“I have a choice”

I turned and saw Embry standing there, his features angry.

“What the hell do you think you are doing?” I asked, just as angry as he looked.

Then there was a knock at my door. “Are you okay Kiara?” Jeff’s voice came through the closed door.

“Fine, I’ll see you tomorrow.” I yelled back while glaring at Embry.

I waited until I heard Jeff’s car drive off before I spoke again. “That wasn’t cute.”

“Neither was what you were about to let him do to you,” he replied darkly.

“What the hell business is that of yours?” I slammed my fist into his chest and walked by him. He followed me into the kitchen and watched me pick up the phone.

It rang three times and then Quil answered. “Hello”

“You better come get your boy before I kill him.” I snarled into the phone.

“Kiara?” He asked confused.

“Oh, please! There is something going on here. I smell a rat. Why is Embry in my house scowling at me?” I was still yelling.

“Crap, I’ll be there in a minute. Tell Embry to calm down.” The phone went dead and I hung up.

“Quil said to calm down.” I spat.

“I am calm.” He growled back.

“Hey, I’m just the messenger. Now are you going to tell me why you did that?”

“Maybe.” This time he spoke more softly.

“Whatever.” I threw my hands up in the air in frustration.

“Did Quil tell you about Claire?” He asked, sitting in the chair next to the table.

“Sort of. She’s a little girl he takes care of.” I was completely confused. What did Quil have to do with this.

“Great, they didn’t help me out any did they,” he grumbled.

“I have no idea what you're talking about.” I sat myself on the counter and continued glaring at him. It was getting increasingly difficult to stay mad at him the way he was looking at me now.

“So he didn’t explain about imprinting?” he asked softly.

“Nope” I sighed “what the hell is that?”

“I had no choice. Trust me, if I did I think I would have chosen someone who liked me.” He rushed so fast through what he said that I found myself looking at him dumbly. “Say something.”

“I would if I had any idea what you are talking about.”

“You don’t like me, am I correct in assuming that?” he asked

“Right now, no, I don’t like you much. In general I don’t know you enough not to like you.” I said

“I can deal with that.” He put his hands behind his head, sighed, and closed his eyes.

“I answered your question, now answer mine.” My brows pulled together in frustration.

“Do you believe in love at first sight?” He asked, opening his eyes again.

“I’ve never experienced it, but I suppose it could happen.” I rubbed my temples. “What does that have to do with this.”

“I’m getting to that. Imprinting is our version of love at first sight. We don’t have a choice who we imprint on. See, when we find our other half, our soul mate so to speak, all ties to the world are snipped away and the only thing that holds us here is the person we imprint on. That’s what happened with Quil and Claire and also Jake and Nessie.” He explained watching my reaction.

“Renesmee and Jacob are soul mates?”

“Yes, like I said we don’t have a choice. Anyway, when you looked out the window a few weeks back that’s what happened to me,” he continued.

“Wait just a second, are you telling me that you did this love at first sight crap on me?” I jumped off the counter and walked to stand in front of him.

“It’s a little stronger than that, but essentially, yes, that is what I am saying.” He was completely calm now and seemed relieved.

“That’s all you have to say?” He smiled and my breath caught.

“What do you want me to say?” I dropped my gaze and fidgeted.

“Well, from what I have heard and seen you always have something to say.” Laughing, he reached down and made me look at him.

“You have rendered me speechless. You still had no right to do what you did.” My anger came back again and I yanked my chin from his hand. “You may not have a choice, but I do!” I yelled

“Do you really want to kiss that boy?” He seemed sad as he asked me this.

“Not particularly, but it’s still my choice who I kiss.” At that there was a knock on the front door. I walked out of the kitchen and yanked the door open. “You have some explaining to do, Quil Ateara.”

“What did I do?” He was playing innocent and I knew it.

“You knew about this thing with Embry and you didn’t warn me,” I spat, throwing a punch at him.

He ducked “Hey don’t hurt me, it wasn’t my place to tell you.” He put his hands up and stepped back.

“You could have told me about this imprinting so I didn’t look like an idiot.” I stomped up the stairs, things flying behind me in my anger. I didn’t bother touching my door, I just slammed it with my mind. Things on my shelves started shaking and the pictures on the walls started falling to the floor.

I took a deep breath and centered myself, pulling my legs up and hovering above my bed. I could sense both Quil and Embry right outside my door. After a few minutes of meditation I was calm again.

“You can both come in.” I said

“I’m sorry K.” Quil said, looking dejected.

“Well I know now.”

“What does that mean for us?” Embry asked.

“Well I guess we could go on a date or whatever. I’m not promising you that I’ll fall in love with you.” I said as I lowered myself to my bed.

“We can be just friends. I just want to give you whatever you need.” Embry said, sitting on my bed next to me.

“Friends would be nice. We could take it slow.” I whispered putting my hand on his shoulder.

“Okay, I’ll do it your way.” He smiled again.

“Well, you do have a nice smile.” I tried flirting with him.

“Thank you, but it’s nothing comparedto yours when it hits your eyes. They sparkle and dance when you’re happy.” He touched my face and my heart skipped a beat.

“Well what are we doing tonight?” Quil asked.

“The same thing we do every night, Pinky… try and take over the world.” I laughed at my Pinky and the Brain quote.

“World domination, awesome.” Quil laughed.

“You are both odd.” Embry said, shaking his head.

“Dork, hello…” I pointed at my Harry Potter shirt. “Come on, how many people you know are obsessed with the boy that just wouldn’t die?”

“Okay, you have a point.” He said smiling.

“Do I get my rematch now?” I asked, jumping up and turning on the game and T.V.

“You didn’t forget.” He moved to the floor, grabbing the controller

“No one lets me win.” I sat on the end of the bed, crossing my legs with the other controller in my hand.

We played three games and I lost all three. I finally threw the controller at Quil. “You lose for a while.” I crawled up and laid my head on my pillow.

It did not take long and I was asleep. I don’t know what time it was when I heard a whisper in my ear.

“I’ll see you tomorrow for our date.” Embry whispered softly.

I rolled over to look at him but my room was empty.

I woke up early the next day in a panic. I ransacked my closet and couldn’t find anything. I heard the front door open. Remembering the dress that Dezzy had given me when I finally stopped growing I yelled. “Dezzy where is my duffle bag?”

“Why?” Dezzy said from my doorway.

“I need that yellow dress you bought me.” I said from my floor my head under the bed.

“It’s not there. Hold on I think I saw it in the hall closet.” She left and was back in a flash. “Here.” She threw the wrinkled article of clothing at me. “Now why do you want it so bad?”

“I have a date with Embry.” I was standing now, shaking the dress out.

“Ooo Embry.” She giggled and bounced happily.

“It’s just a date. Why are you all giddy?” I looked at her skeptically.

“He’s like totally in love with you. Or that’s what I gathered from the information I was given.” she explained

I glared at her. “You knew too and didn’t say anything to me.”

“I was told not to.” She moved to my side. “I think it needs ironed.” She changed the subject slyly.

“I suppose you’re right.” I sighed, looking down at the dress.

Dezzy took it back and happily walked out of the room buzzing around the house doing things that I didn’t want to know about.

I sat and turned on my T.V to watch anything that would distract me for any amount of time. Sitting on the end of my bed I watched the screen without truly seeing anything.

A couple of hours later Dezzy called me into the bathroom. She had the modern torture device known as a curling iron plugged into the wall and sitting on the counter along with a bunch of cosmetics.

“Can the prisoner have at least one phone call first.” I asked, eyeing the curling iron.

She sighed “Fine, who are you calling?”

“Quil, I want to find out when Embry is planning to come over.” I said

“Why don’t you just feel for him?”

“I want more than just a few minutes warning.” I walked into my room and grabbed the phone dialing the familiar number.

“Hello.” a woman’s voice answer.

“Is Quil there?”

“No he’s not he said he was going out with friends.”

“Thank you.” I sighed and hung up the phone and the dialed Seth’s number.

It rang a few times “Hello.” Seth’s voice said

“Good, at least I got you.”

“Hey Kiara,” he said happily.

“You never call me by my full name. What’s up?”

“Embry is here and he wants to talk to you,” he said.

“Hello Kiara.” Embry’s deep voice came over the line.

“Hi there I was just using the grape vine to find out when you were coming over.”

“You did hear me last night.”

“Yes, was I not supposed to?”

“No, but I didn’t really want to wake you.”

“Don’t worry, I went right back to sleep.”

“Good, you look cute when you sleep.”

I ignored his comment “What time are you coming?”

“I’ll be there in an hour and a half. I have to do something first.”

“Okay, see you then. Bye.” I hung up.

I walked back into the bathroom “You have one hour to make me beautiful.”

“You’re already beautiful. I’m just trying to make you irresistible.”

I rolled my eyes and straddled the toilet. Dezzy yanked brushed through and curled my thick hair.

“Turn around, I only have a ten minutes to do your face,” she said

I obeyed her and she applied a light layer of make-up on my face.

“Hurry up and go get dressed he’ll be here soon.” she said when she finished.

I pulled the dress on, carefully adding a shawl over my arms to finish the look. Then I heard a knock at the door and my heart stopped for a second.
