Chasing a Sunset
What would have happened if Bella had sent Jacob and Nessie away during the battle? This is my take on what would have happened.
This is my first fanfic, so please rate and review!! Also, I used chapters to switch perspectives, so the name of the character whose perspective the chapter is written from is in the title of the chapter. Sorry if it gets confusing. Enjoy!

They moved as though they were only one person, one giant, black flowing person. They were swift, and the only noise they made was the soft rustle of their cloaks. You could tell they were ready to fight to the death. It wasn't their first time. Aro would think of it as a waste, but really, he would be as apathetic as the others.
It was at that moment, as I watched the swirling black mass approach our smaller group that I finally accepted we would die. I knew Renesmee would be okay, and that was all that really mattered to me. I knew Edward was a target, and if he went down, then so did I. Those were the things I knew for sure, the "how"s, and "who's didn't matter, I just knew we would die.
As they made their way towards us, I noticed they seemed cautious of my shield. They didn't know if it was like Renata's, or if they could walk right through it. Jane's defeat had stunned them, and they didn't know what to make of me. In their moment of hesitation, we attacked.
I tried to keep my shield around everyone, but I couldn't. It snapped back, and I tried to throw it back out as fast as I could, but was too late. Jane and Alec had gotten to work on several of our friends. Because of the pack's shared mind, Sam's pain, courtesy of Jane, of course was agony to the entire pack. That is, his pack. Leah and Seth were fine. In fact, if I didn't know better, I'd think Leah was enjoying his pain.
After I got the shield back around everyone, their howling, and shrieking stopped, and the real fighting began. Felix was the first to attack. As he advanced towards Emmett, Rosalie let out a hiss, and lunged at his throat. He hadn't seen her, since he was so focused on Emmett, and his battle was over before it began.
Carlisle tossed something small at Rosalie, and she caught it in midair. She quickly lit the pile that was Felix, and tossed the lighter back to Carlisle. The first of the thick, dark pillars of smoke went up.
"Anyone else?" Rosalie hissed. No one moved.
Then as though some sort of spell was broken, everyone moved at once. Near me, I saw Emmett and Rosalie fighting off two of the Volturi guards, while another three approached them, waiting for the right moment to strike. Esme, loving Esme, whom I'd never thought could fight anyone, was fighting one of the female Volturi, I couldn't tell who. By her side, Carlisle was fighting Aro, and I didn't need Jasper to tell me that while Carlisle deeply regretted what he was doing, Aro did not. In fact, he looked like he was enjoying himself quite a bit.
Out of nowhere, something shot towards me. Before I could react, Edward was at my side, fighting off my attacker. Everywhere there were pillars of the thick, black smoke, and I had no idea whose existence had been cut off so abruptly. I guess Carlisle wasn't the only one who had brought a lighter. I could see Edward lighting up another pile, while on the other side of the clearing, Emmett was doing the same.
Everywhere, vampires and wolves were fighting. I looked around, struggling to keep my shield up, while Zafrina and Kate tried to keep Alec and Jane outside my shield. It was the only way this plan could ever work. As long as Alec and Jane were outside of the shield, we were safe. I could tell Zafrina was creating some pretty frightening illusions to keep them occupied, while Kate took her time zapping Jane, before moving on to Alec. I wondered what Zafrina was showing them. Maybe she was just showing them blackness, like Alec does. That would definitely scare him.
Inside my shield it was complete chaos. There were hisses, and growls coming at me from all directions. We were holding our own, but barely. I couldn't tell who we'd lost, but somehow I knew we had lost someone. I looked around, only to find out where a piercing howl was coming from. Seth was curled up in a ball, lying on the ground. I knew before Edward showed up beside me, and told me. He'd been bitten, and there was nothing we could do. It felt like everything around me just stopped. Why Seth? He was still so young; I'm surprised Jacob let him come. He was such a good friend, always full of energy, and happiness. How would we tell Sue? Leah was on the ground, beside her brother. Both of them were still in their wolf forms, and there were massive tears running down Leah's face while Seth howled in pain.
Around us, the battle was still on, but one of the flames I had felt under my shield was now gone. The howling had stopped; Seth was gone. After what seemed like forever, Leah got up. There was a new gleam in her eyes. She was ready to kill the ones who had killed her baby brother. She attacked with such speed and accuracy; three vampires were down before they knew what had hit them. Edward followed with the lighter, and finished the job.
Now I wanted to fight. Like Leah, I wanted to avenge Seth, to find a way to make it better. I didn't know how, but I would.
My shield was nothing now. I could probably stretch it more now, but I didn't want to. The battle was almost over, and the Volturi were retreating. One of the smoking pyres was Aro, and without him, the Volturi were scared. Marcus and Caius were nothing but ashes now too, they had been some of the first targeted. Without their leaders, the Volturi guard looked scared, and they retreated quickly into the forest, and back to Italy to regroup, if they could.
Now it was time to assess our losses. I didn't want to face this part. I saw both packs grouped together, around Seth, and we all let them have some time to begin to deal with their loss. None of the other wolves had been lost. Paul and Jared were pretty beaten up, and were bleeding really badly. Carlisle was with them, trying to stop the bleeding. The rest of the wolves looked about the same. Beaten up, and bleeding, but still alive.
I almost couldn't bring myself to look at how the rest of us fared. I knew I wouldn't see any physical signs of the battle. There would be no scars, not bleeding or bruises. The only way the battle would show on our group was how many hadn't made it through. How many of us were just pillars of smoke now? I looked around. The first person I saw was Edward. He came to me, and we kissed. Not needing to breathe, I lost track of how long we kissed. When we finally looked up, I could tell we weren't the only ones celebrating. Emmett and Rosalie, and Benjamin and Tia, were celebrating in the same fashion. Carlisle and Esme were talking fast, and softly, but it was just as intimate. Everyone else just looked stunned. As it slowly wore off, and it started to sink in that they had really beaten the Volturi, the real celebrations began. There was some laughing, but not much, and a few weary smiles. Off to the side, Kate stood by herself. Tanya was alright, I saw her hugging Zafrina a few seconds ago. I had no idea what Kate was upset about. Then it hit me. Garrett was missing. I hadn't noticed another flame go out under my shield, but Garrett's had been missing. While everyone else started back towards the house, I found Edward again, and even though he couldn't hear my thoughts, he knew exactly what I was thinking. We took off in the other direction, with Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie and Emmett close at our heels. Now we had to find Jacob and Nessie.
