4. Fears and Desires
Rating 5/5 Word Count 2068 Review this Chapter
Pulling into the parking lot at school I found that I was fairly early and there were many parking spots available. Even Edward wasn’t there yet with his shiny, silver Volvo. I smiled at my small victory – today, I would lean against my vintage truck and wait for him.
Edward arrived soon after with Alice in the passenger seat. As soon as the car was parked Alice was at my side, impossibly fast.
“How are you doing now?” her musical voice asked, the concern evident, “Is everything all right with Charlie?”
I wondered if Edward had told Alice about the situation or if she’d seen in it one of her visions. I cast an inquisitive glance towards Edward and he shrugged confirming my suspicion about the vision.
“Things are still rough…” I answered, hesitating as I myself did not really know how things stood at the moment.
Alice nodded, a concerned look on her face, but then almost instantly broke out into a big grin.
“Bella, we have to go shopping soon, really soon, after school today soon!” she said enthusiastically, pulling me towards the school by my arm. Edward followed by my side and wrapped his arm around my waist. I was thankful for the latter as his arm steadied me when I may otherwise trip. I had enough trouble walking on my own two feet regularly, let alone trying to walk when being dragged by a surprisingly strong, enthusiastic, pixie-like vampire. If there was one activity Alice loved more than anything in this world, it was shopping.
“Sure,” I said, a little less enthusiastically than Alice had expected by the look on her face, “but what are we shopping for? Why the urgency?”
A look of complete shock appeared on Alice’s face followed by a look that seemed to suggest I was mentally incompetent. I looked towards Edward’s face for a clue as to what I’d said that was so offensive but he remained looking straight ahead though I could see the corners of his mouth twitching, fighting a smile.
“We have to shop for prom silly!” Alice exclaimed, “It’s this Saturday you know.”
I put the brakes on then, feeling slightly nauseous. I could feel all the colour drain from my face and a feeling of panic overwhelmed me.
“No, no, no. No prom. I went once and I am not going back.”
Even as I said the words I knew it was pointless. Alice’s wide grin faded into a straight line and an almost frightening intensity could be seen in her eyes, almost like electricity.
“Bella Swan, I have not gotten to do enough human things in my life. I want to go to prom, I want to celebrate, I want to play dress up and live vicariously through you. Esme and I have already gotten you a dress. You will go to prom.”
I could hear a soft, velvety chuckle coming from Edward’s direction and I glared at him.
“You knew about this, didn’t you?” I accused him.
Edward threw his hands up in a gesture of surrender and put on his best ‘innocent’ face, but I could see the laughter in his eyes. Stupid vampires and their enthusiasm for stupid trivial human customs. The very idea of prom made me shudder.
“Fine,” I said, as icily as I could, “but why do we need to go shopping if you already have a dress?”
Alice rolled her eyes at me and let out an exasperated sigh.
“Because we need everything else Bella! Shoes, accessories… And I want to pick up a few things for your hair. I have a couple ideas but I want you to come with me so I can find the right ones.”
This day just kept getting worse.
I looked towards Edward for a little help, hoping he’d had enough fun torturing me already, but he was just smiling at me, an amused look on his face. I could feel my face flushing with anger as I stomped off towards my first class.
School went by very quickly, a little too quickly, as it always did when I wasn’t looking forward to my after school activities. I was relieved to have an out towards the end of the day though. Mike had come looking for me, noting Edward’s absence in the afternoon (it had gotten sunny outside), wanting to discuss the upcoming prom and whether I would be going with Edward. I wished for the millionth time that Mike would stop asking me these things. I wondered if Mike really hated my relationship with Edward as much as Edward said he did.
I met Alice at my house after school. I had been smug as I drove myself home after school, for once thankful that I was under house arrest and wouldn’t possibly be able to go to prom or shopping. Unfortunately, it seems that Alice had paid a visit to Charlie at the station during the lunch break and had dazzled him into believing that it was absolutely necessary that I go with her shopping and that prom was an essential part of my life, not to be missed for any excuse with the exception of death. She arrived at my house soon after I did, driving Edward’s Volvo, and I noticed that she was dressed for the sun in a stylish sun hat, large black sunglasses, a light, cream coloured long-sleeved jacket, and jeans. I tried to hide my obvious disappointment that the sun hadn’t cancelled our little outing to Port Angeles. Alice took me to a row of very expensive boutiques that I’d never seen and was surprised existed in a small town like Port Angeles. Eventually, much to my chagrin, I was given my second pair of stilettos, dangley diamond tear-drop earrings, and a jeweled headband that was going to be incorporated into my hairstyle for prom. I objected to the purchases before we even arrived at the boutiques but Alice simply ignored me, enjoying herself far too much to bother with my misery as she almost danced through the stores.
I arrived home just before 8 o’clock – Alice was just as crazy a driver as Edward was – and hurried upstairs to put my purchases into my room. Then I went downstairs to find Charlie watching TV and eating some left-over spaghetti from the previous night. I warmed up a plate of the remaining spaghetti in the microwave and ate quickly at the table. As I was eating, Charlie came into the room and sat in his favorite chair.
“So, you’re going to the prom with Edward then?” he inquired, “Alice came and talked to me today.”
Looking at Charlie’s face I saw only general contentment and a look in his eyes that was genuinely inquisitive. I smiled, happy that the tension of the morning seemed to be gone, or at least temporarily absent. I immediately stopped smiling when I remembered that it was prom we were talking about.
“Yeah, I’m going to go to the prom with Edward… and Alice,” I replied, trying to add some enthusiasm to my voice.
“Just make sure you stop by here after you get ready and before you head out. I’m going to need to take pictures. Renee nearly had a heart attack when you went last year without any photographic evidence,” he smiled as he spoke.
“Sure thing Dad,” I said, still hoping I sounded enthusiastic, smiling back, “At least I won’t have a cast this time."
Charlie seemed pleased with this answer and returned to his place in the living room.
I cleaned up the dinner dishes after I’d finished eating, carefully drying each dish before putting it away. After doing the dishes, I walked upstairs to my room, happy that I wouldn’t have any homework to do tonight. My house arrest had certainly helped with that aspect of my life. My grades were better now than they ever had been - with the exception of calculus that is.
“Goodnight Dad!” I yelled downstairs and upon hearing a mumbled reply from the living room, opened the door and was pleased to find Edward relaxing on my bed – eyes closed, hands behind his head, one leg crossed over the other. He looked like a magazine ad for beds, or a luxury hotel or something. His navy blue sweater and dark jeans contrasted with his pale, marble-like skin and I was awed by his beauty.
He looked up at me from his position on the bed and smiled at me, his ultrawhite teeth sparkling even in the dim light of the room. He scooted towards the wall and patted the space he’d made for me on the bed. My heart jumped into action and I felt my pulse rise but I resisted him and gave him a small wink as I turned away from him, grabbed my toiletries and went into the bathroom. I flossed and brushed my teeth, taking extra care to get every tooth as clean as possible so I didn’t seem to be rushing to get back to fast. Then I changed into my ‘Edward’ pajamas, and carefully walked, forcing myself not to run, back to my room. Edward feigned sleep but was rather unconvincing because he had a mischievous smile plastered onto his face the whole time.
I sat down next to him on the bed and before I realized what was happening, he had moved to a sitting position right beside me. His left arm curled around behind me and wrapped around my waist and he pulled me closer to him while his right hand reached up to my face, gently brushing my hair off my face and then tracing his cold fingers across my cheek, his thumb grazing my bottom lip. It felt almost like electricity charged his touch and gentle sparks warmed my face wherever he touched me. His eyes smoldered, holding me captive in his seductive gaze. The colour seemed rich like molten gold. I briefly wondered if his absence this afternoon was to go hunting but the intensity of his stare quickly derailed my train of thought even though I had a nagging suspicion at the back of my subconscious trying to remind me why this fact was important.
“Did my heart love 'till now? Forswear it sight. For I never saw true beauty 'till this night,” he spoke softly, his voice like a mixture of velvet and melted chocolate, his breath sweet smelling and intoxicating. I felt myself swoon and I realized I’d been holding my breath. I forced myself to breath in and out but found myself struggling to do even that with Edward being so irresistible, so incredibly consuming. I started to lean towards him, wanting only to kiss him, but he placed a finger on my lips to stop me from leaning forward.
“Not yet,” he said with a crooked smile. Then he lowered his head a leaned in towards my neck. He touched his lips to my collarbone and lightly kissed it and my heart raced as I tried to control my breathing. He grazed my neck with his lips, resting them in the hollow of my jaw bone beside my ear, my favorite spot to be kissed. I heard a gasp and realized it was me. I felt him smile against my neck and then suddenly, felt him shift the position of his mouth and I realized with shock that he was resting his teeth against my neck. Judging by the feel of my racing pulse, his teeth had come to a rest right on the vein.
My heart pounded its erratic, irregular pattern as it threatened to jump out of my chest or stop beating all together. A million thoughts raced through my head at once. Was this it? Had he finally decided to change me? What changed his mind? Will it hurt? Will it be quicker if it starts in my throat? Is this really happening? I felt dizzy and overwhelmed, almost like everything was spinning and out of control but I held still, anticipating Edward’s next move.
I could feel him smile, never moving his teeth from my neck and he waited there, perfectly positioned, as if he was waiting to strike. Then he pulled away and whispered almost inaudibly and I wasn’t sure if he was talking to me or to himself.
