I sighed. I had been lying awake for an hour now. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t just get to sleep. I got up and put on a dress. I had no idea where I was going but my feet felt like someone was controlling them. I walked down the corridors and knocked on a door. I couldn’t remember whose door it was. It sounded like someone was pacing up and down behind the door and when they heard the knock they hurried over. The door opened and I was swept into a bone-breaking hug. When the person released me, I looked up and saw who it was. It was Josef.

“Kat. I’m sorry; I should have told you sooner. I wanted to get to know you properly and I was worried if I told you, you wouldn’t want to know me. I’m really sorry”

“Well, I’m not”

“What?” he asked perplexed.

“If you had told me, I would have never have gone off in a huff with you yesterday and I wouldn’t have been here right now for you to explain” or give me a big hug I thought.

“Yeah well. Actually, that is a good thing. Because…I like you Kat. You’re different from the vampire girls I’ve met. And all the human girls. I want to get to know you more then ever now”

“I want to get to know you but every time I ask you something I feel like you’re hiding from me,” I said.

Josef’s point of view

If only she knew how much I was hiding from her. I wished I could just tell her the truth about why she was here. It would be so easy to let something slip. I wasn’t going to tell her about the instructions Aro had given me. Or the grilling he’d given me when he’d found out that she had survived. That was before he’d worked out that he could use her. Then he was incredibly happy that she was alive, even though I knew that he’d prefer it if there was no risk, that she was dead. Her unintentional involvement in the prophecy meant that she was a threat and in danger. And it meant, I couldn’t be with her. If I did, it would endanger both our lives. I hoped that Aro would leave her alone.

“I will never hide anything from you again,” I said. That was a promise already broken.

“Thanks Josef”

“You never told me, what were you doing prowling the corridors at night”

“I wasn’t prowling. I just couldn’t sleep. I’m surprised you were awake too,” she said.

“I sleep during the day normally, as the sun’s harmful for my type of vampire”

“But recently you’ve been awake during the day. You’re not a machine, you need to sleep” she was concerned about my well-being? I sighed, quietly.

“I’ll be fine,” I told her, smiling. I noticed her eyes seemed to be filled with tears.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know how to do this! To cope! I was stuck in the facility for years, but I never dreamed…”
“What, Kat? What?”

“I know stuff is being kept from me. I just want to know why I’m here. Why me? I just wish…I wish so much” I hugged her, trying to stop her tears.

“I wish stuff too” I wish we could be together. I wish I could tell you the truth.

“I wish I still had my family. I wish…,” she stuttered off. I could see in her eyes what she wished. Or maybe, it was just my ego running away from me. I put a hand on her face.

“I’ll look after you. I promise”
