I breathed steadily, never taking my eyes off Edward. Murderer, my thoughts whispered. I love you, whispered my heart. My head or my heart? My heart could get me killed.
“Bella” he whispered. I ignored him.
“Bella” he said more insistently.
“What?” I asked.
“We’re going hunting”
“Where’s the nearest town?” I asked.
“Miles away” he looked confused.
“Will there be any humans in this hunting ground?”
“Then I’m not coming” I said, flatly. I wasn’t about to change my hunting habits for him. Not a chance.
“Bella, you’re going to have to hunt sometime and we are not letting you hunt humans anymore,” he growled. I smiled; cracks were appearing in his façade.
“Edward, I don’t care anymore that you actually did it. I just wanted to know why you did it. Why lead me on and then order me killed?” he rolled his eyes.
“Bella. I didn’t order you to be killed! They lied to you!”
“Even if they did lie, they’ve looked after me better then you ever did or ever could. And they wouldn’t lie anyway” I snarled. I glared at him.
“So, since I obviously hate you so much, you’d have found a proper mate without having to feel guilty. I’m surprised he hasn’t come to save you by now” he smirked. I wanted to rip that smirk off his smug face. Literally.
“Oh, you don’t have a mate? So, you do think that I care, and didn’t want to desert me completely?”
“No. it’s just, I never found anyone,” I muttered. He raised an eyebrow at me in disbelief. I fought an urge to stick my tongue out at him.
“Shut up!” I told him. He smirked. There was a knock at the door. Alice came in with a bag.
“I saw that Bella wouldn’t go hunting so I bought some donated blood. It’s human but nobody died. Oh and Edward, stop antagonizing her. I see that if you do, you may not be around for very much longer. She wants to rip your face apart right now” he looked slightly stunned, and even more so when Alice burst out laughing at his expression. I decided to try something. I imagined a large soundproof wall in between him and me. Next thing I knew, I could see a faint screen separating us. It was transparent but I couldn’t hear the birdsong that had been pouring through the window.
“Bella? How did you do that?”
“I have a gift. I can create things out of thin air. So I decided to create a soundproof screen, so I didn’t have to listen to him any more”
“Bella, what did they tell you?”
“They told me…that Edward had ordered them to kill me. That they killed him to let me live. And when I saw him, they told me they had to lie in case I decided to enact revenge on him” she hissed.
“Bella, if you ever trusted me, listen to me now. Edward never ordered that. When he got to the ballet studio, he thought you had been killed. There was blood everywhere. And he never got over it. For one hundred years, the only thing he’s done is hunt and sit in his room. He hasn’t played his piano in a hundred years! That used to be his second favourite thing, spending time with you was his first after he met you. Please, believe me” and I whispered the first words of truth, the ones that came directly from my heart.
“I do Alice. But I don’t know if I know how to love again”
