Edward’s PoV

She was remarkable.

And she was mine.

I grabbed Bella’s hand, and brought it to my lips when she answered the door on the day of our first date. I was rewarded with a delightfully anxious laugh, and I pulled her to my side as I voiced a hello to her father. He smiled largely, waving at me from the couch in the living room. I laughed and said goodbye, leading my girlfriend by the hand to the car.

Her lengthy legs were barely encased in some tauntingly undersized shorts (she was obviously taking advantage of the relatively warm day), and she had on a light yellow hoodie (I said relatively). Although her hair was shiny and her skin radiant, her eyes were slightly tempestuous. I didn’t say a word concerning her look, but I kept it in the forefront of my mind.

It was a Saturday morning, a little less than two weeks after I had asked Bella to be my girlfriend. I wanted to do something special and unique for our earliest alone time and it called for a bright and clear day. The original date was the Saturday prior to this one, but the rainy town of Forks stayed true to its nature. Instead we cuddled up on the sofa with our group of friends.

The rest of our time spent together was either at school or in the close company of our friends and family. Finally this day arrived, and I was taking her to my meadow.

More of a bright, open field than a meadow, it was almost as beautiful as my darling. Trees surrounded the clearing, and my favorite flowers, freesia, were scattered everywhere.

The meadow was quite out of reach, so we had to hike for a long ways. I helped Bella, ever so clumsy, over numerous branches and fallen trees. After a few hours of sweat and tripping, Bella and I at last made it to my favorite place in the world.

I gently took her hand, and tethered her to my side with my arm. As we entered the clearing, I was graced with an exquisite gasp.

“Oh, Edward, it’s lovely!” Her expression cleared for a moment, being replaced with a small smile. Her eyes were bright and shining, and for the first time, I noticed that she had two slight dimples around her mouth.

“It’s okay. You, on the other hand…” I spun her around to face me. “…are stunning.”

She blushed darkly, squeezing my fingers tenderly. I used my free hand to tilt her chin up towards me. Her wide-eyed expression caught me off guard, and I found myself pulling her to my chest. “I’m really glad I found you, beautiful.”

“Edward…” Her voice was thick and throaty.

“Yes, love?”

Her eyes started to glisten, and I frowned in worry. “Bella, sweetheart, what’s wrong?”

She shook her head, pressing her lips together. Gathering her head to my chest, I kissed the top of her head. “Bells, I’m always here for you.”

“I know, Edward. I know.” We stood like that for a little bit, just embracing.

After a few moments, Bella pulled back a little, and wiped the tears that were still gathering in her eyes. “Really, I’m fine, Edward.”

“No, you’re not, Bella. I care a lot about you, and I want to know what’s wrong.”

“It’s no big deal.”

I squatted down a few inches so we were eye to eye. “Bella, anything that makes you feel upset is a big deal to me.”

She chuckled a little bit, but she still wasn’t smiling. “Okay, Edward.”

I wrapped my arm around her waist, pulling her to a large tree that I frequently leaned against. I slid down so I was sitting with my legs straight out in front of me, my back braced against the tree. Bella stood awkwardly to the side of me, until I reached out to her. “Sit with me?” I pulled on her hands lightly.

She pouted and buckled her legs. Soon, due to my persistence, she sat curled up in my lap, head in the crook of my neck. “Now sweetheart, tell me what’s going on.”

“Well, I was in the locker room before gym, right after you had left. I overheard Lauren talking to Jessica.”

This didn’t sound good. Lauren Mallory was, to put it bluntly, a cold-hearted bitch, and would say anything to boost her popularity. I couldn’t imagine what she had said to make Bella dismayed. I stroked her hair a bit, not pressing her to say anything before she wanted to.

“And she was saying that I didn’t deserve you. That I wasn’t willing to do everything with you, even though you would want someone who was.”

I was silent for a moment, mulling over what she said, though quickly anger boiled inside of me. “Bella! Why would you ever believe that? If anything, I don’t deserve you. You are a beautiful, appealing woman; no matter how much you are willing to ‘do’ with me.” I couldn't understand how she believed all I wanted was sex. Even if the chance was offered to me, I don't think I could ever ruin the pureness that Bella had by taking that from her.

She raised her eyebrows mournfully at me. “So you don’t care that I’m not exactly going to jump into bed with you?”

“Of course not. Why would I have asked you to be my girlfriend when I knew you weren’t that type of girl?”

Bella shrugged, and I couldn’t help but to pull her even closer to me. “You’re infuriating, you know?” The beautiful girl thought that I didn't want her for anything but her body. When she finally cracked a gentle smile, I knew she was feeling better.

We sat for a while, softly whispering to each other, as well as watching birds fly in the air above. At one moment, Bella saw a particularly colorful bird fly by; she turned her head to the sky to get a better look. Her eyes were large and wondrous, and her mouth was slightly parted. She reminded me of the innocence of childhood, but she was certainly not a young girl. My emotions got the better of me, so I used my hand to pull her face back to me.

Pressing my forehead to hers, I wrapped my arms around her waist. “Bella, dear?”

“Edward, dear.” A smirk graced her lips. I loved this. How she was so comfortable around me. Usually, people wanted to be my friend, but they were intimidated.

I braced my mind, and slowly spoke, deliberately making sure every word was enunciated. “I believe... I’d like to try something.”

Something in her wonderfully communicative eyes flashed, but she blinked and they cleared. “Are you asking my permission?”

“Naturally.”

“Permission granted.”

“I’d like to say something. No matter how busy and complicated my life has been and will become in the future, you’re always in my mind. Whether in the forefront or on a back burner, you’re always here, Bell.” I tapped my forehead to stress my point. “Even when we weren’t on… great terms. You’re very special to me.” That was quite an understatement.

She smiled tinily, and I continued. “Did I mention your beauty?”

Bella laughed loudly, catching me off guard. “Stop right there, mister!”

I rubbed my nose against her cheek, whining, “Please, sweetheart? I want to tell you why I wanted to be yours.” I made sure to say that I wanted to be hers, not the other way around.

She grumbled acceptance. “Fine.”

“Now where was I? Ah. Your beauty.”

A snort came from her nose.

“Let me do this, Bells,” I murmured, determined to speak my mind without comments from the peanut gallery.

She fell silent, and I persisted. “You’re so pretty, Bella. That doesn’t begin to describe it. You’re real. You don’t hide behind makeup miles high, or hair shit. You’re beautiful, for lack of better terms.” Really, I had no accurate words to describe her. She certainly was beautiful by common standards, and I loved that. Bella wasn't tan and blonde. She was pale, and had exotic features, and her every move intrigued me.

Bella giggled, and I knew I was getting somewhere. “And I’m not just with you for your looks Bella. You’re intelligent, and hard-working, you’re clever, funny, quiet, and clumsy. And I love that about you.” I tried to spit the word love out quickly, not sure of how she would handle it.

I placed my hands on her cheeks, bringing her face about a half inch closer. “You see how much I care about you?” It was hard not to lean in and kiss her. Despite my urges, I furiously told myself that if i waited for the right moment, it would be so much better.

She nodded, and I released her face. We both fell back around the tree, my arm situated on her lower back. My fingers found the way to her hair, and I gently caressed it with my fingers. My efforts were rewarded when he leaned against my hand slightly, and snuggled closer. After lying still for quite a while, she sighed angrily, and turned towards me.

“Yes, love?”

She exhaled noisily again, and just shrugged.

I turned towards her slightly. “Bells, what’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong with you, Edward?”

I leaned back, bewildered. Had I irritated her? “What?”

“Here we are, along for the first time since you asked me out. You just told me how much you care about me, and how beautiful and smart I am. I’m not completely, innocent, you know!”

I placed my hand on her arm, trying to calm her down. “Bella, settle down.”

“No, Edward! I will not settle down.” She got up to her knees, throwing one over my lap. She ended up straddling my knees, her arms around my neck. “I told myself that I would let you initiate. I would let you have the reins. But I’m tired of waiting, Edward!”

Her hair was falling forward as she tilted her face down. Bella leaned in to place her lips on my cheek, and she slowly dragged them across to the bridge of my nose.

“Bella, please, stop." I sat up slightly, which pushed her back to sit on my thighs. Gripping her legs, I pushed her back further until her arms around my neck were holding her only partially upright. After my fingers brushed her hair out of her face, I looked sadly down at her. "You have no idea how hard it is not to kiss you right now."

"Well, why don't you kiss me then?"

"Because you're mad at me. I don't want our first kiss to be angry, or rushed. I want to take it slow, and really show you how much I want it. Not just because we got tired of waiting. I want it to mean something." I couldn't do this now. Not in these circumstances.

"Okay, Edward."

"Do you understand that I want this as much as you do?"

She nodded quickly. "Edward, I won't push you."

"Thank you, sweetheart. Thank you so much." Bella had no idea how grateful I was to her. I pulled her to me, wrapping my arms around her and pressing my lips to her cheek. Slowly, I stood up, pulling Bella with me.

“Bella?”

“Mmhmm?”

“I think I'm ready. Would it be okay if I kissed you now?”

She nodded, biting her lip. I released my grip on her waist so I could softly pry her lips out from in between her teeth. Once her bottom lip was freed, I delicately pressed my mouth to hers.

I was prepared in no way for how it would feel. Known to only me, Bella, and my sister, this was my first kiss. Bella’s lips moved softly in a way that I couldn’t adequately describe. Her mouth was slightly parted, and her sweet tasting breathe was heavenly. It felt like a quick burning fire was started in the pit of my stomach. When I started to suck her lower lip into my mouth, she whimpered slightly.

Out of the blue, she gasped, and threw herself on top of me. Her lips greedily pulled at mine, and I wrapped my arms around her small waist. I tried to stifle a chuckle, but she pulled back a little as a result.

“What?”

I grinned, and kissed her lightly on the lips for the second time. “You’re so adorable, sweetheart.”

She scrunched up her nose. “I know.”

I laughed loudly, hugging her tightly to my upper body. “Wow.”

“Wow doesn’t even begin to describe it, Edward.”

I chuckled, lifting her around so her back was facing my chest. She nestled closer to me, and I placed my hands on her hip bones, my favorite spot on her body to grasp. I positioned my chin on her shoulder; then pressed my lips to the spot below her ear.

“Edward!”

“What, sweetheart?” I was pulling the complete bullshit card. I knew that the spot below her ear was extremely sensitive.

“That tickles.”

“I’m sorry, honey.” Despite her complaints, I casually flicked out my tongue to taste her.

My taste buds were assaulted with a sweet, berry flavor, and a groan flew from my closed lips.

“Ungh. Nevermind, Edward.”

I laughed softly, clasping my hands on her stomach. Her breathing was slow and methodic; however, the pulse in her neck was swift. I concluded that she must be trying to slow down her heartbeat by using even breaths. As a test, my hands moved down to her hips, and her inhalation became slower. In contrast, her heart rate was steadily increasing.

“Bella, dear, are you trying to calm yourself down?”

Her voice caught as she responded. “No…”

I sniggered, running my nose along her jawline. “Wrong answer, Bell.”

She was in the middle of questioning my response when I tenderly deposited her on the ground. The look of her lying on the ground with her hair fanning out around her head was devastatingly reminiscent of my daydreams. Just like in my fantasies, I climbed on top of her, supporting my weight with my forearms underneath her shoulder, and my knees just on the inside of her thighs.

Her bright brown eyes looked up at me in earnest, and she reached out to push my hair from my eyes. I was hyperaware of her fingers brushing my forehead, trailing down my cheek, and onto the back of my neck to tangle in the wispy hair lying there.

“Mmm… Bella, that feels amazing. You feel amazing.”

I was simply stating the facts that were running through my mind, but Bella muttered, “How the hell do you come up with this stuff, Edward? I mean, do you have lists of things to say and do that make girls squirm?”

I started to get off of her. “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, precious.”

To my surprise, her thin arms clenched around my back. “Nuh-uh, Romeo. You are staying right there.” Her knees clamped together around my thighs, and she pulled me to her. “In no way did you make me uncomfortable. This already has been the best day of my life. Don’t ruin this for me.”

Laughing I leaned down to chastely press my lips to hers. That makes three. “Best day of your life, huh?”

“Well, the day a certain someone asked me out is a close second.”

“A certain someone?”

“Yup.”

“Who exactly is this certain someone?”

“Mike Newton.”

Pulling back, I raised both eyebrows.

“Kidding, kidding. You, of course.”

“Good.”

“You know, he’s been giving me a horrible case of stink eye ever since we’ve been together. Coincidence? I think not. I believe he’s mad at me for stealing the object of his affection.”

I pouted. “He has a crush on you, you know.”

She snorted.

“No, seriously, Bell. He told me in the locker room once.”

“I doubt this.”

“Bella. Really, you have no idea how beautiful you are. I don’t deserve you.”

“Really, Edward? You want to talk about misconceptions? You are the most popular guy in school, and you go for me. You are smart, and funny, and eloquent, and damn it, Edward, you make me want to go hump a tree or something.”

I laughed at her speech. “I make you want to hump a tree?”

She pouted, sticking out her bottom lip. “Yes.”

“Well, Bella, if you wanted to hump a large, tall, stick, you could’ve asked me for assistance.”

My crude joke made my Bella splutter. “What?”

“Relax, Bells. I was just joking.” I leaned down to whisper into her ear. “You wouldn’t have needed to ask, gorgeous.”

She slapped my arm. “Cool it, Casanova.”

A scoff found its way out of my mouth. “I’m no Casanova.”

“Really?” She wiggled tantalizingly.

“Positively. By definition, a Casanova is a seducer of women who moves from one careless relationship to the next in quick succession. I only want you, love.”

Bella pulled me closer to her. I responded by leaning down to kiss her for the fourth time. This occasion, the kiss went deeper, and I felt a small, pointed tongue flick out to touch my lips. Bella moaned underneath me (I tried to shake off the insinuations of that phrase). I kept my mouth closed, trying not to move too quickly, but I pressed down on her further, feeling her delectable heat below me.

I hauled myself away before we could go further, and I pressed my cheek to hers. After sitting up, I pulled her to me. “God.”

She giggled. “No need to address me by my formal name. Bella is just fine.”

I growled jokingly, kissing her close-mouthed on her lips. Five.

Another growl came from her, but it was from her stomach. “Aw, Bells, you’re hungry. I brought some food.” A gesture to the picnic basket on the far side of the meadow, where we entered.

I jogged over to get it, and brought it back to the middle of the clearing. Bella stood awkwardly to the side, watching my arms and back as I spread the blanket across the ground. I weighted the stereotypical red and white checkered tablecloth down with the basket. Plopping down and patting the space next to me, I invited Bella to sit close to me, and grabbed a cold water bottle, handing it to her.

Bella delicately folded her legs as she sank to the ground, and we sat like that for a while, snacking on grapes and some crackers. After a while, we shifted into a more comfortable position. We ended up facing each other while lying on our stomachs.

I fed her a few more grapes, relishing in the way her full lips closed around the fruit. I smiled gently at her, and offered her some of the food Esme made for us. She sat up, and I rolled onto my back, staring up at her. She narrowed her eyes against the fading sun as she pulled my head tenderly into her lap, making me realize that we had spent more than a few minutes here.

“It’s in the red Tupperware, sweetie.” She reached for the picnic basket, which was about a yard away. She could reach it with the tips of her fingers, but not without stretching. I paused before going to her aid, delighting in the small span of skin showing between her jean shorts and hoodie.

Bella grabbed the correct food container out of the bin, and opened it to reveal some of my mom’s signature tossed spinach salad with still warm grilled chicken. My girlfriend grabbed a plate, putting enough on it for two. I raised my head from her lap, kissing her neck as I turned around.

She laughed freely and lightly. “Stop distracting me, Edward!”

“Eh. Fine.” I crossed my legs, sitting across from her. I took two forks from the basket, and handed one to her. “Eat up, my dear.”

She giggled slightly, and took a bite of the already sliced chicken. I silently thanked my mom for thinking ahead; Bella and knives were not a good mix.

I took a slight mouthful of food, and suddenly I was ravenous. I hadn’t been eating a lot lately, due to my occupied thoughts. It was finally catching up to me. In no time, I had eaten my fair share of salad and chicken, and was enviously eying my beloved's portion.

Bella just raised her eyebrow at me, and stabbed another forkful of food. Instead of watching her bring it to her own mouth, like I expected, she brought it to mine.

In shock, I swallowed the food that Bella fed me. After gulping it down, I looked at her incredulously. “You amaze me, Bell.”

She laughed. “Eat! You were eyeing the plate like you hadn’t eaten in days.”

“Mmm. I’m not that hungry anymore.” I leaned over the plate to kiss her lightly. She chuckled into my mouth, and ran her hair lightly through my hair.

Following our sixth kiss, I packed up the picnic basket as the sky began turning a horrid shade of charcoal.

“We should get going, Bells.”

She too looked to the sky, and nodded in agreement, but scrunched up her nose.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

“I don’t want to walk back.”

“Oh, honey, that’s okay. I can carry you.”

She laughed. “I’m heavier than your average backpack.”

“Well, Bella, I’m very strong.” I waved a bicep in her face.

She laughed loudly, swatting me away. “Oh, I cower in fear, Mr. Cullen.”

“Never, Miss Swan.” I pulled her into a gentle hug, swaying my hips slightly.

She wiggled out of my grasp. “C’mon, lover boy. We’re going to be poured on momentarily.”

I led her to the edge of the clearing, when she stopped me. “Edward, we can’t just leave the picnic basket.”

“Bella, I come here at least once a week. It’ll stay dry where I put it.”

“Mmmkay, if you’re sure.”

“I’m positive. Now get on.” I squatted down slightly, allowed her to climb onto my back. She wrapped her long legs around me, squeezing my waist gently, and I gripped the bottom of her thighs to keep her upright.

Now, I guess I could have placed my hands a bit lower, more on the back of her knees than the underside of her thighs.

I guess.

I murmured appreciatively, and took off at a quick walk. The soft melody inspired by the girl on my back crept into my mind; I couldn’t help but hum it quietly.

“What song is that, Edward?”

“It’s untitled.”

“Oh. It’s beautiful. It’s making me sleepy, but in a good way. Like a lullaby.”

I mumbled in agreement, running my thumbs lightly over her bare legs.

She squeaked lightly.

“What, sweetie?”

“Your hands are cold.”

“Oh, I’m sorry.” I chafed my hands along her skin, creating friction to warm both of us up.

“Ya know what, Edward?”

“What?”

“You call me all sorts of pet names, like sweetheart, and Bell, and honey, but I don’t know what to call you. What would you like to be called?”

I thought for a moment. “It’s overused, but I would love to hear you call me baby.”

“Hmm… I don’t like being called it, but I certainly have no aversion to calling you baby.”

“Say it. I want to hear it.”

“Hey, baby, what’s shaking?”

My stomach trembled with laughter. “Seriously, Bells.”

“Alright.” She leaned down to whisper into my ear. “Baby, I love having you carry me around. It makes me feel all warm and tingly inside.”

My voice lowered in pitch significantly. “I love how that sounds, beautiful.”

“I love saying it, babe.”

Some sort of strangled sound came from the back of my throat, making Bella laugh.

“Did you just purr, babe?”

“Um, yes?”

“Mmm. It’s okay. I thought it was cute.”

“Oh, so I’m cute?”

“Adorable.”

“I’m adorable?”

“Hot.”

“I’m hot?”

“Yes, Edward! You are every girl’s most wanted fantasy. Now get over yourself.”

“I’m just joking, sweetheart.”

“I love it when you joke. You seem so happy.”

“I am happy.”

“I’m happy, too, baby. I’m happy, too.”

I carried her for the remainder of the way in silence, which wasn’t all that long. The journey back had taken maybe thirty minutes at most, whereas the initial journey had taken at least two hours.

“We’re back already!”

“Yes, sweetheart, we’re back already.”

“Aw.”

“Why so sad?”

I could see a scrumptious blush appear on her cheeks from the corner of my eye.

“I don’t want to get off you. I feel so safe here.”

“How about this?” I swung her around so she was straddling my waist.

“Now that is even better.”

I tried to remind myself to keep my mouth closed and my tongue away from her sweet tasting mouth. I was actually proud of myself for staying so committed to my cause.

“Babe, I love kissing you,” she mumbled against my lips.

Her words and the use of my name snapped a string in me, and I tried parting her lips with my own. My tongue snaked out of its own accord, which made her groan and grip my waist tighter with her knees. I lapped lightly at her lips, suppliant for entrance. She opened her lips slightly, her own tongue poking out. We met in the middle, where our open mouths still met. The sound that Bella described as purring was produced in the back of my throat at the sheer taste of her.

I unenthusiastically pulled away, breathless, and she giggled. “You taste good, Edward.”

Seven.

“Minty fresh," I teased. "Now c’mon, let’s get you home.” It had started sprinkling overhead while we were slightly preoccupied, and I was anxious to lead her to the car.

After getting in and buckling up, the sky let loose and poured. We laughed at our amazing timing. I started the car, being sure to turn on the heat for my Bella. Her hair was frizzy and wet, a delicious combination.

As I began the short drive to Bella’s house, I took her hand in mine. She chose this opportunity to climb into the middle seat, leaning against me and pressing her lips to my neck.

I smiled and lifted a hand from the wheel to place it around her shoulders. “Bella, sweetheart, you look so beautiful.”

She murmured favorably, whilst continuing her ministrations on the juncture of my neck and shoulder. She pressed her chest deliciously to my side, and I desperately attempted to ignore the feeling of her breasts smushed up against me.

“Babe, if you value your life, you should stop kissing me there.”

“Mmm, nope. Not gonna happen.”

“No complaining here, Bells.”

Her lips and teeth dragged along my neck, reaching up to my ear. Pulling on my earlobe with her lips, she whispered softly. “I changed my mind, Edward.”

I gulped before answering. “About what, sweetheart?”

She bit down gently on the lobe of my ear. “I love it when you call me babe.”

I groaned loudly. "Christ, Bella." Making a rash decision, I roughly jerked the car to the side of the road. Putting the car in park, I unbuckled my seatbelt and slowly laid Bella on her back on the passenger seat. After crawling over her, I smiled devilishly. "You look so good lying underneath me, Bella." I leaned in to suck gently at the base of her neck.

Pressing her forcefully against the leather seats, I kissed along the line of her collarbone, pressing my hips into her. She gasped a bit, but I plowed on, dipping down to press a kiss over her heart.

Undoubtedly, she felt the large erection I was sporting in my pants. “Edward,” she said shakily.

“Babe, do you see what you do to me? We're in the same situation as we were in the meadow. I want this to happen, but not here, and not now. Alright?”

She swallowed down an apparent lump in her throat. “Alright.”

“Thank you.” I planted a wet kiss on her lips, for the eighth time.

I got up off of her slowly, pulling her to the middle seat. After buckling her in, I started the car and took off down the road.

After driving for a solid five minutes, I realized that she was trembling beside me. “Oh, shit, Bella, are you okay? Was I too rough?”

She shook her head unconvincingly.

“Bella, I’m so sorry.” I shimmied away slightly putting necessary distance between us.

“Edward! Come back.” Her long and thin arms pulled me even closer to her. “You did not hurt me. Now I see what you mean. We want this to happen when we're both ready for it. I'll stop teasing you."

I smiled at her smugly. “So you liked it?”

“Rest assured, I loved it.”

I slid closer to her. “Really?”

She nodded gently, rubbing circles onto my upper back. I leaned in to kiss her gently and innocently. Nine.

“Alright, dear sweet Bella. We’re here,” I said while pulling into her driveway.

“Walk me to the door?”

“Of course.”

I quickly turned off the car, and raced quickly around to open her door for her. After weaving her fingers through mine, I walked slowly and methodically to her house, not wanting the day to end.

It was about seven o’clock, and I could smell the scent of pizza through the open kitchen window. The sounds of the game were also heard faintly.

I turned to my beloved, not wanting to open the door and let inside just yet. “Hey, there.”

“Hello.”

I wrapped my arms around her waist. “I had a lot of fun today, sweetheart.”

“Me too.”

“Best first date ever.”

“Best first kiss ever.”

“Agreed.” I leaned in to lightly kiss her. Her hands were slowly stroking my neck, and my fingers were brushing up and down her sides. Becoming a bit more daring, I reached down to grab her right underneath her bottom, lifting her up so she was straddling my waist. My bottom lip, now sucked into her mouth, was nipped lightly with her teeth.

I moaned slightly. "Remember, Bells. Wrong time, wrong place."

"I know."

She released my waist, slithering clumsily to the ground. I set her right side up.

Ten.

We had kissed ten times.

I pulled her closer to me, reluctant to let her go. My hands rested on her lower back, and she put her hands on my chest. Bella was the perfect height; the top of her head was the ideal place for me to rest my chin. Just as she moved her hands to my shoulders, her front door swung open quickly.

Our reactions delayed slightly, we both jumped away from each other, peering up at her father. Slightly embarrassed at being caught in such an intimate position, I blinked repeatedly, trying to make my eyes adjust to the bright light.

"Hello, sir." I politely extended my hand to the familiar man. Although I was on very casual terms with Charlie, I felt like the situation needed some formality.

Mr. Swan simply waved my hand away, reached out to give me a quick manly hug. Before pulling away, he whispered quietly in my ear.

"Take good care of her, boy."

I nodded, my eyes shining slightly. I blinked away my tears at his acceptance, trying to remain some sort of dignity.

"You two say goodbye, I'll be inside."

"Goodnight, Officer Swan."

"Charlie, Edward."

"Have a nice night, Charlie." I smiled largely, running a hand through my hair, using my other one to grab Bella's fingers and weave them through my own.

The door was left slightly ajar, and I turned towards Bell.

"Hey, sweetheart."

She smiled at me. "He's trying really hard to accept the fact that I have a boyfriend. He's gotten adjusted to the idea."

I grinned. "That's great, Bells!" I pulled her gently to me, ecstatic at her father's acceptance.

She grinned as well, but her eyebrows were furrowed. I used one hand to gently smooth them out.

I released her then, already worried about how I was going to go one night without her. After kissing me lightly on the cheek, she stepped onto the threshold of her home. I was waiting for her to shut the door and saying goodbye, but instead, she turned around, leaning against the frame.

Her expression looked torn, like she was trying to decide something.

"Edward?"

I looked up at her, raising my eyebrows.

"I love you."
