Notes:
I know, i'm so evil. I left everyone on a total cliffie at the end of the last story. But, i think i'm entitled considering that only two people reviewed. they reviewed more then once but still, two people! That really is pathetic! I need more reviews to fuel my creativity. If i don't on this story i will stop on a cliffie and not update any more.

I woke up. The first thing I saw was Embry's anxious face peering down at me.

"Cadyna? Are you okay?"

"My ribs are broken, but I'm fine other wise" I said, relieved that I could actually say something that made sense.

"You passed out and I dragged you out here to keep you safe. I don't know what's happening out there. It's too quiet" it was quiet. Not just that there was no yelling, no screaming but there was an uneasy stillness in the forest. No birdsong and no animals anywhere. I staggered to my feet, with Embry supporting me.

"I need to know what happened" I walked towards the beach, hesitating as I felt the fear of what we might see the fear of what we wouldn't see. I stumbled out into the open, and found myself surrounded by vampires. Several were holding my family and friends in their arms. There were smoking piles all over the beach. And dead bodies. But if our numbers were diminished there's was decimated. Before they had about fifty thousand, now there was a hundred. I quickly counted our numbers. From sixty nine to thirty four. Wait a second. There were only thirty people being hold hostage, Embry and me. Where was the last one? Then the circle parted and Demetri came in. followed by Alec, who was holding Holly, knife to her throat. Jane was on his other side with Jo.

"So Cadyna. This is how it ends. For you"

"Better to die now, then be forced to live in a world where you do"

"You don't have to die. In my opinion, you have three choices. One, you carry on trying to battle my army and you all die. Two, you surrender and I will let you all survive. Three, you and I fight one to one. If you win, you can kill me. If I win, I get to kill the rest of you and keep a couple of you beside me for ever"

"Better to die a hero then live as a coward" snarled Jasper. I weighed up my options. The chances of us beating them all were slim, to non-existent. But me versus him, one to one.

"Done. I'll fight you" I was staring at Alec. I thought he loved me...then again, I hadn't seen him during the fight.

"Alec" I whispered his name.

"Oh yes. You see, Alec had the right idea. He's on the winning side," I snarled. He smiled...and winked.

"You know, I feel sorry for you. I have three weapons, my mouth, my hands and my sword. You have one. Your teeth because you are walking on all fours as I'm assuming that's your natural fighting form" I hadn't phased yet so I smiled.

"Oh, I have weapons of my own" I phased.

"Ready?" I snarled.
We circled each other. Demetri took a practice swipe but I knew he expected me to dodge that one. I took another mock one. Then he leapt. I rolled out the way. He made a second leap and I jumped, digging my paws into the sand and twisting round to make an attack of my own. I tore off a finger. He snarled and slashed at me with his knife. I dodged and feigned hurt. He moved closer, eager to harm me further. I jumped up and dug my teeth into his leg. He stabbed me with his knife in my jaw but I still clung on. He jabbed me again and my jaw dislodged. Then he kicked me off. I went flying and landed at Alec's feet. Demetri advance towards, me. He threw his knife down. He didn't intend to kill me that was too kind. He would bite me and I would pass out. He would torture me later, and probably some of the other girls too. I phased my hand furthest from him and searched the sand for something sharp. I felt the cold blade of a knife, half buried in the sand. I pulled it out and waited.

One of us would die today.
