1. Chapter 1: True Feelings Revealed

Rating 0/5   Word Count 1886   Review this Chapter

I was scared. I was deathly afraid. I know he would be mad, just to what extent? He couldn’t possibly be so mad that he would…leave me, could he? That made everything worse. That’s the worst thing he could do to me. I would gladly take anything other than that…I was scared.

There was no warning. But I felt his cold hands on my face, and I opened my eyes to see him sitting over me, with anger, confusion, and most of all, hurt, all apparent in his cold, dark eyes.

“Edward…” I started, but I couldn’t finish. I didn’t know what else to say. Nothing could make this right. So I just dropped my gaze from his, not feeling worthy enough to look at this magnificent creature. I looked down at the floor. “I’m sorry.”

“Bella,” he sighed. “Give me one reason why I shouldn’t just walk out on you now. Because right now, I feel like you’d rather have Jacob.”

“No! Edward, you can’t!” I quickly scrambled for words. “You know what would happen if you did. That hasn’t changed! I would…” I couldn’t go on. That time of my life hurt too much for me to think about.

“Yah, that’s right!” he snapped. “You would go running back to Jacob. You’d obviously rather have him!”

“You’re wrong, Edward.” I murmured, tears brewing beneath the surface. “I don’t want anybody but you. I love only you.” The tears broke the surface. “I’m sorry…I can’t take back what I did, but I’ll do anything to make it up to you. Just please, please don’t leave me?” I pleaded. “I can’t live without you.”

He pondered my words for a moment, probably wondering if I really meant them, which of course I did.

“Anything?” he questioned.

“Anything you want.” I told him.

The anger in his eyes began to dull. He grabbed my wrist, and started to pull me along behind him. His grasp was a little too tight, and it hurt a little bit, but since it wasn’t that bad, I decided to keep quiet. He was already in a bad mood. I’d rather bear this pain, other than the alternative.

“C’mon.” he growled.

I stumbled along behind him for a while, hoping that if I was good, he would slow his pace. He didn’t.

“Where are we going?” I asked after awhile.

“Back to my house.” He said.

The words were simple enough. I’d been to his house many times. It was the way he said them that made me stop dead in my tracks. The tone of his voice- sweet velvet, but still deadly- made them sound almost menacing.

I figured he would have continued to drag me along behind him, but instead he whirled to face me.

“Why are we going to your house?” I asked, timidly.

“You’ll find out later.” He growled.

I suddenly didn’t want to know what later held for me.

“I…don’t w-want to go b-back to your house.” I stammered.

He heard the fear in my voice. The left side of his mouth turned up in a smirk.

“Are you scared, Bella?” He asked, his tone dark and seductive.

“No.” I answered to quickly, and my voice wavered.

He sighed and the smirk vanished from his face. He put his hand under my chin, and pulled my face up until I had to look at him.

“Bella, you know I’d never hurt you.” He said. His eyes were full of nothing but concern now.

“I know…” I mumbled.

“Then, what are you afraid of?” he asked, his eyes were still full of concern, but now there was something else there, deep in his eyes…sadness, maybe…?

I didn’t know what to tell him. I couldn’t tell him the truth. That I really was afraid that he would hurt me.

He must have read it on my face, because I was suddenly cradled in his arms.

“Oh Bella, I’m so sorry,” he whispered in my ear. “I’m sorry that I frightened you. I had no idea…” his voice was on the edge of breaking. “You know I’d never hurt you, don’t you?”

I knew that. His words were true enough. I just couldn’t bring myself to say it. I looked up at him with pleading eyes, longing for him to understand. His expression turned horrified, and he hugged me tighter to his chest.

“I’m sorry Edward,” I said, my voice shaking a bit. “I know you would never hurt me. It’s just that…” My voice broke on the last word.

“Yes Bella?” he urged, his eyes pleading.

I waited for a moment for my voice to come back.

“It’s just that…you were so angry with me for kissing Jacob,” his jaw tightened at the mention of Jacob’s name, “that I thought you might…well…beat me like other guys do…”

I dropped my gaze to the ground, not wanting to see his expression. This would definitely hurt him.

He was quiet for so long that I finally had to look up. He seemed to be stuck in a trance. When, he met my gaze, he blinked and I watched the horror slowly fill his eyes. I heard his sharp intake of breath. He looked down at me with horror struck eyes. And then, I was suddenly in his arms again.

“Oh Bella, love, I’m so sorry I ever let you believe that I would…beat you. I’d never do such a thing. I love you far too much to even think of doing that. I’d kill myself before I would ever think about doing something so vile!” his voice was pained. “I’m so sorry, love. I wish I’d known…I hate myself. I truly hate myself. I really am a monster…only I’m much worse than I ever feared.” His voice broke, and his breathing became staggard.

“Don’t say that, Edward.” I pleaded. “You don’t hate yourself, and neither do I. And you certainly aren’t a monster…I love you.”

“I love you too, Bella.” He said.

“Forever and for always…” I murmured.

When we got back to his house, Alice came dancing down the stairs. When she got down to the bottom, she finally took in Edward’s devastated expression. She froze where she was at, and I heard her gasp. She glared at me through narrowed eyes.

“What did you do to my brother?!” she hissed.

“Nothing! I didn’t do anything to him-“

“LIES!” she screamed.

Emmett came into the room then, to see what was going on.

“What the hell’s going on in here?” he asked annoyed.

Then, he saw Edward. He gave the same reaction Alice did. He let out a low gasp, and then his eyes narrowed at me. He took one step forward into a crouch, tensed to spring.

“What did you do to him?!”

Edward took one step forward, putting himself between me and his brother and sister-who had also stepped into a crouch- and sank into a defensive crouch. His lips pulled back over his teeth in warning.

“Back off!” he hissed, “She didn’t do anything to me. Stop threatening her, and I’ll explain.”

Emmett and Alice relaxed out of their crouches, followed by Edward, who still kept himself between me and his brother and sister. Edward nodded toward the living room.

“Let’s go sit down.” He suggested.

Emmett and Alice stalked into the living room. Edward turned to me.

“I’m sorry about that. Are you ok?” he asked.

“Yah, I’m fine…but why did they get so defensive?” I asked him.

“They just worry about me,” he said. “They’re just the tiniest bit overprotective...” Then he grinned. “It’s kind of a vampire thing!...Or maybe it's just a Cullen thing...?...But who they really should be worried about is you…” he growled playfully and grabbed me up in his arms, pulling my face to his.

He chuckled and pulled away.

“Now, are you sure you’re ok?” He asked, serious again.

“Yah, I’m perfectly ok.” I assured him.

“Ok then,” he said.

He kissed me softly, before grabbing my hand. We walked into the living room. Emmett and Alice were still glaring at me when we walked into the room, and Edward still kept himself in between them and me. He sat down across the room from them, and pulled me onto his lap.

“Now explain!” Emmett growled.

I cringed into Edward’s chest, and he tightened his hold on me, pulling me closer.

“There’s really not much to tell guys.” He said. “It was mainly a misunderstanding.”

Edward told them what happened with Jacob- I hung my head when he told them that.

Edward noticed my martyred expression, and stopped talking. He leaned down to kiss me.

“Don’t worry, love.” He whispered in my ear. “I’m not mad. Stop torturing yourself like this.”

I couldn’t bring myself to look at him. The shame was too much. He put his hand under my chin and tilted my head back until I had to look at him.

“Honestly, Bella.” He said. “I’m really not mad. Please, stop torturing yourself like this. It’s not your fault. You are only human.”

“That’s the worst excuse I’ve ever heard.” I mumbled.

“But you are only human, love. Please, don’t do this to yourself.” He pleaded.

“I’m sorry…” I said quietly, and then before he could respond, I reached my lips up to his and kissed him.

When I finally had to pull away to breath, I laid my head against his chest. He cradled me in his arms.

“I love you…” I murmured.

“As I love you…” he whispered.

“Can you please just finish telling us what happened?” Emmett asked impatiently.

Edward finished telling them what happened-about him being upset, and me being afraid that he would beat me, and how much that had hurt him to think that he’d let me believe he’d ever hurt me.

“That’s all that happened guys.” He said. “You’re freaking out over nothing. That’s why I look like crap.” He grinned at them before turning back to me. “I’m so sorry, Bella…Forgive me?”

“There’s nothing to forgive…” I told him. “And it’s not like you didn’t have every right to be upset-“

“So, she didn’t hurt you?” Emmett asked Edward, cutting me off.

“No, she didn’t.” Edward said.

“And he didn’t hurt you, right Bella?” Alice asked me.

“No, he wouldn’t do that.” I looked up into his eyes, and smiled at him. His answering smile was breath-taking.

“Well, that’s good. Especially, since I really like you, Bella.” Emmett said, and then his expression turned absolutely devious. “And I’d really hate to have to kill you.”

He grinned, flashing his teeth. I shivered, and Edward glared at him. He just laughed. Alice just shook her head, while trying to muffle her laughter with the back of her hand, and not quite succeeding.

“Well, if you two don’t mind,” Edward said, throwing a glance at Emmett and Alice, “We’ll be up in my room.”

He stood up, swinging me into his arms. He carried me up to his room, and put me on the bed, before sitting down next to me. He grabbed me, and pulled me onto his chest at he lay down. He kissed up and down my jaw line and across the base of my neck, before finally settling on my lips.
