“Remind me why I feel I should torture myself… Oh yeah, I‘m a glutton for punishment”

I put off telling Jeff as long as I could. I finally got up the courage when he asked me on another date.

“What are we doing tomorrow?” Jeff asked on Friday.

“I can’t go out with you anymore.” I said, not meeting his eyes.

We were in the middle of the lunch line when he froze. “Why not?” His face was rapidly turning red.

I looked up into his face “I met someone else.”

“What that boy from last week?” he spat bitterly.

I stuck my chin out stubbornly “Even though it’s none of your business, yes.”

“So you were just leading me on?” He was now yelling at the top of his lungs.

“Be quiet,” I hissed. “People are staring.”

“I don’t give a damn!” he yelled while looking around the room.

“You’re an ass.” I spat.

Jeff’s hand came up and smacked me. Although I saw it coming, I was too shocked to stop it. I allowed my face to move with the strike. Then my anger over took me. This son of a bitch had the balls to hit a woman. Curling my fist, I punched him in the jaw a lot harder then I meant to.

I heard his jaw brake as soon as my fist connected. He fell back and rolled over onto his knees and elbows his face in his hands, screaming.

That’s when the teacher on lunch duty grabbed my arm. “You, Ms. Williams, are going to see Mr. Greene.” I looked up and saw my Spanish teacher’s face.

“He started it.” I said, pointing at Jeff’s crumpled figure..

I mouthed the word “sorry” to Colin, whose face was pale as I was pulled along and out the door.

She led me through the campus into the office, pushing me roughly into one of the folding chairs and disappearing into the principal’s office. A few short moments later Mr. Greene yelled my name.

I walked into his office preparing to defend myself.

“You’re fighting now?” He yelled.

“Jeff slapped me.” I spat defensively I stayed standing with my arms crossed over my chest.

“I see no evidence of that. You seem fine, he’s on his way to the hospital.” Mr. Greene continued to yell. I could tell his blood pressure was up because his face was the brightest red and I could hear the blood pulsing through his veins.

“That should teach him not to hit girls.” I spat.

“Suspended, you are suspended. Don’t come back to my school for two weeks.” he pointed at his door. “I’ll call your sister to come get you. Sit in the front office until she comes to get you.”

I nodded curtly, leaving his office and slumping into the same folding chair I had just vacated. I waited twenty minutes for Dezzy to show up, during which time I got several glares from the office lady and the few studentswho came in and out of the office.

Dezzy walked in, wearing her lab coat and scrubs. “The pulled me out of work to come get you. You were fighting that Jeff boy. I thought you were friends.” Her Scottish brogue was thick and evident, and I fought back a smirk.

“Can we talk about this in the car. I’ve been banned from school for the next two weeks.” I grumbled and walked out the office slipping into the passenger seat of the car.

“You know you broke that poor boy's jaw.” She spat when she joined me.

“Oh, yeah I heard it. Teach him not to hit a woman won’t it?” I chuckled.

“He hit you?” She looked angry, but it was not directed at me this time.

“I think a broken jaw is plenty punishment for him.” I soothed her.

“Yes, I suppose.” She sighed. “I wouldn’t let Embry hear about this.”

“Why?” I asked

“He might get angry, and we really don’t need him doing that.. He phases when he gets angry,” she explained as we drove out of the parking lot.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked after I realized that we weren’t going back to the house.

“Carlisle is getting off in a few minutes and his family is going to baby-sit you until my shift is over,” she grumbled.

“Come on Dezzy, I can’t get in trouble at home.” I complained.

“Please, you found a way to get kicked out of school.” She pulled into a parking space and put the car in park.

I looked over and saw Carlisle standing next to a black Mercedes. I got out, cursing under my breath.

Carlisle smiled at me. “What did he do to you? We had to wire his jaw shut. You know he could press charges.” His smile faded as he spoke the last part.

I glared at him before getting into his car.

“Did I say something?” he asked when he took his seat behind the wheel.

“Jeff is going to be a wife beater when he gets older. I wasn’t going to let him beat on me.” I grumbled

He was quiet while we drove to the big white house, and did not talk again until we were in the garage. “You could have done a lot more damage than you did.” I could not believe it, this vampire was scolding me like I was his child.

I raised a raven brow defiantly. “Do you think I hit him as hard as I could have?”

Edward pulled my door open. “He’s just concerned, kid.”

“Exactly,” Carlisle agreed.

“That’s not the point. Granted, I hit him harder then I should have. That son of a bitch should never have laid his hands on me. I thought I would teach him a much needed lesson.” I pulled myself out of the car and stomped out of the garage and into the woods.

I wasn’t paying any attention to were I was walking. I was angry and didn’t really care. Then I heard a grizzly snarl coming from a few feet away. Looking up I saw a black wolf as large as a horse.

“Go away dog.” I grumbled walking off. The wolf followed me. “Jesus, can‘t you take a hint?”

He sat on his hind legs and stared at me his growl ceasing. From somewhere off in the distance I heard something or someone tearing through the trees.

It didn’t take long for what I heard to appear where I standing looking at the black wolf.

Embry’s broke through the trees in his wolf form flanked by a russet colored wolf that did not have any problem keeping up with him.

Embry turned and went back into the trees reappearing a few seconds later in his human form his chest bare.

“Embry what’s going on?” I asked a look of confusion spreading across my face.

“Sam it’s okay. She didn’t know better.” Embry spoke to the large black wolf. He grabbed my arm and started to pull me away.

“Wait what did I do?” I asked

“You’re over the boundary line.” He explained still pulling me. “He had every right to attack you.”

“That’s all I need another fight today!” Yelling, I pulled my arm out of Embry grasp and stalked off.

Embry did not take the hint that I wanted to be alone and followed. “You got in a fight today?” I could tell that he was not happy about that either.

“Jeff hit me, so I hit him back. Little good that did me, I got kicked out of school for my efforts.” I grumbled angrily.

“That bastard hit you?” Embry asked, shaking in anger.

“I broke his jaw.” I stated flatly.

I heard a gurgling, wheezy sound and I noticed that the russet colored wolf was following us.

“You broke his jaw? Well you don’t need me to protect you from human boys then, do you?”

“Who is this?” I pointed at the wolf still making the noise I assumed was laughter.

“Jacob,” he barked, still upset.

“Oh.” I walked off the way I came and found my way back to the Cullens’ house.

“I hear you have a good right hook.” Emmett chuckled when I walked through the front door.

I glared at him and went to the corner were Nessie was sitting playing happily. “Hey pretty girl?” I said kneeling next to her. “You want to go outside and play with me?”

She nodded happily and put her hand out for me to take.

I took her outside picking her up in my arms pulling my legs up and put her in my lap as I glided around the yard.

Nessie giggled happily. “You like that do you?” I asked my eyes closed as I took in her sweet energy.

I felt her place her hand on my cheek and a vision flashed in my mind. She showed me Embry’s surly face, and wondered what was wrong with him.

“He’s not happy with me. It seems I walked somewhere I shouldn’t have,” I explained.

She continued showing me pictures of Embry, wondering why he was upset. “He apparently imprinted on me.” I informed her and she giggled, showing me a picture of Embry kissing me. I laughed and spun around in the air.

We glided through the surrounding woods for several hours, having our strange conversation.

The final picture she showed me was of me floating with her in my lap, a purple energy around me. She was wondering why she could see this. It confused me as well. How was it the gifted child was so in tune with me that she could share my gift.

“I see colors like that around people it’s there energy force I sense it and after I know the person enough I can see it. Like you, I can see that your energy is a vibrant blue and very powerful.” I explained to her what I could do.

She looked at her own hand and smiled, I knew that if she could see my energy she could see her own.

“What are you two out here doing?” Dezzy’s happy voice came seconds before her body was through the trees.

“Nothing, just having girl time.” I said smiling.

“Well, Embry is waiting for you by the car. Apparently he wants to talk to you.” Dezzy said smiling and winking at Nessie.

I floated into the front yard and then dropped my legs still floating Nessie in mid air in front of me. “Take her inside for me please.” I said and waited for Dezzy to walk up before I lowered Nessie. Dezzy and the willing child went into the house.

“What did I do now?” I asked him closing the distance between us.

“I need you to be more careful. If Jake wouldn’t have been in wolf form Sam would have attacked you. Jake told him who you are. I was with him when Sam told him so I tore off running when Jake told me you were on Quileute land.” He sighed, pulling me into his arms. “Sam would have felt terrible if hehad hurt you.”

“I didn’t know I was doing anything wrong. I won’t go anywhere near your land again.”

“That’s not it. You can come on the land with me. It’s just that Sam had no idea who you were.” He kissed me on the forehead.

“I’m going to be so bored for the next two weeks.” I mumbled. “Unless you want to ditch and spend all your time with me.” I said, smiling up at him.

“We’ll see if I can get out of school for a few days.” He said, giving my favorite smile.
