I slowly opened my eyes. The seemingly endless burning had stopped, but I still felt it in my throat. What was it?

The first thing I saw was the face of the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. She had short, black, spiky hair and she was very pixie like.

I momentarily ignored her and looked around me- I was in a forest somewhere with trees surrounding me. I don’t know how I got there. I looked, again, at the woman. Had she kidnapped me?

“Hi! I’m Alice Cullen!” She trilled.

It sounded like she was singing. She had the most beautiful voice. I also noticed, as the light poured through the trees, that she was sparkling. Who was she? Or what was she?

“Hello. I’m…well, I’m Alice too. Alice Clair.” I said politely- Even if she did kidnap me, it was impossible to be mean to her. She looked so small and innocent.

Why did my voice sound like that though? It was different…very different. Beautiful different…

She stood up, so I stood up too- in one jerky fast move. It almost seemed like I didn’t move at all.

My eyes went wide with horror. Alice Cullen smiled and I felt better.

“Come with me,” She took my hand and led me through the trees. I didn’t think it was possible to run this fast, but I was doing it.

We eventually came to a rather large cabin in the middle of the woods. Why were we here? What was going on and who was she?

Alice reached out and opened the door. She pulled me inside. I followed curiously, though I really had no choice.

There were six people sitting inside, it was almost like they were waiting for us. They all had golden eyes, and the smiles that lit up on their faces were dazzling. They were perfect. Everything about them was flawless. It was like they were angels from heaven.

I frowned and turned to Alice.

“Am I dead?”

* * *

I knew my name was Alice Elizabeth Clair. I knew I was nineteen years old and I was from Austin, Texas and currently lived Columbus, Ohio. I knew that the date was July 31, 1952.

What I didn’t know was what I am. I knew definitely for a fact I wasn’t human anymore. The last thing I remember was being at party. Some strange man asked me to dance. He was actually as beautiful as these people…

After our dance, he took me outside for a walk. When he turned to look me, he bent his head down as if to kiss me, he whispered “I’m sorry,” then I felt his teeth dig into my neck. Then he disappeared and the burning started.

I shuttered at the memory.

One of the men, who had blonde hair and seemed to be the oldest, walked up to me.

“Hello, Alice Clair. My name is Carlisle Cullen and this is my family.”

He shook my hand. I stared at him absently.

How did he already know me? What was going on here?! Mother always told it was not lady-like to ask obvious questions, but these were not obvious questions.

“What am I? Suddenly everything is so different! And, What are you?” I asked in my mysterious new voice.

Carlisle Cullen frowned.

Was I too impolite?

“I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize you didn’t know. Cayla, you, we, are vampires.”

Vampire? Was that possible? Weren’t they just mythical creatures that drink people’s blood and stalk the night? I would have thought him crazy if none of this had happened.

He noticed the look on my face and smiled kindly.

“I know it’s hard to believe, but I promise you, it’s true.” He assured me.

“Yes. I will explain everything to you later,” He sighed.

“Alright. But, how do you know me?” I asked again. Mother would have had a heart attack to see me behave like this. But Mother wasn’t here.

Alice began to talk again, “I can see the future.”

“What?” I gasped, completely confused.

“Some vampires have special abilities. Alice can see the future, Edward can read minds, and Jasper can feel and change your emotions,” Carlisle explained again.

Edward and Jasper? Who were they?

As if on cue, one of the younger looking men stood up. He had messy bronze colored hair and was rather good looking, aside from his perfection.

“I’m Edward,” He chuckled.

Oh. The mind reader. I would have to be careful with my thoughts around him.

“And I’m Jasper.”

I looked at Jasper. He had honey blonde hair and was taller, muscular, but lean. He was even more breath taking then Edward. I couldn’t help but sigh. He was more then perfect, and he probably already had a girlfriend or something. I thought I saw Edward grin and shake his head ‘no’ out of the corner of my eye.

The funny thing was, Jasper looked at me like he was in love with me, and I felt strangely attracted to him. Then I remembered what he could do.

I looked at him and curiously raised an eyebrow.

He shrugged and glanced at Alice. I saw her smile brightly, like she was a match maker who had finally found the perfect couple.

Did she see something in our future?

“I’m Esme!”

I tore my attention away from Jasper to look at the beautiful brunette, who had a kind and sweet look about her, and who had just walked over to stand next to Carlisle. I noticed the wedding bands on both of their fingers and realized they were married.

“I’m Rosalie.”

I looked at the blond sitting on the couch. She was absolutely gorgeous. Her pale blond hair hung down in waves around her face, making her look like an angel. Yet, she was looking at me jealously. What did I have that she didn’t? Then I remembered how perfect they all are. Did that mean I was perfect too?

Edward heard my silent assessment, something I was going to have to get used to, and nodded, with a smile on his face.

Rosalie threw him a nasty look, still managing to look like an angel.

I glanced at the man with his arm around her. He had black curly hair, and was very muscular, like he worked out constantly.

I jumped back at the sight of him. He laughed.

“I’m Emmett!”

I smiled kindly, still wondering why I was here.

Edward heard my confused thoughts, this guy was getting annoying, and said, “Alice-”

“Call me Ali,”

“Okay. Ali, you are going to be living with us now. At least until you can control your self, your one of us. A Cullen.”

Control myself?

Edward chuckled.

“Does your throat burn?”

“Yes, it does,” I said remembering the persistent burning again.

“Your hungry.” he smiled.

Then I remembered what vampires do, “Oh! Blood…”

“Yes, you should probably go hunting,” Jasper stepped in.

“Hunting? People, right?” I asked him terrified.

He laughed, “No. Not people. We drink animal blood. We’re like ‘vegetarian’ vampires.” He didn’t seem to like the idea of being a ‘vegetarian’.

“Oh. I don’t know how to kill an animal.”

“You will. It’s instinctual.”

“Will you help me?”

He stood up and was by my side in less then a sixteenth of a second.

Vampire. I don’t think I was ever going to get used to that. None of this seemed real.

“Come on,” He took my hand and led me out the door. As we stepped out side, I was greeted with a hundred different scents that no human could have smelled- the sweet smell of Jasper, the rich, earthy smell of rot and moss, the resin in the evergreens, the clean smell of water, which seemed very unappealing despite my thirst. I also saw millions of things my human eyes definitely could not see- every detail of every leaf and tree, small bugs crawling around on the ground, everything.

I gasped at how clear everything was now.

“I know, it’s confusing. But you get used to it.” Jasper said, smiling down at me.

I couldn’t help but smile back. He was so perfect.

Suddenly, I caught the scent of something mouth watering, something that sent my throat flaring in pain. I knew instantly what it was. Blood.

I took off after the scent, with Jasper close behind me.

Hunting wasn’t that bad. It just came to me like I had been doing it my whole life. After I killed a few deer, my throat stopped the consistent burning. My thirst was satisfied.

Jasper and I walked through the trees, just wasting time. As we talked, I started to like him more and more, and he seemed pleased with that.

“You’re from Texas,” I said, noticing his southern accent.

“So am I. I was born in Austin, but later we moved to Houston.”

“I was from Houston too,”

“Really? I wonder if we knew each other.”

He sighed, “No, we didn’t know each other. Ali, I was born in 1846.”

“1846?! But how-”

“I’ve been twenty years old for the past century…We live forever.” he explained sadly.

“Forever,” I repeated quietly, “Wouldn’t it get boring? Or lonely? “

“Yes, it does sometimes. But not when you have some one to share forever with.”

The look on his face was real- love. I could only imagine how my emotions must feel to him right now. I think I loved him too, and I had just met him. Perhaps Alice really did see us together in the future. I hope she did. I know I love him.

A dazzling smile lit up on his face as he took in my emotions. I felt my lips pull up into a smile too. He knew how I felt about him now, but I had to tell him anyway.

“Jasper, I-”

Then It hit me- a smell so sweet it left me gasping for more. So much better then the animal blood I had just drank. My throat seared in pain again. I clutched my hands to my neck to put out the fire. I didn’t realize this was the kind of blood I shouldn’t be drinking.
