I saw the bear coming around the corner and tried to think fast, but that wasn’t one of my most prominent traits. Before I knew it, he attacked. The claws tearing into me hurt like hell. He just kept pawing at me. I could feel unconsciousness coming. This was it. I was about to die. All of the sudden the pressure of the bear was gone. I looked around with what little strength I had left and saw the most beautiful woman I’d ever laid eyes on. Then I passed out.
I told myself over and over to ignore the blood, but it was everywhere. Holding my breath, I picked him up and ran. I would have left him there, but his hair reminded me of another time. A time that was only a few years behind me but still seemed centuries ago. I considered biting him myself. It wouldn’t work, not to save him. I wasn’t strong enough for that. I would take him to Carlisle.
I was sitting at the piano working on a composition when I heard Rosalie calling to me with her thoughts.
Edward, I’m bringing an injured human. I found him when I was hunting. He was attacked by a bear. I couldn’t leave him. Please tell Carlisle to be ready.
I relayed the message. We cleared a spot for her to put him, finishing just as she rushed into the house. I listened to what was going on from outside. There was too much blood in the house for me to stay. Carlisle quickly assessed that he would have to be changed in order to live, if you could really call this living. Rosalie tried asking him what his name was, but he couldn’t talk. I heard it in his thoughts.
“His name is Emmett,” I said from outside. I knew they would hear me. I got control of myself and went back in the house.
Being out of it was way better than whatever this was supposed to be. Was I in Hell? It sure felt like it. I could see every thing around me and none of it was flames. I saw the blonde again. As I looked at her I found myself unable to decide which was hotter; her or the flames burning through my body. I saw a man with his arms around some other woman. They were all three watching me. I would have guessed that the gorgeous blonde was their daughter, but there was no way they were old enough to have kids any older than five. She had to be at least eighteen. I heard a door open. Another man walked in. He put his hand on the blonde’s shoulder. Damn, she was taken!
Damn it! I’m practically dying and I still can’t catch a break. Why does she have to have a boyfriend? Worse, he could be her fiancée or husband.
I laughed a little bit. They all looked at me questioningly.
“Don’t worry, big guy, she’s single. I lived here first. Rosalie was found about ten years after me. Carlisle has a soft spot for people inches from death.”
“What are you talking about? Why were you laughing?” Esme asked. Rosalie was looking at me as if I were insane.
“His thoughts were funny. He saw me and assumed that Rose and I were together. I was merely assuring him that we aren’t. The poor guy sounded pretty upset about the prospect, and I’ve got to say the thought makes me sad, too. I don’t think I could handle someone so self-centered.”
If I live through this I’m going to kick your ass. That’s no way to talk to a lady; especially a lady that beautiful.
If he weren’t in the middle of the transformation from human to vampire, that threat wouldn’t have bothered me. But he was about to be a newborn vampire and from the size of his arms he was strong for a human. I decided to make peace.
“You will live- in a sense. The fire you feel will fade in a couple of days, and then you’ll wake up a whole new being. By the way, Rose and I say stuff about each other all the time. I call her self-centered, and then she calls me a nosy little brat. I can see how she gets the nosy part, but I don’t get where ‘brat’ came from. In case you were wondering, I’m considered nosy because I can hear what people are thinking. I’ll leave it up to Carlisle to explain all of this. I’m going to go for a run. I could use the fresh air. I’ll talk to you later, Emmett.”
I turned and walked out the door.
It bothered me to hear Emmett scream. I didn’t know how long we sat there and told him what he was becoming. I hated myself for it. Why should he be forced to live like this? After a while he was able to speak without screaming.
“Am I supposed to feel like someone dropped me straight into the fires of Hell?”
I was shocked when I heard his voice.
“Something like that; it should be over in a few hours,” I said. I stared into his eyes as we spoke. What used to be a deep blue had become a dark purple that was well on its way to being a vivid red. He smiled and I couldn’t help but laugh.
“What’s so funny?” He asked teasingly.
“I don’t think anyone has ever smiled while going through the transformation before,” I explained. He winced suddenly, displacing some of his wavy hair. I reached over to brush it back into place.
“With such a beautiful lady watching over me, how could I not smile? You remind me of what I always imagined an angel would look like. If it weren’t for the mind reader and the burning feeling in my veins, I could’ve sworn that I’d died and went to Heaven.” His eyes closed for a few seconds only to snap back open again. I could tell that he was trying very hard not to scream by the way his lips were pressed together. He just lay on the bed, writhing and thrashing in pain.
“Carlisle,” I yelled. Edward and Esme flew into the room with Carlisle close behind them. Carlisle examined Emmett quickly, assessing whether anything was wrong.
“It’s almost over. This is the final few minutes of the change. I’m sure you remember how everything focused to a point towards the very end. It should only be a few more minutes at the most.” Carlisle watched Emmett. When his eyes opened, he looked around.
“Wow!” he said when he eyes fell on me. I stared into them, ignoring the fact that they were red. “You’re more beautiful than I thought. I feel like I haven’t had a drink in weeks.” He touched his throat, and then seemed to notice his skin. Edward laughed a little bit. Whatever Emmett was thinking must be amusing.
“Yes it is, as matter of fact. I do feel a little guilty for hearing it though. Oh, and thoroughly disgusted. Please do me a favor, Emmett, and try to censor your thoughts. It makes existing together peacefully much easier.”
“Get out of my head, and you won’t have to worry about what I’m thinking.”
“Boys, you can argue later. We should hunt,” Esme said in a maternal voice.
“I hunted yesterday. May I stay here and work on a composition? The tune has been in my head for weeks, but I just can’t make it work. It’s driving me insane.”
Carlisle looked at Emmett. I guessed that he was trying to decide whether we really needed Edward. “I guess,” Carlisle said.
“Thank you! I can tell already that I’m going to have trouble with these two. Rose, do my sanity a favor and wear a turtle-neck shirt, please. His thoughts are seriously disturbing,” Edward said as he walked to the piano. He sat down. I looked at Emmett and caught him staring at me. He smiled innocently. I smiled back and directed a go-to-hell thought at Edward. He shook his head, smiling.
“I’m already there.” He began to play.
