I woke up Saturday morning with a smile on my face, lying next to the man I loved. Seeing as how our relationship was anything but traditional, we skipped the whole 'not seeing each other before you walk down the isle,' thing. We did, however, start off in separate beds, but around midnight, when I couldn't fall asleep, I made Edward sleep with me. Sleeping on the other side of Edward was Masen and Maddy.
"Morning," Edward said.
"Morning. When did they crawl in?"
I stretched as much as my body would let me.
"I'm way too comfortable to get up right now," I said.
"Me too. But, Maddy has her gymnastics meet today and then there's a wedding we're supposed to go to," Edward joked.
"Oh yeah, almost forgot about that."
"Are you taking her, or am I," Edward asked.
"I'll see what Alice has planned. You may have to."
"Not a problem."
A few seconds later, Alice came walking in.
"Morning! Oh, sorry, I didn't see them with you," she said looking at the kids.
"It's okay, they have to wake up sometime," Edward said carefully removing him arm from under Maddy's head. Within a few minutes, our room was filled with laughter.
Alice sat at the foot of the bed, while Edward playfully tickled Maddy and Masen to wake them up.
"Here's he plan for today: the two of you will be bringing Mad to her meet, then back here by three where you'll be separated until six, when the big event takes place. Edward, you'll be responsible for getting Masen in his suit, alright," Alice asked talking a mile a minute.
"Alice, how many Red bull's have you had already," he asked.
"Three since four this morning. Now, hurry up and get downstairs for breakfast."
Maddy's meet was a great distraction from my nerves. Renee and Esme went with us, and Masen stayed home with Emmett playing XBox in his room. Maddy took first place in floor, third in bars and fifth in vault and beam. She was just happy to get a ribbon.
I placed a few calls to Charlie at the house, station and on his cell phone with no luck. Renee suggested that Phil or Carlisle walk me down the isle, but I didn't feel comfortable. I loved both of them tremendously, but I really wanted my dad to do it.
When we returned home, we heard Alice's pixie voice barking out orders to anyone and everyone who was standing still.
"...NO!! Those don't belong there!...WIPE YOUR FEET! I DON'T HAVE TIME TO WASH THE FLOOR AGAIN!...Why are you standing there? Do you need something to do?"
"Quick, go hide with your brother before she sees you," Edward whispered to Maddy.
Maddy took off running for the stairs with a huge grin.
"She's not going to get me, Daddy!!"
"It's about time," Alice said grabbing my arm and heading for the staircase. "We've got so much to do!"
"Alice, just let me sit for a few minutes. My feet and back are killing me."
"Edward, you make sure no one's standing around doing nothing! I'm not paying them to look pretty," Alice called as we headed upstairs.
"And hide her Red bulls," I shouted.
Once we got upstairs, I collapsed onto the bed.
"Alice, can I take a quick nap, please? I really need too."
"How quick is quick?"
Alice stood there, looked at her notes, and then spoke.
"Okay. One hour. I need to make sure is here and that no one is standing around. Can you believe the nerve of some people?"
My eyes were closed and I was drifting off by the time Alice closed the door behind her.
"Mommy, wake up," I heard an angel girl say in my ear.
I rolled over.
"Mom, do you know what I just saw? Uncle Jasper kissed Auntie Alice right on the lips!"
I laughed and pulled her close to me.
"Mommy and Daddy do that."
"Yeah, but that's different."
"Yelling at someone for dragging mud on the carpet."
"Are you excited to wear your dress and have your hair done?"
"Yeah. Can I wear makeup too?"
"Please? You get too!"
"Maybe a little lipstick."
It was only a half hour or so until the wedding. Masen was sitting on the couch in Carlisle's study, impatient as always. Sitting on the desk were four boxes. I picked up one with Masen's name on it, sat next to him and gave it to him.
"What's this," he asked.
Masen, being the destructive child he is, tore open the box. Inside was a gold pocket watch.
"A pocket watch?"
"We all have one." Carlisle, Jasper, Emmett and I pulled ours out. "See? We all have the same crest on the front, and on the back, we all have our names on them. I thought today would be the perfect day to give you yours."
"How long have you had this?"
"Since you were born."
"Really," he asked as he spun it around.
"Can I go show mom?"
"Yes, but don't run."
Before I could finish my sentence, Masen was already running out of the study.
"Damn that kid has energy," Emmett said.
"No kidding. The only time he's still is when he's sleeping."
"Have you heard from Charlie," Carlisle asked.
"No. I think I've called him half a dozen times today."
"Huh. You'd think he'd set aside any bad feelings for Bella's sake," Jasper said.
"You'd think so. She still won't tell me what all was said, which leads me to believe something bad happened."
Alice knocked then walked in.
"Wow. Are you sure Bella's okay with you wearing that? You just may put her to shame," Jasper said.
"Trust me, Bella will knock you off of your feet. People are starting to arrive, so why don't the four of you go downstairs? Make sure they get seated and keep them out of the tent."
I waited with Alice as my family left.
"Alice, can you give these to Bella? Tell her to open the small one first."
"Sure. But she didn't get you anything," Alice said taking the boxes from my hands.
"If she says anything, tell her the gifts she's given me are the two little munchkins and the one still growing in her belly."
"Look Mom," Masen said running in. "Look what Dad gave me!"
I took the watch from his hands and instantly recognized it.
"Wow. How nice, Masen."
"Dad said only the men have them."
"Well you are our little man, aren't you," I said.
"HEY! How come he gets something and I don't?"
I waited for the hairstylist to finish, then took a box out of my side table. Maddy stood between my legs and carefully opened the box. She gasped a bit when she saw what was inside.
"When Dad and I were in Seattle getting our rings, I had the pendant and earrings made especially for you."
"Put them on!! Put them on!"
Once Maddy's jewelry was on, Alice sent her, Rose, Esme and Renee downstairs. After my dress was on, I grabbed my cell phone again and dialed Charlie's number. Voicemail again.
"Hey Dad, it's me again. Um, just calling to see if you were coming or not. I really hope you are. Call me, there's still a few minutes before it starts."
I snapped my phone shut and looked at Alice.
"Maybe he's on his way?"
"Here, these are from Edward," Alice said picking up two small boxes. "He said to open this one first."
Attached to a small box was a note from Edward:
Wear these and always know my heart belongs to you. Inside were heart shaped diamond stud earrings.
I walked over to a mirror and put them in. Again, I grabbed my cell phone to see if there were any messages, which there weren't. I did notice, however, the time: 5:55 p.m.
"Here, now open this one."
Alice handed me another box. Again, I opened the note first:
For the one we lost. Inside was a necklace with an angel pendant. The wings were diamonds. I instantly started crying at the site of it.
"Wait wait wait! We can't have you crying already!"
"Sorry," I said dabbing my eyes with a tissue.
I bent down a bit so Alice could put it on, then walked over and looked out the window, looking for a car I knew wouldn't be there.
"Do you want me to stall for a few more minutes," Alice asked.
I couldn't answer, but just shook my head. She walked out and closed the door behind her. I dialed Charlie again.
"Hey Dad. It's me again. It's six, and I'm holding out for you. I know you don't want me to marry Edward, and I know you have your reasons whatever they may be, but, couldn't you put them aside for a few minutes? I'll have Alice stall until six thirty, then I'm walking down the isle. If you're not here, then I know you not only oppose this marriage, but you oppose everything about our relationship, including your grandchildren."
I snapped my phone closed and waited.
I knew something was up when I saw Alice walking towards me with a look on her face.
"It's going to be a little bit longer," She said.
"She's trying to reach Charlie."
I was growing impatient by the minute. I couldn't find Carlisle, Jasper or Emmett, and I really needed them to distract me. I just wanted to hear the music play and watch as she walked towards me, knowing that within a few short minutes, she would be my wife.
I heard Alice say she was stalling for a few minutes, gathered Emmett and Jasper, and headed upstairs. In my mind, Bella was already my daughter, and had been since the day she announced she was pregnant. I didn't want her to be sad on this special day, and was determined to do whatever it took to make her happy.
When we reached her room, I lightly tapped on the door.
"Come in," I heard her say.
I walked in, with Emmett and Jasper behind me, and saw her standing by the large window with her hands on her ever expanding belly.
"You look beautiful," I said.
"No word from Charlie?" Bella shook her head. "Well, we just wanted you to know that if you wanted, We'd be happy to give you away."
A smile came across her face.
"You don't have to, if you don't want too. It's just a suggestion."
"I know. And I appreciate it." I saw her glance at the clock on the table: 6:25 pm, then let out a hard sigh. "While you've done so much for me, Carlisle, I would really love it if Emmett walked me down."
Emmett was a bit shocked. I think he thought that she would choose me.
"Whatever you'd like," I said. "But we'd better get going, huh?"
Bella gave another glance outside, then picked up her bouquet and headed to the door. Alice, Esme, Rose, Renee, Phil and the twins were waiting. We all walked down the back staircase, out the side door and then entered the house through the kitchen. Alice took the pale blue and white petals from the fridge and placed them in Maddy's basket.
"Now, you're going to do it like we practiced, right," Alice quietly asked.
"Jasper, why don't you go be with Edward and the officiant. Let them know we're ready."
"Hey, out of curiosity, why did you pick me," Emmett asked.
"Because when we were in high school and going through everything, I always felt like you were my big brother; like you were my protector, in a way. Jasper too, but not so much. You were more vocal about it."
"Huh. I seriously thought you were going to pick Carlisle, though."
"I almost did."
"What made you change your mind?"
"I remembered something you told me a few years back. You said that no matter who I chose, all you wanted was for me to be happy, even if I was with Jake. Jasper and Carlisle, well, I always thought they were holding out for Edward, even though they didn't agree with his actions. But you, you really meant it."
Alice had everyone lined up in front of us, and cued the harpist. With the first note, my nerves were checked and I became giddy. The little one inside me started kicking like crazy.
Carlisle kissed Esme, then walked her down the isle, followed by Renee and Phil; Rose glanced over her shoulder and winked just before she walked. Alice, who was fidgeting with the back of my dress, almost missed her cue, but recovered gracefully, as usual. Masen grabbed his ring pillow from the counter, stuck his little chest out and marched down the isle. I'm sure it looked amusing, because we could hear chuckles coming from the guests.
"Good luck mom. Don't trip," Maddy said before she took her turn down the isle.
Emmett and I both quietly laughed.
"You ready for this," Emmett asked.
Once Maddy was in her place in front of Alice and Rose, Emmett led me down the isle. The living room was spectacular. The rows of chairs were covered in white linen, with a band of ice blue fabric tied into bows on the back. Hanging from each bow was a hand made icicle or snowflake. There were candles burning everywhere, giving the room a warm glow. On the mantle above the fireplace where everyone stood, I could see garland hanging along with framed pictures of the family.
Standing at the end of the isle was my Edward, who took my breath away.
Welcome to the wedding of Edward Anthony Masen Cullen and Isabella Marie Swan.
Who now, gives this woman to this man?
Emmett: With great honor and on behalf of both families, I do.
Bella hugs Emmett. Edward steps forward. Emmett takes Bella's hand, and places it in Edwards, then stands behind Jasper. Edward and Bella step forward, in front of the minister.
Edward and Isabella, in presenting yourselves here today to be joined in marriage, you perform an act of faith. This faith can grow and develop and last, but only if you both decide to make it so. A lasting and growing love is not guaranteed by any ritual.
If you would have the foundation of your marriage be the devotion you have for one another, not just at this moment, but for all the days to come, then treasure the hopes and dreams that you bring here today. Establish that your love will never be blotted out by the common nor obscured by the ordinary in life. Faults will surface where now you find comfort, and admiration can be shattered by the routine of daily life.
Dedication, love, and joy can grow only when you nourish them together. Stand fast in that hope and confidence, having faith in your shared destiny just as strongly as you have faith in yourselves and in one another today. Only with this spirit can you forge a union that will strengthen and endure all the days of your lives.
Bella, my beautiful Bella. You are my saving grace. You believed in me when no one else would; you make me strive to be better than I am. You have taught me how to love, and evidence of that is in the form of our children. I don't know where I'd be without them or you. I stand here before you because of your graciousness. You are the love of my life, the one and only woman I pledge my life and love to. From this day forward, I promise to love, respect and honor you. I will listen to you and be open and honest with you. I will be your trusted partner and stand by you through good times and bad. Whatever the future hold, I will love you and stand by you. I promise this now and for all the days of my life.
Edward, if you would have told me four years ago that we'd be standing here, I don't think I would have believed it. But I have dreamed about this day for so long. You have given the two most precious things in my life: Maddy and Masen; you've wiped my tears and held me tight when we lost a baby; and I know you'll be there holding my hand when our newest arrival comes. Edward, from this day forward, I promise you these things: I will laugh with you in times of joy and comfort you in times of sorrow. I will share in your dreams, and support you as you strive to achieve your goals. I will listen to you with compassion and understand, and speak to you with encouragement. I will remain faithful to our vows for better or for worse and in times of sickness and in health. I look forward to standing next to you each day watching our children grow. You are my best friend and I will love you for always.
Who now, holds the rings?
Jasper takes the rings from his pocket and hands them to the minister.
This circlet of precious metal is justly regarded as a fitting emblem of the purity and perpetuity of the Marriage State. The ancients were reminded by the circle of eternity, as it is so fashioned as to have neither beginning nor end; while gold is so incorruptible that it cannot be tarnished by use or time. So may the union, at this time solemnized, be incorruptible in its purity and more lasting that time itself.
Minister hands the ring to the Edward, who places it on the Bella's finger:
Wear this ring forever, Isabella, as a symbol of love of all that is unending.
Minister hands the ring to the Bella, who places it on the Edward's finger:
Wear this ring forever, Edward, as a symbol of love and of all that is unending.
I speak now to Edward and Isabella of love, in which the trust and freedom of the other person becomes as significant as the trust and freedom of one's self. We speak to them of generosity, which gathers the beauty of earth for riches, and the kindness which turns away the wrath of foolish men and women. We speak of each of our hopes for their continued growth through patience, one for the other. We speak of our confidence that new levels of understanding, discovered by them in experiences of sorrow and tribulation, shall bring ever new surprises of strength and fortitude they do not now know.
In the years which shall bring Edward and Isabella into greater age and wisdom, we pray that their love shall be ever young; that they shall be able always to recover from moments of despair, the lithesome ways of buoyant youth. In this hope may they keep the vows made on this day, in freedom, teaching each other who they are, what they yet shall be, enabling them to know that in the fullness of being, they are more than themselves and more than each other; that they are all of us, and that together we share joyously the fruits of life.
Inasmuch as Edward and Isabella have declared their love and devotion to each other before family and friends, I now greet them with you as husband and wife.
Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be sanctuary to the other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other. Now there is no isolation for you. Now there is no more loneliness. Now you are two, but there is only one life in front of you.
Go now and enter into the days of your togetherness.
Edward and Bella kiss and the sound of applause fills the room.
Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present to you Mister and Misses Edward and Isabella Cullen.
