Sirens filled the sir as police cars covered every inch of the narrow street leading to the crime scene. The heavy crunch of boots on crisp autumn leaves was heard as they approached the body sprawled upon the damp ground. It just rained and the blood from the killing was washed away with dirt and rain. On the sidelines of the crime scene stood the three tall, pale men who stumbled across the body while hiking in the woods. But the men’s minds were not on the scene. They knew the wounds on the girl’s body. They knew where they came from. But no one would believe them if they told. For it was common knowledge that vampires didn’t exist. But the three men knew the cold hard truth. Common knowledge was wrong. The girl laying dead on the forest ground was killed by a vampire. But why? Why wasn’t all traces of her blood gone from her body? A vampire wouldn’t kill for the fun of it. A vampire always had blood in it’s mind. So if not a vampire, then what killed her?

Bella waited at home, in a corner of her room waiting for Edward to come back to her. After Edward and his brothers found the body on a hunting trip, he called Bella right away, yelling at her to keep away from the windows and doors. For there was a killer vampire on the loose, and he couldn’t take any chances. Whenever a shadow moved across the room, or an unidentifiable noise was heard, Bella would shriek and look around desperately for the cause of the disturbance. But it was never something. It was always nothing.

“Stay hidden until I come back,” were Edward’s exact orders. Bella wasn’t the rebellious kind and took his warning seriously. She knew what would happen if…she didn’t even want to think about it. All she knew and all she wanted to know was that Edward would be back soon. Or at least she hoped.

Minutes ticked by as Edward, Jasper and Emmett answered every questions the police threw at them.

“When did you find the body?”

“3:45 pm, sir.”

“Is he body exactly as you found it?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Can you identify the body?”

“No, sir.”

On and on the questions were asked. Some even a same question as before but just reworded. Edward’s patience was fleeing and it was only a matter of time before he snapped the officer’s neck. Edward knew what the officer was doing. Playing tricks on him. Trying to get him to mess up. Just one answer that contradicted an older one, and they had a suspect. But then the ‘voice’ that Edward was dreading come ringing into his mind. Bella’s father, Chief of Police, already had a grudge on him. And Edward mysteriously finding a dead body in the middle of the woods didn’t lighten Charlie’s opinion on his daughter’s boy friend. Well, now fiancée, but Charlie didn’t know that.

“Edward,” Charlie stated blankly. Even though it wasn’t a greeting, Edward saw it as his duty to respond.

“Hello, Mr. Swan,” Edward said holding out his hand. Charlie just looked at the pale hand held out to him. Edward let his arm drop to his side after a few seconds of no contact.

“What do we have here?” Charlie asked even though he knew perfectly well what the situation was.

“This young boy and his brothers found this dead body here in the woods. They are now being questioned,” a police man close by stated. Charlie nodded his head as if in understanding, but he was actually sizing Edward up. Looking for any twitching, shaking, any indications that Edward was lying. But he saw nothing. That didn’t ease his suspicions though.

“How long have you been questioning them?” Charlie asked.

“For about an hour and a half, sir,” the police man said. “We have found out all we can, I was just about to let them go home,” the police man said, looking at Charlie nervously.

“Fine,” Charlie spat and stomped away. Edward instantly relaxed and started to walk away.

“Are you on bad terms with the Chief of Police?” the police man asked form behind. Edward stopped walking.

“I’m dating his daughter,” Edward said simply.

“Ah,” the police man responded. He saw how seriously Charlie took Bella. He wasn’t surprised at Charlie’s reaction. Edward started to walk towards his brother’s again and told them that they could go home.

“Finally,” Emmett said a little irritated. Jasper just looked relived. The smell of the blood wasn’t washed away yet, and the hordes of police men didn’t help Jasper from resisting from massacring them all. Needless to say, they got out of there as fast as they could. They started to run when they were out of sight.

“I have a feeling that there is something we don’t know,” Jasper said thoughtfully. Edward nodded.

“The vampire that killed her didn’t drink her blood. I never heard of that before,” Edward added. “We have to tell Carlisle about this. Who was that girl anyway? She looked…familiar in a small way. I…can’t explain it.” His brothers nodded in understanding. They had the exact same feeling.

“What we do know that this is no ordinary cold-blooded killing,” Emmett said gravely.

“I better get back to Bella,” Edward said quickly. He didn’t wait for a response and ran off in the direction of Bella’s house. To his relief, Bella was waiting for him at he door.

“Edward,” Bella whispered frightened. “What happened?” she asked even quieter.

“I…don’t know. We think that it is a vampire killing, but…this one is different,” Edward said carefully. He looked at Bella’s reaction carefully.

“Victoria?” she asked curiously. When Edward shook his head, her eyes grew wide.

“We don’t know who yet, but promise me that you will stay safe,” Edward said, boring his eyes into hers. He knew how it effected her and he needed her to make this promise.

“I promise,” Bella said quickly. Edward relaxed a little, but was still on edge. The girl that was killed…she was so familiar but so unknown. She had curly caramel hair and average features. An average person. For some reason though…he regretted her death. He knew nothing about her, but he knew that her death was not an accident. He knew that she was important. He knew that there was more to the story. He didn’t know how right he was.
