You're Still Here!

Somebody comes to Forks that Edward thought should have died a long time ago. How will this new arrival affect the Cullens' and Bella's life? I know it says no spoilers, but there actually are a few. DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the Twilight characters!

I just thought of this one day and decided it would be cool to write.

Bella’s P.O.V.

“It’s okay Bella. I‘m fine,” Jacob told me, finally coming out of his trance about a minute later. “But Bella, there’s a lot of things about werewolves that I haven’t gotten to tell you yet.”

“Like what? What happened to you just then?”

“That’s what I’d like to know,” Karen said.

“I ummm, I, well, do you know what imprinting is?” he asked me.

“No. Should I?”

“No. It’s happened to a few other members of the pack. It’s where, ummm, well, ummm….”

“Just spit it out Jake. What is it?” Why couldn’t he just tell me?

“Well, ummm, it’s how we find our soul mates. Or some of us, at least. It’s supposed to be very rare,” he said timidly.

“Find your soul mates? How does that happen?”

“I’d like to know,” Clara said.

“Well, when you see that certain person for the first time, or for the first time after you become a wolf, then you imprint on them,” he said, to everyone now, since they were all looking at them curiously.

“So it’s kind of like love at first sight?” I asked, doubting. I’d never really ever believed in love at first sight. Of course, I’d never really believed in a lot of things that had turned out to be true before I moved to Forks.

“Kind of, except stronger.”

“Crazy mutts,” Rosalie said under her breath, just loud enough for me to hear. She was trying to torment him, I had no doubt, but he didn’t respond to it. That was good. We didn’t need a fight now. Emmett laughed, though.

“So what does this have to do with you freezing up a few minutes ago?”

“Oh, well, ummm….”

“Jake come on. You can tell me. What happened- oh,” I said, finally realizing why he told me about imprinting. “Did you just…?”

“…Yeah,” he said, and I saw a little bit of a blush underneath his dark skin.

“On?” I asked, wondering exactly who he imprinted on.

He looked over towards where Karen, Clara, and Sandra were standing in a group, but he didn’t say anything.

“He imprinted on Karen, Bella,” Edward whispered to me.

“What?! He did what on me?” Karen asked.

“He imprinted on you,” Edward answered her. “But I can’t understand how. I mean, you’re a vampire.”

“That’s what I’m wondering, too,” Jake agreed.

“I don’t see why werewolves couldn’t imprint on vampires.” This was Carlisle. “We all were once just regular humans. There’s no good reason why it should be impossible.”

“I suppose,” Edward said, but he didn‘t sound like he fully accepted it.

“So wait. Let me get this straight. You’re telling me that just because this guy looked at me, I’m now his freakin’ soul mate?!” Karen practically shouted. I didn’t blame her. This was a lot to take in for me, and I wasn’t the one who just got my soul mate assigned to me, either.

“Calm down, Karen,” Clara said.

“No way! This is so unfair! I don’t even know this guy, and now you are all telling me we’re going to live a happily-ever-after together? Can’t I choose my own boyfriend?!”

“Yes, you can,” Jake said, sounding sort of heartbroken and upset. “I just can’t. You’re still free to choose whoever you want.”

“Okay, then.”

“Just don’t expect to get rid of me easily,” Jake warned her.

“Why not?” Karen asked, sounding a little peeved again.

“Because you’re still my soul mate, and it’s not going to be too easy, I don’t think even possible, for me to stay away from you. Of course, I’m just going off what I know from others in the pack who have imprinted and what they feel, and what I’m feeling now, but if you want me to stay away, I’ll try. As long as you’re happy.”

“Okay, now you’re really freaking me out. What the heck do you mean ‘as long as I’m happy’?”

“All I want is for you to be happy. If me staying away makes you happy, I’ll try,” he told her.

It was really killing me to see him so upset. Why couldn’t Karen just try this whole imprinting thing out before breaking his heart. And then another thought hit me. She was breaking his heart. He really did love her now, even though he’s only known her for maybe fifteen minutes, tops. She really was his soul mate, as he said. What did this mean? Did this mean he didn’t love me anymore? That I wouldn’t hurt him anymore by choosing Edward over him, time and time again? Did this mean we could just be friends, like I always thought it was meant to be? Him imprinting changed everything. I would have to ask him about all this later. Or maybe Edward would know, and I could ask him. How great would it be if we could be normal friends, although I knew nothing about us would ever be normal. But still. This imprinting thing was great. Or it would be if Karen would just accept it and give it a try. She’d better not hurt him, too. How much more torment could Jacob take?

Apparently she saw what she was doing to him, too, because she said “No, wait. You’re serious about this whole imprinting soul mate thing?”

“Yeah, of course I am. I wouldn’t lie to you.”

“Ugh you have got to stop all that gooey ‘If it makes you happy’ and ‘I wouldn’t lie to you’ stuff if this is going to work out. It’s making me sick.”

“What are you saying?” he asked her.

“I’m saying I’ll give it a try. What can it hurt? I’ll finally have a boyfriend after fifty-seven years.”

Those words created a huge smile to form on Jacob’s face. I forgot how much I loved seeing him smile, but it wasn’t my smile, nor Sam’s bitter smile. It looked like a whole new smile, one just for Karen. His smile caused her to smile, too.

“That’s good enough for me,” he said.

I rode back to with Edward to his house. Everyone else was going back, too, not counting Karen. She was being driven back to La Push with Jake to get her car. I was worried about this at first when I gave her the keys and apologized for stealing it- she said she wouldn‘t press charges- since vampires weren’t allowed in La Push because of the treaty, but Jake had explained that it was okay because the pack wasn’t allowed to harm anyone a wolf imprinted on. This made me feel better, because I knew that Jake wouldn’t let any harm come to Karen. It showed in the way he looked at her.

“I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you,” I told Edward, feeling bad.

“Don’t be. You had every right to be upset. I know it looked like I was cheating on you.”

“But I should’ve known you wouldn’t do that. I was stupid.”

“No you weren’t.”

“I do have to tell you something, though,” I told him. I had to admit to cheating on him, too. Even if he broke up with me for it, I couldn’t lie to him about it.

“What’s that?” he asked.

“I cheated on you,” I said, looking at my hands. Would he forgive me?

“I wouldn’t really call what you did ‘cheating’, Bella. He’s the one who kissed you,” he said.

“But I kissed him back. Even if it was for only a few seconds, I still cheated on you,” I confessed. Then I really processed what he had said. “Wait. You knew?” I asked, looking up at him now.

“Jake was thinking about it when he accused me of cheating on you. Everyone else was thinking about it, too ,” he told me.

“Everyone else? How did they know?”

“Karen can see into peoples’ pasts. She was keeping tabs on you when you were in La Push,” he said a little guiltily.

“Great. Now everyone knows I cheated on you.” I threw my head back against the seat.

“Like I said, I don’t count that as cheating. I blame it all on him. He took you off guard. If I didn’t know that he would never try something like that again with you, I would probably be planning on ways to kill him right now.”

“Edward!” I scolded him. “That reminds me,” I said, thinking of why he would never try something like that again. “Does that mean he doesn’t love me anymore? We can just be normal friends now?”

“He does still love you, Bella, but in a way I like more, as a friend. He isn’t in love with you, no. You can just be friends now,” he said. “He’s all for Karen, now.”

“Thank God.” I sighed in relief. Finally I could get our relationship how I’ve always wanted it to be.

When we got back to his house, I finally became aware of the time.

“You have to go,” Edward guessed when he saw me checking my watch.

“Yes. Charlie will be getting worried.”

“Plus you need dinner,” he guessed again. It was true, and my stomach confirmed it by growling. We laughed.

“Bye.” I stretched up to kiss him. He kissed me back, and it felt good to know again that he was all mine.

“I’ll see you in a few hours,” he said.

Then I got into my truck and drove home.

“Bella? Is that you?” Charlie called from the couch.

“Yes,” I called back.

“I was beginning to get worried. It’s late,” he said when I found him in the living room watching a football game. “You were over there a long time.” He didn’t sound very happy about that.

“There was a lot going on over there. Is there any pizza left over? I’m starved,” I asked.

“It’s on the table,” he said as I headed for the kitchen.

After I ate I headed upstairs to my room. I got ready for bed and laid down to wait for Edward. While I waited I thought over the day’s events. How different everything would be now. Luckily, it would be different in a good way.
