I felt as if I was floating, almost like in a dream. I wasn’t totally immersed in the water, just floating. The lake was clear, comforting. I leisurely moved my arms back and forth, and my legs kicked just enough to keep balance throughout my body. I kept my eyes closed, enjoying the comfort of the water. Suddenly I hit the bank around the lake, the sand acting as a cushion on my head. But after a moment the slight push against my skull turned into a throbbing pain. I tried reaching toward it in a attempt to see what was wrong, but my arms were restricted, something was holding them back. At first it seemed as if I was tangled in seaweed, but now it felt like someone was holding me down with their inescapable strength.

I opened my eyes to find myself in a totally different situation than the one in my head. The throbbing pain was still there and someone was holding me down, but I was not in my peaceful lake. At least there was one good thing about waking up, Edward was there. In fact, he was the one holding me down.

“Bella, you’re awake.” His voice was distraught and his brow creased to match his tone. He kneeled on the ground with his arms still holding me down. “I was so worried.” If he could cry, I knew he would. I must have just been on the edge of life if he was this distressed.

“I’m alright, Edward.” I used the best consoling voice I could conjure up. “Can I ask you something?”

“Anything, love.”

“Why are you still holding down my arms?” He chuckled slightly before answering, but it wasn’t sincere. I could tell he was still apprehensive.

“I’m sorry. It was just in case you tried to move around just as you attempted to do when you first woke up. I’ll remove them as long as you promise me that you’ll lie still.”

“I promise.” His arms lifted, only to take my hands, but in a comforting and loving gesture.

“I’m so happy that you’re awake. I-“

“How long have I been asleep?”

“A few days. It’s been unbearable for me to just sit and watch you lie there lifeless.”

“I’m awake now, everything is going to be fine.” But was it? I didn’t know if anything happened while I was passed out. We could have lost somebody. The remorseful look on his face didn’t soothe me anymore, either.

“Everyone’s alright, aren’t they?” He lifted his eyes and offered a small scoff.

“Of course, Bella! Everyone is fine. We took care of James, but the woman got away, we don’t know where she went.” As long as she stayed away from my family, I wouldn’t care. We were all safe now, and that’s all that mattered.

“Are you sure you’re feeling well? The tracker really damaged you pretty well.”

“My head hurts a little, but other than that, I just want to go home, and get back to our normal life.”

“As much as I would love that too, we have to wait a while. And your head will probably hurt until tomorrow. Carlisle took the liberty and patched up your skull, it was a deep cut. You’re very lucky we came in time; you lost a lot of blood. Anymore, and…” He didn’t finish the sentence, and I was glad. I knew too well how he was feeling, and why. A life without him, even in heaven, would be no life at all.

“Why do we have to wait?”

“We traveled a great distance in the small time that we were gone, and we can’t let anyone see you hurt like this.” He gently grazed his finger across the cut on my cheek. The slight pressure caused me no pain at all, if anything it was soothed by his cold touch.

“So when will we go back?”

“In a couple of days. Not too long. Are you comfortable in here?” Besides the aching in my head I was perfectly relaxed and contended in what I remembered as my old bed. It was still large enough to adequately fit my body because any bed in the castle was always king sized, never less, of course.

“Yes. So did you take care of the mess in the ballroom?” I didn’t want to bring this up, but someone was bound to come here every once in a while, and what would they think if they found white fabric and broken glass stained with blood?

“We took care of everything. It looks as if nothing happened.” That comforted me only slightly, mostly because I saw how agonized he looked. James was right when he knew that that would practically kill him from the inside out.

“Well, now that we have the time, I wanted to ask you something.” It was a question that had been prominent in my mind ever since I knew that Edward was a vampire, something that any rational person would want to know about. Since we both wanted a change of subject I thought that this would be a good time to ask him.

“Go ahead.”

“What will happen after we’re married? We can’t just stay and take over the throne, we won’t age.”

“I see your point, but you will still be aging. I can’t take away your soul like that, it’s too precious.”

“So you don’t want to live with me forever?”

“No, of course I do, but your soul is more important to me.”

“Edward, you have already taken my soul, I want to be with you forever. And plus, you can’t tell me that everything will still be the same when I’m older.”

“I will love you no matter how old you are, and in truth I am already much older than you.”

“Please, Edward. You need to understand how you would feel on my side of this. situation” I needed to be by his side, there was no doubt about it.

“We will end up having to leave if we’re married, but we shouldn’t worry about that now. Let’s just enjoy the time we have with each other right now.”

“You can’t always avoid the subject. And you said if. I thought it was already decided that we would marry each other, I need you to always be with me, Edward.” Usually I wouldn’t say something like that out loud, but I was desperate for him to always be by my side, and I knew he felt the same about me. At least I thought he did. From what he had just said, I couldn’t tell anymore, it was almost as if he was fading away.

“Bella, I will always love you, and I will stay with you as long as it is the best thing for you.”

“No, Edward!” he was a vampire, it would never be entirely safe for him to be with me, “You can’t say things like that!”

My breath was becoming staggered and my thought jumbled.

“What happened, it opened my eyes. I’m essentially selfish, but I can’t stand to see you hurt like this anymore.”

I couldn’t look at him, hearing those words hurt me, and I don’t think that I could even hold my head up if I saw his face.

“Bella, please don’t ignore me. I love you so much.” I looked into his smoldering eyes, his face nearly inches from mine.

“Then don’t leave me.” I pleaded.

“Where else am I going to go?”

“Nowhere, I won’t ever let you go.” I was decided, he wouldn’t be able to stay away from me, and I wouldn’t be able to stay away from him. We were two necessary pieces of a puzzle; nothing would cause me to let him go away.
