Guardian Angel

Edward Swan willingly removes himself from the Vally of the Sun in favor of Forks, to live with his father, Charlie in a sunless town completley opposite to his taste. He intends to remain anonymous; to suffer in silence and make his mother, Renee, happy. Bella Cullen is a hundred year old vampire with a rather mundane existence. She loves her family; her sisters Alice and Rose, her brothers, her 'parents'... But she can't shake the feeling that something's missing... When Bella meets Edward, both of thier lives are irrevocably altered. The trouble's in admitting it...and wether Edward, fragile and frustratingly human, will survive the journey before Bella gives into temptation. ** I know this idea has been done a thousand times over, but I just couldn't help myself! This actually follows the Twilight plotline really losely; I figured a LOT would be different if Edward was the human one. [banner removed per site regulations]

“What torture do they have lined up for us today?” I asked Alice in a resigned voice as I met her inside the girl’s locker room. She was already changed into her gym clothes, and was staring at me in excitement, practically bouncing up and down on her heels. She didn’t answer me.

“What?” I asked her when she continued to jump up and down. “Alice, seriously, relax - you look like a Chihuahua on steroids.” She obviously didn’t care that she was being compared to an over-energized lap dog, and continued to freak out.

I rolled my eyes, walking past her towards my locker. Rose was already leaning against the metal, still looking like a super model even in her sweat pants and tight tank top. “Hey, Bells,” she said with a smirk, then glanced over my shoulder to Alice. “Seriously, Alice. Bella’s right. You look like a hyped up Chihuahua. Having a seizure.”

I couldn’t help myself from laughing at that one. Alice pranced over, her bottom lip sticking out into a pout as she dropped onto the bench behind me. I fiddled with the combination dial on my locker, and opened it in a moment, pulling out my clothes. I ignored both of my sisters, who were staring at me like they expected something.

“What?” I asked. Alice raised her eyebrows.

“Isn’t there something you want to tell us?”

“…No,” I said, but it ended up sounding like a question.

Rosalie smacked me gently on the shoulder. “Come on, Bella, spill. You had your last class with the boy, and we know you walked here with him.” She raised her eyebrows suggestively. “Seeing as you didn’t kill him, I’m starting to think there’s something else going on here.”

“There isn’t,” I said firmly, pulling off my shirt and tugging my dark blue gym tank top over my head, then exchanging my designer jeans for sweats. “I just don’t want to kill an innocent boy. Is that a crime?”

“No, except that he’s your singer,” Alice said calmly. I winced. I’d figured that was the reason behind my freakishly strong attraction to him. “He should be dead.”

“But I’m in control -” I started, Alice cut me off.

“He should be dead,” Alice said again. “I’ve seen it. He’s your singer. You shouldn’t have been able to resist just because you don’t want to be a killer.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, breathless.

“I mean that you want more than his blood, Bella. You have other instincts besides the vampire ones, if you recall,” she said significantly.

“I don’t believe you,” I said stubbornly, slamming my locker shut.

“Ask Jasper if you need more proof,” Alice said.

Rosalie wrinkled her nose. “I still think it’s weird.”

“What’s weird?” I asked immediately. “What does Jasper have to do with anything?”

“I’ll tell you tonight,” Alice said distractedly, pushing me forward, down the row of lockers towards the wooden door to the gym. “But we’re going to be late.”

I sighed. Our conversation, though spoken at vampire speed to avoid detection, had taken up the last few minutes I had before gym. I took my place next to Alice in line for roll call - it was alphabetical, and since Rose was a ‘Hale,’ she stood down the line.

“You never told me what we’re doing for class today,” I hissed under my breath, too quietly for humans to hear. I scanned the area, looking for Edward. Sure enough, he was walking out of the locker room with my two brothers, both of whom were laughing at something Edward had just said.

“Alice?” I asked distractedly. She hadn’t answered my question. But I was starting to forget what my question was - all that mattered was the bronze haired boy walking between Emmett and Jasper as his gaze flicked to me…

“Ballroom dancing,” Alice whispered. Across the room, Edward gave me a small wave and an enthusiastic smile. I smiled and waved back, unable to help myself. Alice blew a kiss at Japer.

“Ballroom dancing?” I confirmed, suddenly horrified. I’d probably be stuck with my would-be-stalker, Newton. I wasn’t sure if I could handle dancing with him without having the impulse to throw him into a brick wall. He was a bit too antagonistic towards Edward for my liking, which was just another strike against him.

Part of my mind realized that I shouldn’t care if someone was unkind to Edward. It wasn’t my problem; he wasn’t mine…

“You won’t be with Mike,” Alice whispered in my ear. “Our brothers were kind enough to lend Edward some of their extra gym clothes, so he’s participating today.”

“Oh,” I said, all the breath rushing out of me as I focused on Edward, realizing for the first time that he was indeed wearing Emmett’s too-big sweat pants and a deliciously tight shirt of Jasper’s - one that showed off every muscle of his sculpted chest…

Oh. My. God. Edward Swan would be the death of me.

“Oh, is right,” Alice said cheerfully at my side. I tensed suddenly to run. It couldn’t be safe for me to be in close proximity to Edward like this; not when he looked so appealing and smelled so painfully appetizing -

“He’ll be safe,” Alice muttered, grabbing my arm to hold me in place. “Mike Newton doesn’t know what we’re doing today yet, so Edward has the advantage - Emmett and Jasper already told him about it. He’ll ask you to dance. Say yes.”

“But I -”

“No buts, Bella,” she told me as Coach Clapp checked our names off on the attendance list. “Think of it as an exercise in self-control.”

“No! I won’t risk him -”

“Hold your breath, then,” she said exasperatedly. “But I’m just saying, you won’t need to. Now follow me.”

She swept away with the rest of the class. Everyone was sitting in the center of the gym, waiting for instruction from the coaches. I followed Alice towards Emmett, Jasper, and Edward, though part of me was screaming at me to resist the temptation he offered, to run, never to stop until I was too far away to even dream of hurting this fragile human…

The other part of me won out, sitting cross legged between Edward and Emmett, grinning at the doomed human.

“Hey, Bella,” he said in that velvety voice.

“Edward,” I almost sighed, letting myself breath through my nose, allowing his scent to permeate my senses, driving me crazy…

He shifted his leg, and his knee brushed against my thigh, giving me that same electric shock I’d felt when I’d touched him before -

“Sorry,” he muttered, pulling away.

“Don’t be,” I told him. I missed the contact.

He smiled radiantly, and I couldn’t help myself - I smiled back.
