Together - Chapter 7
As I kissed Bella, I could feel my heart bursting out of my chest. Finally, she was mine forever. She was not only the mother of my children, but now I could call her my wife.
As I walked up the isle with Bella on my arm, I noticed she was glowing. It was something I had come to love. She was simply beautiful when she was pregnant. But tonight's glow had nothing to do with that. No, tonight she was glowing because she was the happiest person on the planet. We walked into the formal dining room where we waited for everyone else, and while the chairs were moved into the tent.
"Please tell me food is coming soon," Bella said.
"I'm sure it is."
Bella rested her head against my chest and enjoyed the quiet for a moment. But that moment didn't last long. Our guests and family had joined us. Alice was running around like she was earlier today. She must have found the stash of Red Bulls I hid from her. I stood back and watched as Bella attempted to talk to everyone. People were commenting on her dress and asked about the twins and about her pregnancy; some looked at her ring and asked about the necklace I had given her.
Once everyone was moved to the tent, I stole a minute and kissed my wife.
"DAD!" Masen yelled as he ran to us. "Dad, you should see Auntie Alice's face!! She's as red a my Santa stocking!"
"Why," I asked.
"Because the cake is tipping," Maddy said with her usual giggle.
"The cake is tipping? Are you sure," Bella asked.
"Yep! It's so cool! Let's go watch it fall," Masen said as he grabbed Maddy's hand and pulled her back to the tent.
"Those two are quite the pair," Bella said. "I can only imagine what this one will be like."
"Me too. We already have a mini Alice and a mini Emmett."
"Maybe we'll get lucky and get a mini Jasper - a quiet baby."
"Well, whoever's in here sure likes to kick me and stretch into my lungs, that's for sure."
It was a good hour or so into the reception. Edward and I had danced to our song - "If it wasn't for your love" by Heather Headley. About half way through the song, Maddy decided she wanted to dance too and dragged Masen with her. Edward pulled Maddy into his arms and danced around with her, and Masen, realizing he's a man because of the pocket watch, led me around the floor. I sat next to Carlisle with my head on his shoulder and watched as Edward and Esme dance, and started to miss Charlie. My cell phone showed now calls, voicemail or text messages. Emmett offered to dance with me, but I declined.
Our cake was in fact, tilting. It was beautiful, though. It was four tears of light blue with hand painted snowflakes, icicles and flowers. Everyone kept looking at it, and I was sure it was because it looked like it would fall at any minute. But amazingly, it lasted until we cut into it. Once we had our piece on a plate, the whole thing gave way. Alice was livid as Edward an I laughed hysterically.
A little while later, I was sitting with Angela and Ben talking, when I noticed a familiar face standing in next to the doorway of the tent.
I excused myself and walked over to her.
"You're stunning. Alice did a perfect job with the dress," she said.
"Thanks. Is my dad here?"
"He wanted to be here, he really did, but he couldn't get over his stubbornness. You know how he is when he gets like that."
"True, but I've been calling for the past four days practically begging for just a phone call."
"I know, and he's listened to them all. But you have to realize something. Charlie never agreed with your choice of Edward, even after Jacob died. He still feels that Edward stole your future away when he got you pregnant. He always knew you would go on and do great things, and then all of that happened, and he's scared that you're stuck in a place where you're not really happy."
"But I am happy. If I wasn't, would I be having another baby?"
"That's another thing. He thinks that you're only pregnant on accident, and that it's your way of keeping Edward close to you."
"Is he really not here? I would rather talk to him about this than you."
"He's really not here."
I let out a hard sigh.
"This new baby was a surprise, yes. But I'm completely in love with Edward and he's completely in love with me. Why can't he see that he's changed?"
"He does, but he can't forgive him, even after all the apologizing he's done."
"Yes. When you were in the hospital after the twins were born, Edward and Charlie talked. Well, at least they tried to talk. It ended up being a shouting match, but Edward kept apologizing over and over. Charlie said he forgave him, but we all knew he didn't. And then after your last visit, Edward showed up again and begged him to come. Alice and Esme showed up too."
"But I still don't get it! Can't he see that Edward loves me? Can't he see I'm happy?"
"He tries too."
"Gheeze! What else do I have to do? I mean, it's not like I'm going to be a stay at home mom or anything who pumps out a bunch of kids while the husband works, I'm going to law school for goodness sake! Isn't he proud of me for that?"
"He is, but again, he thinks it's just a show; that you're burying your true feelings."
"My true feelings are that I'm in love with Edward, and my children. In March, I will give birth to my third child and am taking a year off of school,-"
"See, that right there. He thinks that during that time you'll realize that you've made a mistake."
"Oh, so he's waiting for me to fail? Is he expecting me to show up on his doorstep in the middle of the night with the kids and tell him I've left Edward?"
"Yes. That's exactly what he's waiting for. He wants to be able to tell you and Edward that you made the wrong choice."
I was stunned and appalled. I walked out of the tent, grabbed Edward's keys to his Volvo and drove over to Charlie's house. I wasn't sure if Rebecca followed me or not, and I didn't care. I found Charlie sitting in the quiet, dark living room. I couldn't look at him, I was so mad.
"What are you doing here?"
"Are you stupid!?"
"Are you stupid? Do you honestly believe that I would have been better off with Jake?"
"So you would rather have had me be with a drunk, than someone who realized they made mistakes and corrected them?"
“Edward is putting on a show for you. It's only a matter of time until he's back to his old ways."
"You're wrong. I don't know what else he has to do to prove to you that he's not the same person he was before."
"The smart decision would have been to leave you alone."
"So you wanted me to be a single mother, then?"
"You were doing fine on your own."
I shook my head in anger.
"In three months or so, I'm having another baby. Did you even know that I lost one? Did you know that Edward never left my side during the whole thing?"
"No. I didn't know what," he said softly.
"Exactly. Do you really think the old Edward would have stayed?"
"No, he would have gone running back to that Tanya girl."
I stood there for a moment.
"Well, if that's what you're waiting for, I'm sorry to say you'll be waiting quite a long time, because he swore to me he wouldn't do it again."
"He said that once before too."
"I would have expected all of this from mom, but not you. If anyone's a disappointment, it's you Dad. It's a shame that after all these years you're still holding a grudge. But I guess that's something you'll have to live with. Me, on the other hand, I'm going back to my husband and kids. I'm going to graduate in the spring, have my baby and raise my family. You on the other hand will have nothing but old pictures to look at. I refuse to let you be a part of my life if you can't put the past in the past and see how happy he makes me. It's a shame Dad. It really is."
With that, I walked out. I knew it would be difficult, but I would keep my word. Edward had changed and if Charlie refused to see it, then so be it.
When I returned to the reception, the dance floor was full of people. I saw Maddy curled up in Carlisle's arm, sound asleep. Masen was sitting on Emmett's lap, his shirt untucked and his cheeks red. I realized these were the people that made me happy; made me whole. I was a Cullen now, and I couldn't ask for anything better than that.
