"Jacob!!" Nessie squealed as I pushed her on the swing. "Higher, higher!!" I knew she could jump higher that the swing could go, but it didn't matter, between our combined strength, she was going higher than any of the other kids at the park.

I had decided to stop, and stay here for a while. It seemed safe, and Nessie liked having a park near by. A full day hadn't even passed yet, but we felt safer than we had in a long time. So much had changed in the space of twenty-four hours. We had no idea what had happened to some of the most important people in both of our lives, and weren't sure whether or not we were being chased. We still had no place to stay, and with Nessie growing so quickly, it wasn't realistic to settle down anywhere anytime soon.

"Jacob let me down!" Nessie's feet still didn't touch the ground from the swing, so she needed me to stop her. I grabbed the chains of the swing and pulled it gently to a stop. She hopped of the black plastic seat and raced toward something across the park. "Jacob, what's this?" She held up something that looked like a squirrel, but was missing its tail. That was odd, how did a squirrel lose its tail, was it run over by something? It didn't matter to Nessie what had happened. She was cuddling it and hugging it as though it was her best friend.

"Ok Nessie, we have to go now," I said as patiently as I could. "We have to find somewhere to sleep tonight." The reality of our situation was slowly setting in. Even if we could find a place to stay for a while, we'd have to hide. Nessie grew so fast that she would be noticed after a few weeks. How long would it be before she stopped growing? If she stopped growing. And it she lived after that. And that was when I really started to wonder, what would happen when Nessie was fully matured. Whether she would just live an accelerated human life, or be immortal. If she would die of old age, or someone chasing us. And I finally realized that all this could be for nothing, that she might die anyway. No, I couldn't think that. She was worth it, no matter how long we had her.

Breaking away from my own thoughts, I tried to look for somewhere to stay. Nope, nothing. The only thing to do was to run.

"Let's go Nessie," she turned, sensing something was up. Touching my face, she posed her question.

"No, we can't go find your mom and dad yet, it's too soon. The bad guys might still be there." It broke my heart to see how much she wanted to find her parents. I wanted to find them too, but I had to be the adult, and make sure things were safe. But it had been a day since we'd left, and the battle couldn't last that long, could it? If we were really, really careful maybe we could go back and see what was going on.
