The couple entered the club, without the bouncer even giving them a second glance. No one under twenty-one could be that beautiful. They were in Mexico, on a beach in the middle of the night. The harvest moon shone, making the two vampires sparkle.
Sun tan toes, ticklin’ the sand
Cold drink chillin’ in my right hand
They could not tan and they drank nothing, but the song fit because the sun was down. They were relaxed, completely and utterly. It was not their song, but they danced like tomorrow would never come. And it wouldn’t, couldn’t, for them. This was their eternal night. A beautiful, glorious eternal night which they were both grateful for. They were together forever- nothing would ever end their existence, because, against all odds, they were survivors. Nothing could come between them, their bond was stronger than that between the neutrons and protons in the middle of an atom.
Watchin’ you sleep in the evening light
Restin’ up for a long, long night
Sleeping was something forbidden to them, and they needed no rest. But their eternal night was certainly long. Their bodies moved in perfect synchronization. Beauty, love, grace- all theirs.
‘Cause when the sun goes down, we’ll be grooving
When the sun goes down, feelin’ alright.
They felt no different when the sun was up or when the sun was down, but in their perfection the people watching thought they must have been asleep all day to move like that. Forbidden to sleep, but they cared not- they had other, more important things to do.
When the sun sinks down, over the water
Everything gets hotter when the sun goes down
Edward lifted Bella, holding her high, but when he heard the thoughts of the drunken men in the room, he quickly placed her back on the floor. It was much hotter inside the club than outside, due to the extreme body heat of the humans. The heat did not help nor hurt them, but the atmosphere seemed a bit constricting. Their presence only amplified this.
All day long just takin’ it easy
Layin’ in a hammock where it’s nice and breezy
They had taken it easy all day, but not because they needed to. They had simply enjoyed one another’s company, totally in love. A love so deep one would die without it. If one was gone, so was the other. But that couldn’t happen to them.
Been sleepin’ off the night before, ‘cause when the sun goes down,
We’ll be back for more
Not needing sleep, and not having been drinking the night before, but just taking it easy. However, they were back for more. Dancing, that is. The only thing even close to humanity they seemed to do now.
‘Cause when the sun goes down, we’ll be grooving
When the sun goes down, feelin’ alright.
They made no noise as they danced, and never stumbled. They danced all night and into the morning, but before they could be trapped by the sun. They went back to their hotel, and waited for night to come again.
When the sun sinks down, over the water
Everything gets hotter when the sun goes down
Finally, nightfall came again, and they returned to the same club. They’d been coming for a week, and by now, the bartender stopped offering drinks, the regulars stopped trying to talk to them, just watched in wonder as they danced in their beautiful way.
This old guitar and my dark sunglasses,
This sweet concoction as smooth as molasses.
They’d hunted the day before, and no one was tempted. No sweet concoction for them. Just the bitter taste of the blood that showed everyone they were the free ones. Edward played the guitar sometimes, but his forte was the piano. Bella did wear dark sunglasses tonight, her eyes were still a bit red.
Nothing to do, but breathe all day
Until the big moon rises and it’s time to play.
This time, more of their kind showed up. New ones who the others did not recognize. Edward and Bella continued to dance in spite of what was going on around them.
‘Cause when the sun goes down, we’ll be grooving
When the sun goes down, feelin’ alright.
When the sun sinks down, over the water
Everything gets hotter when the sun goes down
They had played this song every time Edward and Bella had been there. Every time, it was the same dance- although those watching were so mesmerized they did not notice.
‘Cause when the sun goes down, we’ll be grooving
When the sun goes down, feelin’ alright.
When the sun sinks down, over the water
Everything gets hotter when the sun goes down
The others knew the dance. It was not their dance, but they danced it anyway. The regulars were getting crabby with the dance floor being taken by these annoyingly graceful beauties.
Finally, the two couples left. Two newborns and two experienced, new friends who would join the Cullens.
