After the phone call with Renee, I lost myself in my work. There wasn’t much to do, but it was enough. Renee had told me she would be out tomorrow. I hope we can make it until then.
The day pasted in a blur. I finished work, and it was already around 10:00. Grabbing my gun belt and keys, I exited the office, giving a muffled ‘goodbye’ and a short wave to the few that were still there, and got in my car.
I knew dinner wasn’t going to be much when I got home, maybe some fish, so I stopped by the diner on my way home and got steak and potatoes to go.
Once I was in the house, I hung up my belt, kicked off my shoes, and headed towards the kitchen. I didn’t feel like watching sports.
I decided to check in on Bella again before I went to bed. Nothing. As usual. I was asleep before my head even hit the pillow.
I woke up to the sound of the phone ringing. Ugh. I hauled myself out of bed and down the stairs.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.” I mumbled as I made my way through the mess of the house and to the phone.
“Hello?” I grumbled with a sigh.
“WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! I HAVE BEEN CALLING NON-STOP FOR THE PAST THIRTY MINUTES!!! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MANY TIMES I CALLED?!”
“I called you 27 times. 27 TIMES!!”
“Renee, I don’t have the patience for this. Why did you call me 27 times?! I don't know WHAT time it is in Florida, but it's 6 in the morning here. Not to mention it's Saturday! What do you want?!"
I was beginning to wonder if she hung up when she spoke again.
"Are you done yet?" she asked me in a voice that made it sound like a 5 year old that broke the rules.
"What do you want?" I repeated.
"I wanted to check in on my baby! What’s so wrong about that?!"
"That's it. You called me at 6 in the morning...for that?"
"Then what did you call me for." I said between clenched teeth.
"I called you...to tell you...that... '." She rushed out all in one breath.
With my mind still foggy from sleep and the adrenaline from my fit of anger, it took me a few seconds to comprehend what she said.
And when I did... Oh boy.
"WHAT !?!?!? RENEE!!! YOU CAN’T BE SERIOUS!!!!! BELLA NEEDS YOU!!! SHE CAN'T STAY LIKE THIS UNTIL SATURDAY !! HOW CAN YOU BE SO SELFISH --"
"STOP IT CHARLIE! JUST STOP IT! THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY FOR PHIL! BELLA IS NOT DYING . SHE DOESN'T HAVE CANCER . SHE WILL MAKE IT UNTIL SATURDAY. IT'S ONLY TWO DAYS FROM WHEN I WAS PLANNING ON BEING THERE. TWO DAYS!!! SO JUST STOP IT!"
I'm not going to say anything. I'm not going to say anything. I chanted over and over again in my head. It's better to hold your tongue than to say something you'll regret. I reminded myself. I bit my tongue hard until the familiar metallic taste of blood pooled in my mouth. Ugh. Blood. I got queasy for a second before it passed. I may be a chief of police, but when it came to blood, I was no better than Bella was at controlling my stomach.
Bella. Renee. The phone. Renee on the phone. Talking about Bella. What was she saying? Right. Phil. Interview. Gotcha. My mind was not use to functioning this early on a Saturday.
I sighed and out the phone back to my ear. When had I pulled it away? When Renee was screaming? Probably. "Renee. Let's handle this like the mature, adults we can be. This is just a minor setback. Is there any chance you can get an earlier flight?" I attempted to reason with her.
"Well...Phil's interview is Friday morning at 11, so it'll be what, 7 there?"
"That sounds about right."
"Well...I guess I could an earlier flight."
"How much earlier." I knew her tricks.
"The earliest IM getting on a plane is 9."
"But then you won’t get here until 8 Renee."
"I know. That'll give me enough time to unpack, get settled, and check on Bella in the morning."
"Renee. That's no better than arriving on Saturday."
"Well that’s too bad! Take it or leave it."
"Just get the ticket Renee." And with that I hung up and slowly made my way back upstairs, only to fall asleep the second I lay down.
