I was sprawled on my bed in my pyjamas. To an outsider I would look like a happy, eighteen year old. This was the one time when my life seemed reasonably normal. Aside from the fact that I was a vampire’s slave. I missed Charlie and Renee. I missed Jacob. Most of all, I missed Edward. It still hurt to think about him. Laurent had taken me away from my home. He took me to a house miles away from my home. He left me there occasionally while he went to Denali to see Irina, when he went to hunt. He had enrolled me in the school. I had no idea why. There were cameras on every inch of the house. I had no idea why he was letting me out of the house. I got up and got dressed. Long baggy clothing to cover my bruises and scars. All from the same source. I headed to the school. I wondered if this is what they felt like when they pretended to be younger and repeated school. I pushed his name away before I cringed in pain. I walked to school, deliberately avoiding the car Laurent had bought me. All things considered, he actually looked after me quite well. Nice car, good food, a house. All I had to do was stay and do as he said. But I didn’t want his care. I just wanted to be free. I knew I had no chance of escape. It wasn’t just the cameras. He was a vampire. He could hunt me for eternity. I sometimes wished that one time he’d lose control and kill me. I reached the school and went straight to my class. I had a few friends. An orphan who had been adopted called Danielle, a boy called Mark, a set of twins called Alexandra and Cameron who had moved here from England. Dani was dating Cameron. Mark had expressed an interest in me but I couldn’t date him so I turned him down and he moved on to Alex. I had a fake name that Laurent had given me. Morgan Turner. The name had no meaning to me, like everything else in my life. Dani was already seated in the class.

“Hey Dani. How are you?”

“Fine. Callum and Mary are going out tonight, so I was wondering if you wanted to come over? If it’s okay with your dad”

“I’ve told you before. He’s not my dad. He’s nothing to do with me. He’s just a guy that takes care of me,” I told her.

“Yeah, well whatever. Do you think he’ll let you come over?”

“Probably not. I think he might be out of town tonight anyway. He left yesterday but I don’t know when he’ll be back. I’ll ask” Mark came in with Cameron and Alex.

“Hey Alex. Mark, Cameron” I smiled. It was nice that we had at least one lesson together. I had biology with Alex and Cameron but I still sat on my own. I was empty inside though I tried to act normal. I didn’t always succeed. The lesson passed in its normal irritating slowness. Biology came next. That was when I heard the rumours.

“Hey Morgan?” I turned to see Kara, the school gossip.

“Yeah Kara?”

“Have you seen them yet?”

“The new students. There are five of them. They just moved here with their mom and dad”

“No. I haven’t seen anyone new. Why?”

“I just wondered because you seemed to be in a good mood” I was always in a good mood when Laurent went away. I knew I was living on borrowed time. Eventually he would get bored of me and kill me. Or maybe he’d turn me and I’d finally be able to escape. I knew he was still in contact with Victoria. Maybe when he was done with me he would give me to her so she could enact her revenge. Not that it was much revenge considering that Edward didn’t care about me.

“No. I hadn’t seen anybody”

“Okay” she turned to talk to her friend. I blocked out the rest of the day until lunch. I didn’t eat much. Laurent supplied food but I didn’t get hungry much. I bought a drink and headed off. The others ate together and were used to me not eating with them. I walked down the corridor, not looking where I was going until I bumped into something hard.

“Oh. Sorry” I mumbled.

“That’s okay,” said a painfully familiar voice. Please. No. not again.
