I went back to Beth’s room. Josef was mysterious and he obviously wouldn’t answer my questions.

“So, what do you do around here for entertainment?” I asked.

“Lot of stuff. Chat, read, watch TV, and go on the internet. We’ve all got hobbies”

“There’s not much for me to do. I’m not used to having so much free time, normally my day is scheduled” she nodded.

“Beth?” called voice. A man with silvery eyes and swept back brown hair.

“Oh hey Mick”

“Who’s your new friend?”

“Niece, actually”

“Long story. My brother met her mother at that party about 16 years ago, and, well you can see. Anyway, Mick, this is Katherine Turner. Katherine, this is Mick St John. My fiancée” I shook his hand. He was quite good looking in a vampir-ish way.

“Have you had any sleep?”

“Not yet. A few more hours and I’ll hit the icebox. Where are you going to sleep?” she asked me.

“Well, I have a room. And a bed”

“Hey Mick, Beth” it was Josef. I swear he was stalking me.

“Aro wants to talk to you. He wants to run a blood test. Confirm you are actually related to Beth, that you don‘t have any diseases etc” he said to me.

“Okay” he led me out. I was taken to a lab. There was a blond guy with topaz eyes.

“Hello. I’m Carlisle. I’m going to run your blood test”

“Is this really safe?”

“Yes. I have built up a resistance to blood and Josef doesn’t work like that. He doesn’t automatically go into frenzy when the smell’s in the air” Josef was staying? Weird. Carlisle picked up a needle. I hate needles! AHHHH! PANIC ATTACK! It was a little weird to panic about something like that when I was in a room with two vampires who were going to do stuff with my blood but I hated needles. I noticed Josef was smiling slightly. Could vampires sense fear? I didn’t know. Josef coughed to disguise a laugh. I would have glared at him but I was too petrified. I felt a small stab of pain in my arm.

“All done” said Carlisle. I looked at my arm and saw the small pinprick of red on my arm.

“Josef?” he asked, handing him the vial of blood. He uncorked it and sniffed. I thought I noticed him wince slightly.

“She’s Beth’s niece. I can smell it. And she doesn’t have any diseases” he said. He shuddered. I looked at him. I wanted to know what was going on.

“I’ll take you back to your room and tell Aro the good news. Bye Carlisle”

“Bye Josef. Bye Katherine” I smiled and waved. My head was full of questions. How can you tell that I’m Beth’s niece just by smelling my blood? Why did you wince? Why did you shudder? What’s going on here? Then I noticed something.

“This isn’t the way back to my room”

“Are you sure? You’ve only been here a day”

“Positive. On the way, I noticed a tapestry and some paintings. This route hasn’t got any of those” I persisted.

“You’re observant aren’t you? No, this isn’t the way back to your room. I figured I cut your little exploration short. I’m going to show you something. I decided to take you there while you were distracted”

“I’m not distracted”

“Yes you are. Knowing you, your mind is full of questions. I’ve seen you do it before. C’mon, just follow me”

“You’re pushy”

“This isn’t pushy. You haven’t even begun to imagine me being pushy yet” he said, smiling. Part of my mind was thinking about how beautiful his voice was. He led me up a flight of stairs and onto the roof. We were on a flat section with the roofs either side. The sun was just starting to set. He raised his hand to block one ray of sun that fell onto him.

“It’s beautiful isn’t it?” he said. I nodded, speechless. Then I remembered something.

“How did you see me be distracted before?” I turned but he was gone.
