Rebel Seeking Cause

Who is Garrett, really? Learn how he became a vampire, how he was enlisted to witness for the Cullens, and how he and Kate fell in love. Banner by the ridiculously talented Iris Messenger

This is my first Twilight fanfiction! I'm really excited to write it, please R&R! I fell in love with the character of Garrett, and with his and Kate's relationship. I wanted more about him, and figured I would get it, even if I had to write it myself.

I’d assumed he meant Bella.

And sure enough, a brunette vampire was sitting in the airy room. She was beautiful in the vampire way, but that didn’t concern me at the moment. I was more interested in what was perched delicately on her lap.

The only thing I was sure of was that it was a little girl. She had a creamy complexion and bronze curls. She smelled like something I’d never experienced before, vaguely floral. She was absolutely precious. But if she was what I’d thought she was, her very existence would be so wrong. I looked at Edward for an answer, unable to keep the accusation out of my mind. He answered me with a gaze so pleading that it gave me pause. I guessed I could at least hear him out. And, to be honest, I was really interested in why he’d be interested in creating an Immortal Child.

“Please, give us a chance to explain.” Bella spoke for the first time, her voice strained with fear and desperation. I looked at her, and then nodded slowly. Bella rose, and still holding the child, walked near to Edward and me. They allowed themselves a brief gaze into each others’ eyes, and suddenly the baby’s hand was on my face. Before I could react, images filled my mind.

A wedding. An intimate scene, Bella and Edward alone on the beach. Bella pale and gaunt, in her human form. An enormously pregnant woman, her face twisted with agony. Close up on Bella unconscious on a bed, Edward biting her neck with a pained love in his eyes. Bella on that same bloodstained bed, silent, but obviously in anguish. Edward holding a beautiful baby. Bella as a vampire, beautiful, holding the baby. Edward and Bella standing together, holding the baby and gazing at her lovingly. Renesmee.

As Renesmee took her hand away, I looked disbelievingly at Edward, then Bella. All three looked at me with anxious eyes.

“Do you believe us?” The words were in a whisper, spoken so low that they would be undetectable to human ears. The voice was unfamiliar. It was high and airy. And for a second I looked around wildly. I realized suddenly that it was Renesmee speaking. And I also realized that it felt perfectly natural to call her that. As I pondered, I realized they were waiting for me to answer their question. Did I believe them?

I could hardly fathom it, but I did.

“This is your child? Biologically? From when Bella was human?” The words sounded so ludicrous that my mouth could hardly form them. The three nodded simultaneously. It would have been funny if the matter wasn’t so serious.

In that simple moment, everything became clear. I understood their panic, their suspicion that their friends would betray them, their reluctance to accept help. Edward must have asked me twenty-five times if I was sure I wanted to stay to help them. I didn’t blame him for doubting my loyalty. And I wouldn’t blame someone who heard the situation and wanted to bolt in the other direction. In fact, there were times when I was sure I was crazy for staying to help. I didn’t know whether it was my adventurous nature, my affection for the Cullens, or some other unnamed draw. Somehow I knew I was meant to be there. And besides, life could use a little shaking up.
