It had only been a day without Edward. The day before had been the only day I had been with Edward, but it seemed like a lot longer. The separation was killing me. I have been walking all day like a zombie, wishing he would just come back. I felt vulnerable and empty without him, especially thinking about what happened with James. He could be here at any given moment without Edward to protect me, but he wouldn't leave without thinking of that, and James wouldn't waltz in here in front of everyone. Yet again, he was a vampire.

My mind starting going to places I rather wouldn't, so I tried to think of last night before Edward left. Going back even further I thought of Charlie's reaction to me finding the man I wanted to spend my eternity with, not just a lifetime. He had been relatively calm, something not very common. I guess he just wanted what was best for me. I knew he loved me, and I loved him. This was just his way of expressing his love.

My sulking steps brought me outside and I continued walking, for once not caring what everyone else thought of what I looked like. After several steps I bumped into Jacob Black.

"I'm so sorry. Oh," he turned and saw it was me, "Bella!" He bowed now turning away from one of the guards he was speaking to.

"Jacob!" I tried sounding as happy as he was, but I just wasn't.

"I hope I didn't hurt the heir to the crown." He looked at me with a teasing smile, his head cocked to the side like a confused dog.

"No. Not at all."

"Did you want to speak to me?" Maybe he was confused.

"Well, not specifically. I was just walking around, bumping into you was an accident, but we can talk anyway."

"Excuse me gentlemen." He nodded his head at the men as a dismissal. "So, where should we go?" Speaking to me now.

"I was just walking around before, so around?" He laughed.

"Around it is." It was silent for a moment until he spoke up. I truly wasn't in the mood for chatting, but I didn't want to be rude. "So anything exciting happen in the past day?"

I didn't really want to tell him that I was getting married to a vampire, and that another one that wanted to marry me was hunting me down because he was also a prince, so I spared him the details. "I think I'm getting married."

"To who?" His eyebrows pulled together, making a frown to match his mouth-set. I hesitated to say his name.

"Edward Cullen." I didn't want to look at his face now. If he believed in the smallest bit of his family's story, he wouldn't like this.

"Why aren't you with him?"

"He's with his family on...vacation for the week." I couldn't really tell him that Edward was hunting for blood.

"Oh." He sounded disappointed. Maybe I layed it on a little too thick with the flirting the other day. Was it really two days ago?

I didn't know what to say to him, and I couldn't comfort him anyway, I already needed my own comfort back.

"Bella, I..." He hesitated, "I don't think he's the best thing for you. He looks at you like you're something to eat."

"When did you ever see us together?" I didn't recall him being with us anywhere.

"When you talked just outside the castle, I was the one who told my father he was here." He looked at me and saw the frustrated expression on my face, immediately reacting, "Not on purpose, Bella. I just saw you with someone and asked my dad if he knew the guy. Apparently he did. Oh that reminds me, too. He said, and I quote. 'We'll be watching'."

"Hmm. I sure he's going to try and convince Charlie he's not the best person for me?"

"No, of course not. He just won't accept it."

"Like you?" His eyes went back down to our slowly moving feet.

"I just..."

"You can say it Jacob." I didn't really know what he was going to say, but I wanted him to spit it out.

"I love you too much."

"What?" That was definitely not expected.

"I know you don't love me back, but I don't want to see you get hurt."

"He won't hurt me Jake." I looked into his eyes, unmoving. "And I do love you, as a brother. We're just not supposed to be together, you'll find your soul mate and be just as happy as me."

"I highly doubt it. And you don't even look that happy to me."

"That's because I'm not with him, but you have made me slightly happier, you must have not seen me before I bumped into you." He truly did make me happy. The pain in my heart wasn't all the way gone, but I wasn't gasping for air, or trying to hold my chest together with my arm like I was last night.

"That makes me slightly happier, too."

"Good, but I don't think that will last very long."

"And why's that?"

"The wedding will be announced at the end of the month, but it will take place a week after." I waited for the volcano to erupt, but it didn't.

"I guess there's nothing I can do to prevent that then, can I?"

"Not really."

"Then I guess I'll see you later Bella." He turned and just walked away, leaving an even bigger hole than before. I didn't have my Edward, and I had broken Jake's heart, the only person that really made me happy without Edward around. His happiness had radiated off of his skin, it was almost like heat, the heat of the sun. The same with his smile, it made me want to smile, but now that want was gone, and so was he. Nothing left but emptiness.
