“Mom, I think you need to answer a few of my questions.” I sat there on the dusty steps in silence for a few moments. Did I want to tell her the truth, had she already guessed it? The similarities between them were hard to miss. I looked towards her and saw the thin haze that was placed around her, I was so used to it I hardly ever noticed it anymore. I could easily pull the haze towards me and use her power to tell her everything. Though, I figured she deserved to hear me out loud. “Okay Riley, what are your questions?” I asked, deciding I would tell her the truth on everything that she asked. “Did I have a brother, was that boy him?” she whispered. I was shocked. She thought Edward was her brother! My son!?! “No.” was my only reply. I had guessed she probably noticed the obvious similarities between them, but I never could have guessed she would have thought to be his sibling. “Then why do we look so much alike?” she nearly screamed. I didn’t want to tell her because I was embarrassed. He didn’t really want me anymore, how could I tell that to my daughter? I knew I should get over it and tell her the truth; the better part of my brain was telling me to. But I was scared. “Mom, just tell me. Please?” I looked into her wide eyes. I saw the pain and hurt within them. I had taught her growing up to never keep secrets, and now she knows I kept a big secret from her. I wanted to tell her so badly, I hated keeping this from her. “Riley,” I paused, chickened out. What I was about to say would change everything. I felt her soft hand brush the side of my cheek, giving me comfort. “He’s your father.” I let out in a breath. Immediately I felt her stiffen. We had never talked about her father. I had told her that he had passed; which was true in a way. He had passed over me: passed over my heart. He had passed by my life and decided he didn’t want to be in it anymore. “Riley, when I met your father, I was human; however, he was not. We didn’t know he could produce a child, but then he left.” A dry sob escaped my lips. “I loved him so much.” I stopped to look at her, I wanted to see how she was taking all of this new information. Riley looked as if she was about to pass out. All the color that was previously in her face was drained, now looking even more like her father. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sweetheart, I didn’t want you to get hurt like I did. It was after he left when I found out I was pregnant. He never knew about you. That’s why, back at school, I ran away. I don’t know what he’ll say if I tell him.” As I finished telling her I pushed off the steps so I could stand, pulled her up with me, and embraced her in a hug. It was then that a soft breeze blew out of the trees, sending the familiar sent my way. Riley acted faster than I did, quickly jumping from the porch; she was hissing and couching in a defensive stance.
