I was on the road. A car sped past and I signaled. They ignored me. I scowled. I’d show them. I ran, slowly for me, so that they could see me. Their eyes widened as I ran past. I waved. I really needed to feed but I doubted there were any animals around. I could see high walls ahead. At last! I had been walking for two hours and running for five minutes (but probably covering more ground then I had in an hour). There was a man at the gate so instead of bothering sneaking in I went round. I put my hands on the walls and dug my nails in. I was on top in a second. Then I jumped and landed on all fours. I went straight to where the Volturi lived. There was a human receptionist and she looked shocked at my appearance. I was covered in dirt and my black clothes didn’t fit properly.

“I need to see Aro. Is he here?” I asked.

“I’m afraid Aro isn’t here right now”

“What about Felix, or Alec? Someone has to be here”

“Miss Jane is here,” I groaned.

“Fine! She’ll have to do” the woman pressed a button.

“Err. Mistress Jane? There’s a girl here to see you. She doesn’t seem happy about it”

“Thank you Martina” said Jane. The lift doors opened and she stepped out.

“Jane” I said. She gestured for me to follow and went back into the lift.

“So. What are you doing here? I thought you were set with the Cullen’s”

“Apparently not. I had a little incident with another vampire. My eyes go red when I’m angry. They assumed that I’d been ‘cheating’ and Jasper got angry. The annoying hypocrite. He’s never liked me,” I explained. She seemed to be deep in thought.

“Aro said that I should come back if it didn’t work out. Look, Jane, I know you don’t like me. I don’t know why, but I’m not here to annoy you. I’m here to escape. I don’t want to live any more”

“You came here get killed?” she sounded appalled.

“Maybe. Unless there’s a job for me. I want to get revenge first though”

“Who was this guy?”

“His name is John Cope. He’s an incubus,” I snarled. To my surprise, so did Jane.

“That snake! If you’re taking him down, I want to help!”

“What did he do to you?”

“He was my mate. He occasionally disappeared for a day or two. He said he was hunting. Then I went hunting. When I came back, I found him having sex with an ex-member of the Volturi. He ran. But I had no idea that he was an incubus” she said. I could understand why she hated him now.

“Okay. We take him down together. But I need to find out if I’m joining or leaving the world altogether. When’s Aro getting back?”

“He’s here already. But Martina is instructed to tell people he’s out, unless he says otherwise. I’m left to deal with the visitors, or Heidi is”

“What about Alec and Felix?”

“Felix is out hunting, Alec is here though,” she said. She seemed lost in thought. We reached the right level and exited the lift. She led me to a circular room containing three thrones. Marcus, Aro and Caius.

“Ah! Hello Cadyna! How are you? I assumed due to your appearance and late hour that it’s not a social call?”

“No. I’m afraid not. I had a little trouble a few days ago. I need a place to stay. And I need to sort something out” he nodded.

“I won’t ask,” he said.

“Aro?” Caius asked, “What is this?”

“I offered Cadyna a place to stay if the need arose. She can do work for us if she wants to”

“Why weren’t we consulted?”

“Oh, I assumed it would be fine”

“Don’t worry Aro; I’ll leave if I have to”

“No, Cadyna. Its fine, he’s still sore about you removing his ability to speak last time you were here”

“I aim never to please,” I said.

“Well, we need to have a discussion. So if you can leave? I’ll see you soon” Jane led me out.

“I’ll show you to a room. If you get to stay, you’ll need somewhere to sleep,” she said. She led me to a large, room. It was different from the cell I had been confined in before. It was airy, and paneled with wood instead of the hard, cold stone I had before. It had a large, four poster bed with crimson curtains.

“Why do you have a bed?”

“Honored guests. Aro occasionally finds a delicacy. He makes sure they are well treated then, at special occasions…”

“Oh. So I’m sleeping in a dead person’s bed”

“Nice thought” I sighed.

Aro came in after about an hour.

“We have reached a decision. Caius believes that you should ‘pay’ to stay”

“I don’t have any cash”

“We don’t need money. We have enough of that! No, work for us”

“Excellent. When can you start?”

“Soon. But I have something I need to take care of first”
