I could feel Edward’s body tense and I looked at him in alarm, my heart beating erratically. He was as still as a statue, eyes closed and jaw clenched. He wasn’t breathing. I frowned. Things were never good when Edward wasn’t breathing. I tried to make myself as still as Edward was, watching him warily, uncertain of what was happening. I couldn’t help but wonder if he had almost lost control.
I don’t know how long we sat like that, the tension so thick it felt almost as though I was suffocating, but it seemed to last forever. Finally, Edward opened his eyes. Relief had started to flow through me but stopped the instant I actually looked at his eyes. They were wild with excitement, the molten gold smoldering. It was almost hypnotic but I was too frightened to be lost in his gaze. The usual warmth and cautious control was gone, instead I was left with the truth, what Edward hid beneath his beautiful, angelic exterior. I only hoped it would be quick and painless.
Seeing the fear in my eyes, a look of panic flashed across his face, soon replaced by a dark look I couldn’t quite decipher.
“I have to go…” he said grimly, his usually smooth voice had a hard edge to it.
Before I had time to protest or even grasp the situation he was gone, and I was left alone in my room. Absent-mindedly I realized my hand was clutching my throat in a protective stance and I relaxed it. My body started shaking and I had trouble breathing, my breaths coming in short gasps.
I pulled the blanket off my bed and wrapped myself up tightly, pulling my knees up to my chin, and rocked slightly, trying to warm myself from the sudden chills I felt, trying to calm my breathing. What had just happened?
Eventually, the shaking subsided, though the cold chill remained. I walked to the bathroom and turned the shower on, waiting for it to get hot, filling the room with steam before I undressed and stood under the water. The hot water flowed over my body as I stood beneath the stream, my eyes closed, letting its warmth banish the cold from my skin. I felt my hair fall over my face but I let it stay there, hiding my face from the world.
What had just happened I wondered again.
Getting out of the shower, I toweled off thoroughly, got dressed and then blow-dried my hair. I wanted to make sure I was dry as if that could somehow prevent the chills from returning when I walked back to my room. I walked quickly back to my room and reached out for the doorknob when I heard something behind me.
“Bella? Is everything all right?” Charlie asked me, a look of obvious concern on his face, “I thought you’d already gone to bed.”
“I’m fine Dad,” I lied, hoping my eyes didn’t betray my words, “I just couldn’t sleep so I thought I’d have a shower.”
Charlie looked at me for a few seconds, appraising what I had just said, concern still evident in his eyes. Apparently I passed for okay, because he smiled lightly and nodded.
“I’m going to bed now, have a good sleep Bella.”
He turned and walked away towards his own room and I similarly, turned to enter mine. Making sure the door was closed I ran to the window and opened it.
“Edward?” I whispered, knowing he would hear if he was nearby, “Edward? Are you there?”
He was nowhere to be seen. Sighing, I resigned and got into bed. Pulling the covers up tight around me, I lay back on my pillow, the events of the day taking hold of me, waves of sleep washing over me. Though sleep came easily, my dreams were troubled and when my alarm woke me in the morning I felt like I hadn’t slept at all.
Edward wasn’t in my room and my concern from the night before remained as I dressed for school. Rushing to get some cereal, I ate quickly, washing my bowl and spoon when I finished, and I ran out to my truck. Charlie had already left for work.
As I drove to school the heavy rain that fell ran across the windshield of my truck creating peaceful streams running down the glass. The deafeningly loud roar of my engine ruined any ideas of peaceful rain.
When I pulled into the parking lot, I realized how early I was when I noticed that the teachers were still only just arriving. I pulled into a spot a few spaces down from Edward’s usual spot, and waited in my truck, listening to the sounds of the rain and the beating of my own heart.
I wondered if Edward would show up today. What would I do if he didn’t show up? What if he’d left again? He wouldn’t do that would he? Not without talking to me first, I don’t think.
A black car pulled into the parking lot then and stopped in Edward’s spot. I looked with surprised as I realized it was Carlisle’s black Mercedes, and that Alice was behind the wheel. I got out of my truck and ran over to the car, not caring about the rain pouring down around me.
“Alice? Alice, where’s Edward?” I called out, as I ran.
Alice just motioned for me to get in on the passenger side so I ran over and got into the luxurious black car.
“What’s going on? Where’s Edward?” I demanded, then realizing how harsh I sounded, I softened my voice, “Alice, I don’t understand what’s going on.”
“I know,” she replied solemnly, “I saw something last night, I thought he was going to bite you, but just before I was about to run to get you, Edward stormed into the house and locked himself in his room. He stayed there for a while and wouldn’t answer anyone and then suddenly burst out and left, saying that he’d be back later today.”
Her eyebrows were knit together with worry as she told me what had happened and I could feel myself pale as she spoke of his frightening behavior. I shuddered when I realized that for Alice to ‘see’ him biting me that he would have had to make a decision to do so.
“Bella, what happened? I only saw him about to bite you, but obviously he didn’t…” she trailed off, not wanting to finish the thought that if Edward had bit me I would be dead, one way or another.
My body started to shake uncontrollably and I felt tears welling up in my eyes but fought them back. I cursed myself for being so emotional, seemingly at the drop of a pin.
“Everything was fine, he was just kissing me,” I said, blushing as I realized I was speaking intimately to the girl who considered Edward to be her brother, “and then he just tensed up and left. His eyes were… his eyes were frightening…”
Alice nodded, frowning, a crease forming in her perfect marble skin as she considered this new information.
"I'm taking you home with me," she said, as she pulled out of the parking space, "we need to figure out exactly what is going on with Edward."
