Chapter 11

“What do you mean?” I asked sharply. She said it so … ominously that I was sure something horrible was going to happen to Bella. Bella sensing my worry laid her hand on my cheek shushing me gently and asked Alice

“What did you see Alice?” Alice still huddled next to Jasper whom was holding her tightly, swallowed and muttered

“Blood, so much blood and you were…were…” she broke off choking on her own words and turned to me, showing me what she saw

Bella was alone in a clearing, being circled by nearly twenty newborns that were crouching low as they circled her. Bella was quiet and appeared calm but her eyes were never still, always flitting around the forest looking for an escape. A flash of fire red hair blurred through the trees, and Bella’s head whipped to the direction that it stopped. Victoria in all her glory stepped out from the foliage and smiled at Bella like she was meeting an old friend. Bella’s eyes widened but she stood her ground.

“Bella, darling how wonderful to see you again; you know I’ve been waiting, and waiting to grasp the right moment, but you always seem to just…slip through the cracks” she motioned with her hands to represent water flowing through rocks

“Guess I’m just fortunate like that.” Bella said nonchalantly but her voice wavered slightly, she slowly spread her hands out behind her.

“Ah, ah, ah, I wouldn’t do that Bella. I’ve heard of your new found powers, they’re quite fascinating really but…I’m afraid they’ll be of no use to you.” As soon she finished her speech each newborn lunged for Bella, her shrieks resonating through the woods. The vision flashed to afterwards when Victoria and her army had left, leaving a mangled and blood soaked Bella behind. Bella was literally covered in blood, no inch left clean. She was torn apart, her muscles and tissues protruding from intensely deep gashes. The ground was soaking up her blood as though it gained strength from it. They hadn’t drained her, which would have been too quick. Instead they had tortured her to no end. Her eyes, though clouded, were still open, and they were filled with terror.

The vision ended and I couldn’t make a sound. Nothing, not a word came from my mouth, I was frozen in terror. Bella turned around in my arms and looked at me, she had her hands on my shoulders and gently shook me

“Edward? Edward darling, come on, tell me what Alice saw” she said imploringly. I looked down at her, then glared at Alice

“That won’t happen, ever.” Alice just gazed at me, still terrified at what she saw

“I – I don’t how we could stop it-

“But we will I won’t let that hap-

“Of course not you imbecile, do you really think I would just step aside and let it?” Alice snapped back to her old self for the most part, get her annoyed or angry and there she is. Bella and Jasper we’re both looking between us as though we were a tennis match until Jasper finally broke in

“Will someone tell us, the two non-mind-readers, what is going?” Bella nodded in agreement and gently took my hand

“Please tell me. Considering it is about me I think I have the right to know.” I shook my head

“No, it won’t happen so there is no reason for you to even know.” And it was far too gory for her to know about, I was a vampire you drank blood and I was revolted in every meaning of the word. She pursed her lips in anger and said

“I should still know” she seethed.

“Yes you should, and since I was the one to have the vision I will tell you.” Alice cut in. I turned and glared at her

Did you learn nothing from Carlisle’s lecture the other day?

“Everyone, calm down; first of all you’re killing poor Jasper here and second of all it does nothing to argue about it.” Esme cut in gently, I had nearly forgotten she was there. I sighed and said

“Es- mom, I really don’t think Bella needs to know.” I implored. She shook her head, her soft caramel hair dancing

“Edward, do not pull the ‘mom’ card out to try and persuade me, if it is about Bella, she should know. Even if it is as horrible as I imagine it to be…” she trailed off picturing Bella laying down, cold, white and lifeless. I shook my head a fraction of an inch and whispered

“Worse, much worse than that” her forehead crinkled and she wondered

Was she changed somehow? I shook my head and opened my mouth to speak but Alice beat me to it. She began to explain her vision quietly, morosely. I felt Bella inch closer and closer to me as the description went on, in turn I held her tighter. Esme knelt beside Bella when Alice had finished and kissed the top of her head, taking the hand I didn’t hold and said

“Bella darling, you are my daughter, as your mother I will protect you whenever need be, don’t worry about that vision, remember how we said the future is not always concrete? Well this could, no is, another example of that. This is just what Victoria wants to happen, not what will happen.” Bella had tears in her eyes, threatening to overflow and she whispered

“Thank-you Esme” Esme nodded smiling gently and stood up to go back downstairs.

“So what do we do now?” Bella asked, looking at each of us.

“We make a plan; we don’t let Victoria within a hundred miles of you, or any of her army. I’ve fought newborns before, it’s hard and nearly impossible but it can be done. We’ll have one of us always with you, no matter what.” Jaspers years of a being a major came in full force, and he was already making a plan of attack in his head. Creating strategies and placements for each of us for when we would have to, inevitably, fight the newborn army.

“I think Bella has been through enough for one night. You should go home and sleep Bella.” Alice cut in, ever the sister. Bella rolled her eyes

“I’m not going to convince you otherwise will I?” we all shook our heads and she sighed getting up.

“Fine, fine, come on.” She said irritated motioning me to follow her. I laughed and bid my brother and sister goodbye and followed Bella outside to the Volvo. She got to her side and waited, knowing I would complain if I couldn’t open her door, it was a simple thing but it meant a lot to me. I was raised to treat her like a lady, and besides if I didn’t I have feeling my mother’s ghost would come and haunt me. She chuckled and smiled at me sliding in. We drove in silence, not feeling the need to fill it. We reached her place and I stopped the car, parking it and turned to her. She sighed and I turned to look at her

“What’s wrong?” I asked, she shook her head shrugging.

“I don’t know it’s just…will I ever have a moment with you without some crazy vamp coming after me?” she smiled weakly. I smiled at her and tucked a loose tendril of her thick hair behind her ear and replied

“Very soon, I promise. Then all you have to worry about is the reaction of people at school at the news of our engagement.” I smiled smugly. She groaned and rolled her eyes

“Oh I can imagine Jessica, that will be lovely I sure.” She gasped,

“We only have two weeks till school don’t we?” she asked. I grinned at her and nodded

“Summer’s gone by quickly hasn’t it?” she nodded absently and grimaced slightly

“What’s that look on your face for?” I asked curiously, she laughed quietly

“Well um, you see…remember the whole, attraction, thing that Enchantresses have going for them?” she asked. I nodded, they did seem to have an air about them, it was mysterious and intriguing, and it drew you in. On Enid, it was more of a…an affection towards her, you liked her instantly but with Bella it was more…on the sensual side, though she didn’t even do it consciously.

“Well…I’m just a little nervous about the male population at our school.” I frowned, I hadn’t thought of that. Maybe if I just got rid of a few of them…

“You can’t kill Mike, sorry Edward.” She sighed sarcastically. I rolled my eyes and got out, opening her door and walked her up to her the porch. She wrapped her arms around my waist and looked up

“So I’m assuming you’ll be staying here, lurking in the shadows, until Charlie goes to bed?” she asked knowingly. I smirked

“Yes, that’ll be me; finally earning my name of creature of the night and all that.” She rolled her eyes and pecked me on the lips

“I guess I’ll see you soon then. I love you.” Those three simple words still sent un-beating heart into palpitations.

“I love you too Bella, always.” I kissed her forehead and ran off into the woods, just as she said, lurking the shadows.

Bella POV:

I walked inside, leaving Edward out to roam the woods, and headed up to my bedroom to change out of the ridicules outfit Alice had put me in, skinny jeans and a flowing black blouse that cinched at the waist and flared out again for about two inches, and into a tank top and sweat pants. I opened the door of my bedroom and look who was lounging on my bed as though she owned the thing.

“How on earth did you get up here?” I asked the black cat who was currently sitting on my bed. She simply stared at me with dark, jade green eyes and swished her tail.

“You’re not going to leave are you?” still staring. I sighed and sat next to her. She stood up and crawled into my lap, looking up at me. She meowed quietly.

“A name, well…I don’t really know what to name a cat considering I never thought I would have one but …” I sighed and scooped her up into my arms, quietly scratching behind her ears

“Fine then, a name…how about…” I racked my brain for something…well in all honesty I wanted something mystic sounding. What can I say, becoming an Enchantress, finding out you have powers and now are about to have a black cat don’t you think you should just…come full circle and do it right? And to do it right is to be all magical and that sort of thing. But I hadn’t the faintest idea what to name her…I grabbed the journal that I kept faithfully on my bedside table and flipped through it, seeing the paragraphs added throughout the years by various women of my family. I saw a name that piqued my interest, Caridwen Swan. Caridwen, I liked it.

“All right how about I call you Caridwen, Cari for short?” she flicked her tail

“I’ll take that as a yes then.” I smiled and set her down

“you’re not going to be one of those cats that destroys all my clothes and furniture and hisses at everyone are you?” she looked affronted and thought of Emmett, though in her mind he was more of 'a great oaf' and how 'she wasn't the least like him'

“Emmett, the great oafs name is Emmett and yes, yes I see how you're so much more mentally devolped than him to realize not to destroy the house...” She rolled her eyes. A cat rolled her eyes at me; I’m starting to wonder if turning into an Enchantress causes you to go nuts as well. I left her up in my room; hopefully I won’t regret that later on, and changed, before heading downstairs to start dinner. I glanced at the calendar hanging on the fridge in the kitchen and counted. Fourteen days until school started; until I was a senior and then after that….after that I would be Mrs. Edward Cullen. The thought both sent a thrill of excitement down my spine and caused a whole flock of butterflies to start in the pit of my stomach. I was extremely happy, ecstatic even but I still couldn’t shake the feeling that…just that something else would go wrong; I don’t know why but I just never trusted when I started to have good luck.

I shook my head ridding it of my thoughts and set to work on dinner. I looked all over the kitchen, in the cupboards, the fridge, the pantry and we were practically bear. I frowned; I had been neglecting poor Charlie. I had hardly been home at all, and worst of all…I was causing him to bring home take-out. Well not tonight, no I would make do with what I have and make him a good home-cooked meal. I hope.

I scrounged whatever I could find and made him spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread and salad. I have to admit I wasn’t just doing this to make up to him; I wanted to get on his good side for when I would tell him about Edward and me; I had decided to tell him. I had been contemplating it for some time, how to go about it, how he would react and well…now’s a good a time as ever. I figured it would be safer (for all of us) if I told him alone so as to avoid the possibility of Charlie trying to shoot Edward. He still didn’t know because… I kind of take my ring off when I’m home. Edward knows and understands how I feel, just not my reasoning behind it; my reason being that if I told Charlie he’ll have a stroke.

And goodness knows what my mother think will…oh no. I have to tell my mom. I stopped mid stir of the spaghetti and froze with fear; my mother, my mother. That’s all that kept going through my head. I couldn’t stop it, what if she didn’t approve? Of course she wouldn’t approve, she drove it mercilessly into my head at a young age that marriage before college was practically suicide for a girl my age. Not that I would really mind, I would still marry Edward but….what if she didn’t come to the wedding? Would she really do that, I contemplated as I was setting the table, would she really just…not come.

No, no she couldn’t do that. I mean I know she doesn’t like the idea of a young marriage but…no I refused to believe that my mother wouldn’t support me. I sighed and peeked out the window, seeing the beginnings of the moons rays shine down on my garden. It still freaked me out a little how quickly I could cause the plants to grow but Enid had come over to help me with the garden the same day that Esme did and she helped me to control it so I don’t bloom everything I touch. That could be awkward. I fidgeted, biting my lip as I looked out the window to my garden. Should I, shouldn’t I… well it’s not like it would harm him or anything it would just…give me a little help.

I made up my mind and hurried outside to the dark and around the house to the edge of the forest. I had my garden set up so that at the edge of the forest on the right side, where we were the last house and the rest went into the dark woods, it was surrounded by the flowers and herbs and plants that I had growing. You couldn’t really see it from the street but if you were to walk around the house you would be greeted by a fantastic view of an enchanted garden; quite literally at that.

I crouched down in the middle and plucked a few violets, but whirled around when I heard a chuckle behind me. I stayed there, crouched down in my sweats, my hair a mess in a bun and plucking violets. Well lovely.

“Now what are you doing may I ask?” came the smooth voice of Edward. I cleared my throat; I wasn’t doing anything bad, so why should I suddenly be this nervous?

“Err…I was just, uh, getting something for dinner tonight. Yea, you know my garden, got to learn how to do this stuff!” I said, forcing it out excitedly at the end as I stood up. He appraised me with a raised eyebrow and looked at me dubiously.

“Why are you so tense then, if it’s just for cooking?” I bit my lip shifting my weight from foot to foot. I scrambled to find an appropriate answer but found none. Oh screw it, I sighed and dropped my shoulders.

“Ok fine, I might have been getting some violets to slip into Charlie’s dinner tonight so he’s more…agreeable.” I could see his lips twitching as though he was fighting a smile, oh, that vampire knew all along what I was going to do tonight!

“Really, why would you feel the need to do that?” He asked innocently. I rolled my eyes

“Like you don’t know” He shook his head feigning ignorance

“But I don’t” I shook my head in exasperation and answered

“Fine…I’ve decided to …tell Charlie…about the … marriage” I whispered the ending. He grinned widely obviously please I had finally worked up enough guts to tell my dad. He hugged me close and kissed my forehead

“Good, I’m glad.” I nodded, too preoccupied with inhaling his intoxicating aroma and just letting myself be surrounded by Edward. They really should bottle this scent; I bet people could get high off it.

“So what do the violets do?” he asked curiously. I smiled; it was sort of interesting that he now had to learn about the mythical creature.

“It creates a realm of peace, calmness. So basically he’ll just be really, really nice tonight. And that will be in my favor.” He chuckled and pulled out of my grasp reluctantly

“You should probably get back inside; your father will be home soon.” I sighed but nodded, kissed him swiftly and started to walk back. When I was back in the kitchen I took the dressing I had made for the salad and deftly sprinkled a few small petals of the violets in, stirring it and poured it over the salad. He wouldn’t even notice it. Right on cue Charlie’s cruiser pulled up and he walked in. I stood nervously by the table after I had set down the salad bowl and greeted him

“Hey dad, I uh, I have dinner all ready for you.” He grinned

“Hey Bells, I’ll be back in a second.” I nodded grinning nervously and waited till he was up the stairs to slump in a chair. This whole magic business was a lot more trouble than it was worth. I was considering the possibility of putting more lavender in, so much so that he may be too incoherent to actually register what is going on when I felt something jump in my lap. I looked down and saw Caridwen.

“Cari, get out of here!” I hissed, pointing to the stairs. She ignored me and curled up in my lap, purring. I sighed and tried to pull her up but she thwacked her tail against my thigh and I took that as a sign to give up. I sighed

“Can you at least wait in the…hi dad.” I said resigned.

“What is that?” he asked pointing to Caridwen.

“Umm….a cat. This is a cat.” That was pure genius on my part; he rolled his eyes and said

“Yes, I can see that Bella. What I mean is why there is a cat here?”

“Oh, ok, why didn’t you say that?” I asked, vying for time.

“Because it was obvious why don’t you answer the question?”

“It’s just a cat Charlie, no big deal really.”

“Answer” I sighed, come on Bella, you can make up a decent lie right?

“She’s a stray and I felt the need to take her in.” wrong, my lying still sucks. Charlie shook his head

“Fine just…just make sure she behaves and doesn’t ruin the house.” I smiled

“Will do” I pushed Caridwen off my lap and whispered

“scat, go on!” she trotted off to the living room and curled up on the sofa arm and stared at us. I pushed the food towards him, practically forced the salad upon him

“Go on, eat up!” he looked at me like I was acting strangely, which I probably was, but obliged and took a bit of everything. I watched him like a hawk as I did the same, but strayed from the salad. As soon as he took a bite I saw him physically relax. We ate in silence and when we had finished I took the plates and cleaned up, hoping the violets had done the trick. I walked out to the living room and sat down on the couch, Caridwen who had been on the floor then, stood up and rubbed against my legs, I picked her up and cradled her to my chest, she strangely gave me some comfort, and her purring calmed me. I took a deep breath and started

“Dad, can I…can I talk to you for a minute?” he nodded, putting the TV on mute. I took another breath and rushed into it

“Dad, right after I had gotten back from saving Edward before, he proposed to me and I said yes. Please don’t be too upset!” I pleaded, clutching Caridwen who promptly play nipped me on the chin to say loosen up. I did, fractionally. I looked and saw Charlie was paler than normal, his eyes wide and he was holding onto the armrests for dear life. Slowly his face began to color; too much though. It went from normal, to pink, to red, to purple. Oh Lord, I was right, he was going to have a stroke, I knew it, but did Edward listen no, no he never does cause he is the high and mighty vampire well I ought to –

“Are you – are you sure you want this?” he choked out, cutting me off. I blinked at him; well…this was going better than I though. Much better actually, thank goodness for violets.

“Yes dad, I’m positive. I love Edward, so much; you should realize that by now.”

“Yea wouldn’t have been able to figure that one out” he muttered. I smiled

“So…what do you think?” I asked quietly. He sighed rubbing his hands over his face and looked to me

“Honestly, I can’t say I’m surprised. You and Edward…I haven’t seen something like that before, you two…it’s like you’re one person. You both move to accommodate the other, neither of you care of yourself, only for the other one. It’s a little…unnerving at times but…if you really want this, if you think that…that it will last, then go ahead. You have my blessing.” I looked at him shocked, it was the longest I had ever heard him talk about my relationship with Edward and I never knew he noticed so much. I stood up, Caridwen leaping off, and hugged him

“Thanks dad” I whispered before letting go.

“Yea well…no problem” he said gruffly, we weren’t exactly the touchy-feely type. Suddenly his face lit up

“Oh ho, but you get to tell your mother.” He finished laughing loudly. I glared at him

“Yes I realized that dad, thank-you.” He was still laughing as I walked up the stairs and flopped down on my bed.

“I told you it would be fine.” A smug voice said, paired with a breeze of cold air and the enticing fragrance I loved. I groaned and rolled over stuffing my face in a pillow

“Yes, yes, you were right, but come on, the violet helped.”
