Gradually, things got worse. Victoria would hit me for no reason, or for small things. Any excuse, like not doing well at school or not wiping my feet when I came in. the food in the fridge dwindled down to nothing. I don’t know what she did with it but my only chance to eat now was at school and I didn’t have any money to pay for it. She filled my bag with heavy objects that made my bruises hurt as I walked to school.

Edward wouldn’t talk to me at all, or even look at me. That hurt more then any kicks Victoria could dish out. Alice shot me hurt looks but ignored me too. I sighed as I started the walk home. I went as fast as I could today, not because of the threat that Victoria would hurt me if I was late, (she would do that anyway, late or not). It was because of the knowledge that Edward was today feeling reckless. His eyes were black with thirst when I glanced at him. He might try something. I hoped not. My resistance

I reached the house without incident. There was a note inside.

Gone hunting. Tidy house.

Thank god. I couldn’t handle Victoria right now. Every time she hit me, I made sure not to let her see my tears, or let one cry escape my lips. I would not give her that satisfaction. I tidied the house from top to bottom, knowing as I did that she would find some fault with it. I jumped when the door opened.

“BELLA! DOWN HERE NOW!” I stumbled down the steps.

“Yes miss?” she dropped a very large bag at my feet. Big enough to fit a person in.

“Open it”

“What? Why?”

“Don’t question me. Just open it” there was a smile playing around the corners of her mouth. I didn’t like it. It was full of menace. I opened the bag and screamed. Charlie was inside, his eyes wide and fearful. But his skin was chalky white and ice cold. He was dead. I dropped the bag.

“You monster!” I yelled. She seized my arm.

“Now, Laurent doesn’t know anything about this bit. So when he comes home, don’t say a word. I’m going to bury this in the woods. Get out of my sight” she stalked off. I made a snap decision. I went to the kitchen and got the biggest, sharpest knife I could find. I got a cloth and wrapped it around the knife. Then I searched for Victoria’s car keys. She hadn’t bothered to hide them and I seized them. I ran upstairs and grabbed my box. Then I unlocked her car and sped off. I drove for ages, losing all sense and direction. I veered off the road and shut off the engine. I was in the middle of a wood, but the green leafy trees offered me no familiarity. I could hear the babble of a stream and tears came to my eyes as I thought of the meadow where Edward and I had been together. But the memory turned to one of horror. Edward became Laurent, smiling with evil enjoyment as he tortured me. I unwrapped the knife and placed the cold steel on my skin. It felt so cool and smooth. I touched the point. My finger bled as the razor-sharp blade penetrated my finger. I breathed threw my mouth to stop myself retching at the smell of blood. Then I cut. I started with my legs, cutting zigzag lines up both of them. Then I did my arms. The smell of the blood overwhelmed me. A wave of sickness and darkness washed over me.
