was sitting in the room behind us watching the television. Billy sighed.
"She's with Paul's parents. She's staying over there tonight." He shook his head with a sad expression on his face. I wondered if he had seen her the way I had, hysterical. Jacob nodded his head. He released me and grabbed my hand to lead me to his room. When we reached his doorway, I stopped.
"You don't want to go check on Rachel?" He sighed and took both of my hands in his.
"I just need to be alone with you for a little while. I can barely handle everything that's going on. A little bit of time with you is the only thing that could make me happy right now." His eyes were full of pain and worry. I didn't like them that way. It almost hurt me to look at it. If I could make it go away, then I would. I pushed everything else from my mind and wrapped my arms around him again.
"Alright. We'll stay here tonight." He tightened his arms around me and let out a relieved sigh. I closed my eyes, content. There was something about being in his arms that always made everything else disappear.
