Eventually, Josef had to leave. When he was gone, I immediately went and had a shower to wash away his scent and to clean my cut. I had been that close...oh well, better not to dwell in the past. It was hard to believe that Josef had been watching me for SIX years! I mean, come off it. I came out of the shower and instantly had an uneasy feeling. It was quiet...what was going on?

Josef's point of view.

I headed back to my room and paused outside a door.

"Aro! You have to! If he does, then it will bring about the end of our existence"

"Caius, the girl is no threat today"

"But what if she learns of the prophecy?"

"Who would teach her that?"

"Josef" I snarled quietly as Edward spoke.

"Josef! You already have a careful eye on him. We need no further surveillance"

"But..."

"And we need no more incidents like this morning. Edward. Do you understand?"

"Yes Aro" I smiled. He sounded like a sulky teenager. I knew there was nothing I could do, so I headed down the corridors.

Over the next day, we didn't manage to meet each other. But something else was wrong. There was an underlying tension all around the castle. I was hesitant with each step I took. One wrong move could end me.

That night, the night before her birthday, I was woken by sounds of a scuffle. I climbed out of my freezer and headed down the corridors. Edward was carrying an unconscious Kat in his arms. There was a procession of vampires in front of him and behind.

"The time has come! Katherine Turner, the last of the ancient line will lead us into a glorious new age!" called Aro, who was at the front of the procession. More vampires joined and I attached myself to the line. We headed into the large stone chamber. Aro sat in the middle throne on the raised platform, Marcus on one side, Caius on the other. Edward laid Kat in front of them on a stone table. Altar my mind whispered to me.

"Who will herald the honor of turning this girl?" I looked at my watch. Yep, Kat was officially seventeen now, as she would be for the rest of her life. I didn't know what to do.

"I volunteer!" I said. Aro nodded in acknowledgment. As I walked to the altar, Edward whispered in my ear "You better not mess this up" I knelt beside Kat and pressed my mouth against her throat. My species of vampire turned people differently. It was less risky, because you didn't have to have control and you didn't have to wait three days either. I bit down and started draining her blood. When I finished, I bit down on my own arm and prized open her mouth. My blood dripped slowly into her mouth. After a few seconds, her tongue moved, to lick up the blood that was on her lips. I pressed my bleeding arm to her mouth and felt my blood leaving me. After a minute, I removed my arm and watched. The bite marks in her neck healed and she sat up slowly.

"Josef?" she asked.

"I'm here," I whispered in her ear.

"Friends! The new age of vampires will begin!" shouted Aro. Cheering rang through the hall. Kat looked terrified.

"Aro, Katherine is tired and hungry. As her sire, it is my duty to watch her and teach her the ways of the vampire. I must make sure she feeds," I said.

"Go Josef. Watch her for you have been granted a great privilege and responsibility" I took Kat's hand and led her from the chamber.
