It was hours later when someone came in. and even then, it was only a human with a plate of food.

“Aro wants you well fed,” she said when I looked at the amount of food on the plate.

“That doesn’t sound good”

“Not like that…I think it’s got something to do with Josef…and Mick”

“Who’s Mick?”

“Mick. He’s a vampire like Josef”

“What with the brown eyes?”

“Actually, Mick’s got silvery blue eyes”

“Why are they like that?”

“They only ever tell you if they trust you. Theirs not many of them in the building and it’s easy to mix them up with us”

“What, they look like humans? I mean, even more then the normal vampires?”

“Well that sucks. I’ll have to be extra careful of what I say” she smiled and left. It wasn’t easy being a maid in a vampire building. Do something wrong and your punishment would be an invite to dinner. I looked at my plate of food. It looked tasty, comparing the processed muck I’d had to eat since I’d been put in the institute. But you could never be too careful when Vampires were concerned. But the smell had filled my room so I picked up the fork and started eating it. About a second after I started eating the door opened again.

“Aro wants to talk to you,” said Josef. As he led me away, I looked him over. He definitely looked more human then any of the others. When I looked back up at his face, he was looking at me, one eyebrow raised. I blushed. We reached Aro.

“Ah, Katherine. I would like to introduce you to someone. Katherine Turner. Meet Beth Turner” A tall woman with blonde hair. She was like my twin.

“Do you know her?”

“Never seen her before in my life,” I admitted.

“Well, your mother knew her. And her brother” I still had no idea where this was going.

“In fact, your mother was a very good friend of Beth’s brother” Oh, right. I got his tone.

“Oh” I said.

“So, we brought you here”

“But my family is dead. I should be too, if…” I didn’t want to mention the fact that I had crawled through a pipe half my size to sneak away from a vampire before being found by a human who submitted me to the institute.

“I was there on that raid that your family was killed”

“What about my sister?”

“She was no threat. I was just thirsty” he said it like it made up for slaughtering my family.

“So…what’s going to happen to me?”

“You’re going to stay here. Beth is your aunt and there’s lots of space here” Great. Stuck in the vampires den for seeming the rest of my life.

“Beth?” he walked off. Beth smiled at me and led me to a large comfortable room. There was a second room leading off it.

“What’s in there?”

“Oh. My bed”

“You’re human?”

“No. I’m a vampire, like Josef and Mick”

“Oh. Those weird ones that I’ve been hearing about”

“Yes. Mick turned me. He’s asleep next door” I peeked my head round the door and saw a large industrial freezer.

“You sleep in a freezer?”

“Yes. The others don’t but the ones that are like me do”

“And you look exactly the same as when you’re human?”

“Until what?”

“Until we sprout fangs. Then our eyes change color. The iris goes really light blue, almost white. And our skin goes paler. We’re also different from the others in what we can do. The sun is bad for us. But we still die from fire, or beheading” she explained. I wasn’t really sure about why I was here but I didn’t want to talk to this vampire about vampires.

“Do I have free rein? Like, can I go anywhere?”

“Anywhere, inside, yes. Unless someone tells you otherwise”

“Okay. I’m going to have a look around” I got up and peeked around the door. Not many people around. I walked quickly down the corridor. I found a large library, which had quite a few vampires in it, including the dark haired girl and bronze haired boy I’d seen earlier. I found a spiral staircase, going both down and up. I went down. There was a kitchen where humans were cooking. There was another set of steps that led into a kind of wine cellar. Except that, this one was full of bottles of blood. I went back up the stairs. I was going to head up the stairs when I noticed another door. I opened it and looked in.

“Why are you snooping around?” a voice asked from behind me. I jumped and nearly screamed as I turned. It was Josef.

“Are you following me or something?”

“Not really. But as you’re about to go into my room…I think I have every right to be here” I nodded.

“Right. I’ll be going”

“Little word of advice, there are something’s that should remain secret”
