2. My Immortal

I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone.

It’s been a month since me and my family moved into the Cullen’s old house and every time I look somewhere the memories come flooding back. I told Eliza and Ian that I wasn’t going to go to school here and when they asked why I told them that I lived in this town when I was human. I didn’t mention anything about knowing the Cullens though. No one in my new family knows of my past except for Hanna. She knows that living in this house causes me pain and she’s even offered to trade rooms a few times but I was decline it saying that I don’t want to trouble her but in truth I don’t think that I could live in someone else’s room. While the others are at school I usually play the piano or do nothing.

Eliza works at a beauty saloon in Olympia while Ian works at a police station in Olympia. Many people asked why we didn’t just live in Olympia and Eliza always replied, “We aren’t city people, we’re small town people.”

The crunching of gravel in the driveway signaled my siblings return. Sighing I got up and walked downstairs. Usually I don’t greet them when they get home but I wanted a distraction away from my thoughts about who used to live in this house. The door opened and Wren danced in followed by James. Collin followed and then Hanna. They were all excited for some reason. Looking more closely at Hanna I saw that her excitement was false and instead she was worried and angry.

Confused I asked, “Why are you all excited?”

“A new coven of vampires moved to Forks and when we saw them at school we decided to invite them over!” Wren exclaimed a wide smile on her lips.

“When are they coming over?” I asked.

“Around six when Eliza and Ian get home,” Collin answered.

“I’m going back upstairs,” I said turning around. “Come get me when they arrive.”

I walked up the spiral staircase and into my room. Shutting the door I slid down to the ground and put my head in my hands letting the memories come back. I tried to keep out my most painful memory but it wanted to be remembered and cause me pain.

“Bella, I don’t want you to come with me.” He spoke the words slowly and precisely, his cold eyes on my face, watching as I absorbed what he was really saying. There was a pause as I repeated the words in my head a few times, sifting through them for their real intent.

“You… don’t… want me?” I tried out the words, confused by the way they sounded, placed in that order.

Another memory of that night flashed through my head.

He smiled gently. “Don’t worry. You’re human-your memory is more than sieve. Time heals all wounds.”

I hadn’t noticed that my arms were wrapped around my chest until I felt the pressure. I couldn’t escape the memories, not anymore.

There as a light, unnatural breeze. My eyes flashed open. The leaves on a small vine maple shuddered with the gentle wind of his passage.

He was gone.

With shaky legs, ignoring the fact that my action was useless, I followed him into the forest. The evidence of his path had disappeared instantly. There were no footprints, the leaves were still again, but I walked forward without thinking. I could not do anything else. I had to keep moving. If I stopped looking for him, it was over.

Love, life, meaning… over.

Finally the memories stopped and I found myself gasping for air which was silly because vampires didn’t need to breathe. Unclenching my hands from the back of my shirt I slowly stood up.

There was a knock at my door. I opened it to see Hanna.

“The guests are here,” she said. “Oh, Bella, whatever you do, don’t freak, please.”

I nodded absentmindedly my thoughts somewhere else. Following Hanna downstairs I heard Eliza and Ian welcoming the guests. Eight words shattered the barrier that I had put up around me.

“Welcome to our home, Mr. and Mrs. Cullen.”

These wounds won't seem to heal.
This pain is just too real.
There's just too much that time cannot erase.
