“I like the dress. It looks good on you” I blushed slightly. We had been walking in silence through the maze of passageways and corridors and he popped out with a random remark like that.

“Thanks” I muttered. He smiled slightly. I groaned. He looked at me, concerned.

“I am never in a million years going to remember my way around this place”

“Well, what are we going to do with you? We can’t leave you to starve!” he looked deep in thought for a moment.

“I know! I’ll escort you to breakfast each day. And if you want, maybe your other meals?” he offered. I nodded, astounded. He smiled again and opened a door. It was a huge dining hall with a long wooden table running down the middle. I was the only person in there.

“What’s the point of this?”

“There are humans everywhere around here. They’re servants. And they eat here. And occasionally Aro uses it as a banquet hall. There’s food over there,” he pointed to a small kitchen room. I walked in. I found a packet of cornflakes in a cupboard. Strange. In the facility, I had hated the morning cornflakes. Now it was all I wanted. I turned to find some milk. Josef had followed me in.

“I swear…if one more person makes me jump…” I let the threat trail off as I struggled to think of something appropriate.

“You’ll what? Pitch a fit? Spray mace on someone?”

“I can’t think of anything. But I was actually thinking about something involving a chainsaw” I said. He rolled his eyes and went over to a metal fridge. He opened it and fished out a bottle of milk.

“I’m surprised there’s any fridges left in this building,” I said sarcastically.

“You heard about that, huh? I suppose it was Mick and Beth”

“Yeah. How did they get here? I’m not trying to be nosy. I’m just interested”

“I’ll show you later. There are records in the library”

“I don’t think I’m allowed in there. I tried going in there before and I got stopped”

“Well…that makes sense”

“Will you please stop that? Is everyone around here like that?”

“Pretty much. When it comes to you”

“I don’t even want to know,” I said. I took the milk off him and poured some into my bowl before leaving the room.

“You don’t seem to really understand the depth of everything that goes on here” he persisted.

“Well, how can I when nobody will tell me anything?” I replied. He nodded. Then an image came to me. It was as vivid as a lightning bolt. The cellar. The vampires. One vampire stood out. His hood was down as he scanned the cellar. His eyes locked onto mine.

“Josef” I whispered. He wasn’t looking at me. He was looking down the hall. I sat down and just stared into space.

“Kat! Katherine! Hello? Anyone in there?” he asked, waving a hand in front of my face. I jumped away from him.

“I…got to go,” I said. I left my bowl on the table and hurried off. I bumped into Edward the moment I left the room. He took one look at me and pulled me away. I was to confused and afraid to do anything. Then I realized I was back in my room.

“Calm down” he said.

“Jasper! I need you,” he said. Jasper was at his side.

“What happened?” he asked.

“She had a memory recall, and realized that our friend Josef is not quite the saint he appears to be. She naturally freaked, after remembering that the guy she was conversing with was part of the team that killed her family”

“Oh. Right. Understandable. I wish Alice had told me”

“It’s not like she had made the decision to see that, did she? Alice couldn’t have seen it” Jasper nodded. The room was flooded with calm and I felt myself relax.

“I trusted him. That…that…” I struggled to think up a word bad enough to covey my opinion of Josef.

“Calm down” said Jasper.

“You don’t have to see him for the rest of the day. Or ever even. Spend time with some others. Alice would be ecstatic and you haven’t met Bella or Esme yet” Edward said. I assumed they were people of his family.

“And you’re Beth’s niece. Not everyone around here is a murderer or a traitor. Make some friends. We may be vampires but we are capable of understanding human emotions,” Jasper said. He smiled. I nodded. Alice was by my side.

“Let’s go do something away from Saint Josef” I smiled at her sarcastic name.

“And we’ll make sure Josef doesn’t bother you” said Edward.
